It's things like this that keep me from watching movies..

If someone takes the time to rewrite a rather large book - there seems to be more thought (at least more effort) than what goes into movies..

If i write something - who says the world should see it - what if i only want 100 people to have it?

and people did buy books - they have for a very long time - before the printing press people made livings copying books to sell - after the press they got cheaper - now ditialy they are essentially next to nothing to copy - so we are down to the actual value of the works.

do i like DRM - no.. do i agree with people who would make copies of ebooks and give them away when they have no right to do that - no... do we need to find a happy medium? yes.

i like this idea - as it presents another way of compromising, and eventually reaching that happy medium.

Correct - why buy it if i can get it for free legally and just as easily?

If there is no incentive to buy a book then what will be the incentive to the people who would write a book?

Sure you will still get true great works - and works from people who write for passion. But there are a lot of books that exist that a lot of people read that do not fall under that area. Without the incentive of making money (either extra or a living) these works would not otherwise exist.

And i'm not talking just about paperback novels but technical works, reference manuals, the stuff a lot of people use on a daily basis.

Yes - and they already have. Under law when it happened they are only liable for 75m they have already paid out a hell of a lot more than than that.

Why? because it would cost them more not too. If BP ran with the law at the time and said too bad soo sorry we are only liable for 75m, the media and the politicians would have gone ramped with it in their own name (elect/pay me i'll fight the evil doers BP for you).. instead BP did the correct thing and said out front before ANYONE mentioned making them pay - that they would pay for it. That they would foot the bill, and so far they have.

Just because they can get out of paying for something doesn't make it wise to do it.. as for NG.. i doubt the VA contract is a large portion of the biz and isn't a core piece - so yea.. they are going to use cheap words.

while i agree with that - it's splitting hairs.. unless you have a device Completely removed of the outside world and completely encapsulated then it can't be waterproof as as you have to pierce the membrane for something.

If you make the charging contacts part of the membrane and make them withstand the environment they are to function in - then there is no reason why you should need inductive charging.

I'm not against inductive charging - it makes a lot of sense for things that normally would have some type of battery or power run to them but are not easy to service (pace maker - inner ear hearing aids) Sensors inside sealed vessels. I just don't see the point for things that fit the profile of most consumer devices - it adds an extra cost and increases the possible points of failure for really no reason other than to say "look what i can do".

I understand some people can be allergic to Nickel but also some are allergic to gold - and silver.

for the large part people aren't allergic to nickel - and it is a very good an relatively cheap noncorrosive metal (when solid - the plating never lasts).

but you know.. manufactures already know this - they also know that ALL computer interconnects should be gold plated and the reasons why.. yet we still see plenty of them that are exposed Tin or other crap metals.. and the only reasons they don't do it right is
    A) it's cheaper to cut corners with products you don't have to support for any decent amount of time
    B) you sell more products over a given time as people replace them because they think they have failed (when in reality the contacts just need to be cleaned)

sorry just my personal beef with electronics manufactures. If your not going to gold plate it and it isn't suitable to chrome plate it - dammit make it out of nickel..

I can see the added value for things like electric toothbrushes - those must be encased in a water proof shell. But the whole point of phones is that you replace them every 1-2 years. Making them stronger and water proof is bad business.

actually there is no reason not to do contact based charging with a water proof object just make the exposed metal contacts out of a non corrosive metal - gold plating is best, chrome plating works for low voltage/current - solid nickel works really well.
