Advent children was awesome and the sound track is great..

I don't knock the original FF movie because of a couple of things.. First it was way ahead of it's time in terms of render and animation quality - as far as i'm concerned it put toy story to shame (especially when you look at the time lines for when rendering started) It's only major flaw was being called FF.. people expected something like Advent Children and not what they got.. if they had given a better name it don't think people would bash it as much.. but then again not nearly as many people would have watched it.

the first AMD64 CPU shipped in April 2003

the first Itanium Shipped June 2001

So the AMD was 23 months late - all they did was tack on to existing x86 where as Intel was trying and did develop a whole new architecture.

almost all of the complaints for the Itanium being slow was due to it having to emulate x86 for software that was not written specifically for the IA64 - Code that was and is written for IA64 runs fast as hell and there is a reason why they are still used today - just is specific applications.

Intel's failure was due to them trying to jump to a whole new computing architecture and expecting programmers to go with them - instead programmers resisted and AMD jumped on that by just extending the existing x86.

Development on what became the IA64 started in 1989 by HP and Intel was brought in in 1994 and the first implementation was in 1998 - hell it is the reason we don't see Alpha's anymore.

    AMD64 started in 1999.

So in computing terms AMD had many generations to watch Intel actually Innovate - and then take the short cut to market. Please note I'm not putting AMD down for AMD64, I'm just pointing out that you can not compare the success of it VS the Itanium because they are not the same by a long shot.

Also if you want to learn something new - read up on why IA-64 is so different form x86 and you will see why it is worth investing in. Not for the current project but rather for the knowledge gained by doing it. You would be surprised how much of the R&D that went in to the Itanium is currently running in your newer computers and servers.

Personally it depends to me if it is a public service or not.

we as a society pay taxes to keep police and fire emergency services running - and we don't pay bills to them we pay Taxes... in a lot of places (county hospitals) we also pay money in to the hospital via Taxes..

While i understand cost of healthcare as a cost of usage - and i agree on getting a bill for the materials used and the manpower - (aka drugs/bandages/doctors).. i don't think they charge should be any different if the EMS picks me up and takes me in or if i came staggering in to the ER door..

My justification for this is that the EMS part is the emergency service that my taxes pay for.

Now i also agree that we should bill at full cost people who abuse (aka use when there is no need for) emergency services.. Around here you get 1 false alarm fire call a year.. after that it's billed through.. and they can be 6-10k each.

Making them hold more (more raw space) does increase the reliability by giving more free sectors to be used in ware leveling operations to ensure sectors don't fail early, or if they do fail they have a spare to relocate to..

    Helium     24        204976.41  210369      463.79

    503.87/463.79 = ~1.09

so using Hydrogen over Helium is a net gain of ~9% lift..  don't get be wrong but 9% is a lot of extra it isn't nearly 2x aka 100%.  I think the added safety of having a Non reactive gas over the most reactive - is worth the loss of extra lift..

Part of the reason Hydrogen doesn't provide the extra lift people think it should is because while in Gas form Helium is just He, Hydrogen is H2 which is still smaller (almost 1/2) in volume than He

While i agree it is great to work with other departments to work up solutions - but there is a point where you will need more people and not have a way to justify it.. then your going to get managers from other departments that get tired of looking at the proposed solutions and will ask for a fixed rate base done XYZ.. and an IS manager will think that is a great way to get more budget allocated so he can hire more people.. and will provide a over stated cost per XYZ and that will be the start of the end of it.

Managers and bean counters love fixed cost per XYZ because it is easy to work with and doesn't require them to understand what they are trying to control.

trust me i'm not an advocate of doing internal billing as a fixed cost per XYZ but i am in support of IT/IS doing internal billing for cost justification - so that when the bean counters come we can point to a rack or support persons and point to a department and redirect them.
