  1. The answer to everything is a Joke on 42 *IS* The answer to Life, the Universe and Zeta · · Score: 5, Informative

Douglas Adams was asked many times during his career why he chose the number forty-two. Many theories were proposed, but he rejected them all. On November 2, 1993, he gave an answer on alt.fan.douglas-adams:
The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought '42 will do' I typed it out. End of story.

    Tao Te Ching, Chapter 42:

The Tao begot one. One begot two. Two begot three. And three begot the ten thousand things. The ten thousand things carry yin and embrace yang. They achieve harmony by combining these forces. Men hate to be "orphaned," "widowed," or "worthless," But this is how kings and lords describe themselves. For one gains by losing and loses by gaining. What others teach, I also teach; that is: "A violent man will die a violent death! " This will be the essence of my teaching.

In an internal memo last October, Ray Ozzie, chief technical officer, who joined Microsoft last year, wrote, "Complexity kills. It sucks the life out of developers, it makes products difficult to plan, build and test, it introduces security challenges and it causes end-user and administrator frustration."

Well Ray should know, he does work there.
I think in Microsoft's desire to be the everything of operating systems, they have bitten off more than they can chew. They need to re-think their strategy and aim to a secure, less-complicated and smaller operating system. Then later, they can release a huge Vista at a time of their choosing.

  6. Google Pages Initial Testing on Google Pages Launches · · Score: 1, Interesting

It loads initially okay in IE7, but it is a bit slow right now. I am not sure why, but it crashed the first time I used it. It didn't want to save, and it didn't load some of the tools on the left-hand menu. The next time I tried, it worked okay, but it hung again when I was uploading some images.

It has several default templates to choose from, which is nice. There is a menu on the left side to easily adjust your fonts, colours and layout.

I reloaded it in Firefox 1.5.0.1, and got this error: 'Google Page Creator is having a little trouble right now. This is not because of anything you did; it's just a little hiccup in our system that will hopefully go away soon. We apologize for the inconvenience, and recommend you try reloading this page.'

I then closed Firefox and reopened it, and it loaded perfectly.

I will give it a few days to work out the bugs, but for a free page creator with 100mb space, you can't beat it.

Brainshare, has that become something akin to the Collective?

    The Collective
Microsoft is a vast collective of humanoids that have been assimilated by the Billgatus of Borg. These humanoids, called Windrones, have various ID badges outside their bodies. These ID badges connect all the Windrones to each other in a massive collective called Redmond, which supresses each Windrone's individuality. Windrones have the ability to adapt to enemy software which makes them a powerful enemy. Their main goal is to find profits by assimilating more workers and technology, but they only assimilate what they think is relevant market or technological traits. The Windrones are un-emotional but efficient and can only grow in numbers by assimilation.
The traditional Windrone hail which is delivered before the assimilation is as follows:
"We are Microsoft. You will be assimilated. Your technical and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is futile."
