What I'd be intrested to see..instead of how much we all pay is.. how many customers are served Per tower - and how many towers vs area vs coverage.
You maay have the largest plan for sweeden.. but do you roam when you go to the UK? even if not.. all of Western Europe is ~1/3 the size of the US and has 1/3 MORE people
comes out to be:
Western Europe | 514 people/mi^2 United States | 86.5 people/mi^2
Basicly it takes 5 times the area to hold the same numebr of people - asume population was evenly spread (i know it isn't) it should cost 5 times as much to provide for the same number of people..
"Average US plans cost $52.99 per month compared to an average of $10.95 in Finland."
Assume the Finland price for all of western Europe - and we pay 5x the cost for something 5x as expensive to provide..
People don't realize how large the US is.. and that most plans now days there is no roaming from sea to sea.. thats alot of area to provide for..
This concept isn't new - I'm a USAA member.. (USAA member ship is restricted to Armed Forces and their Dependants (used to be Only Officers int he Armed Forces)) From the start several years ago (8-9) when they opened the Banking part of USAA they allowed Check deposit via a Scanner or via Fax.
the idea of using an IPhone app is no big deal as it's a decent res camera.. and they already have the check image processing software in place (to handle the fax and scans)..
I've never used them for banking.. BUT for insurance.. they are by far the best i've ever seen
"I imagine rewrites would stay comparatively slow, though."
thats the extra beauty in this method.. a rewrite.. doesn't have to actualy rewrite the same block.. it can read the block merg and write to a "empty&wiped" block.. then go back and mark the source "empty" and let GC go back later and "&wiped".. meaning that your rewrites would speed up also.. as it wouldn't have to wipe the source block after reading it.
your translation is correct.. for me.. i never said or ment to say that it was easier for everyone.. but i wouldn't be supprised if i wasn't the only person in which it was true.. i doubt we will ever see any hard science on it..
I quit Caffeine.. while smoking.. then realized that i had subconsiously replaced it with more smoking.. so? i quit smoking and picked caffeine back up.. oddly not any more than i had before..
so while people will say mind over body... Quiting smoking is easier than quitting Caffeine.. (and i do not drink soda's.. hum coffee all the way)
"I Love these little facts. "Well you know. Smoking takes ten years off your life." Well it's the ten worst years, isn't it folks? It's the ones at the end! It's the wheelchair kidney dialysis fucking years. You can have those years! We don't want 'em, alright!? And I guarantee if I'm still alive, I'll be smoking then. I'll be in my wheelchair, with my adult diapers on and my twenty-five year old non- smoking born again christian son behind me. I'll be going, "Hey! Make sure you wipe this time. I was itching all week for Christ's sake! And get me some more wippets. I'm almost out, you fucking pussy! Come on!"
and if i remember correct the dead girl was bulling Drew's daughter.. could it not be part her fault.
while i agree and eye for an eye makes the world blind - what happened and the reaction to it is nothing more than the same
- THE only reason this became what it was - was the girl killed her self... the excuse of "bags of hormones" isn't and excuse... is it this person? or the parents ignoring her? or the rest of the school being asses? what caused her to kill her self? why is it relevant to this lady getting a felony conviction for computer hacking?
while i agree what this lady did was not something you would want to happen - there where no laws broken. the Judge's reasoning is very sound on this.
you are right about the office 2007/10 deal. where i work we havnt' moved to vista - infact we can't because the hardware we use (high production printers) are not going to be supported under vista (and likewise win7 because of the same driver model) these printers start at 70k.. right now we are sticking with office 2003 - sure it's 6 years old but it does do it's job.. and we are looking closely at swaping to Open Office - (in a slow migration) rather than getting more licences..
office 07? not on the radar.. office 10? joking right? sorry but i will take stable over flashy any day..
i figured that was why the image in the summary says "insert sim" i have several Blackjack's that are completely usesless because they like to eat sim's (one even put a char mark on the sim (physical burn))
if the Affiliate and Amazon are both out of state then the person ordering should be paying the tax at the end of year.
if the affiliate is in state then the Affiliate should be collecting tax for it's location for people in it's state placing orders just as any biz is required to do.
When you walk into Walmart pick something up and walk to the register and pay for it.
at the point you pay - walmart takes the money then holds it for 30days then pays out the cost portion to the provider of the product (manufactuer).
There isn't a single item in a Walmart that is actualy owned by the store you are in. All they are doing is providing you a way of finding products from a ventor and helping with the money transactions (it's amazing when you look at their tax savings from this).
Not really much diffrence in what your discribing..
The one way of looking at this is that you are going to the Affiliate to make the purchase - they could have
A) kept an inventory (which they bought from Amazon for resell) and sold and shipped to you and collected tax as they should B) outsourced the money proccessing and have the supplier drop ship - inwhich they should still be collecting tax as they should (which they arn't)
Sure Amazon might be the person shipping it or place handeling the money transaction - but you are agreeing to purchase it from a "Affiliate"
this is no diffrent then going to a regional store for goods made and shipped from out side the state.
Is this Amazon's fault? no - it's the Affiliate's that are the ones failing to collect tax - they are using Amazon's to out source their money collection - and in doing so failing to collect tax's for their area.
i wasn't even thinking of the current wifi - but them listing it as a 2meg connection - just reminds me of some of the first setups i ever saw ~12-13 years ago using microwave links between building (and some i bet are still being used)..
while agree that what get deployed now is mostly secure by default but alot of ones from the start where not - and very very very very rarely will an isp go back and update links/setup/hardware if there is never a support ticket on it.
"government-run telecommunications center with a very dodgy internal network"
doesn't make me think fed or mil setup but rather local government or school/dot setups which trust me i've seen exceptional poor setups.. (my favorite tough had to be the proxy that would work for anyone.. including allowing connections from the net to access internal resources)
without knowing the full conditions of the setup no one here can answer if they are secure or not - but what i was getting at is from the looks of the post i highly doubt that security is their first, or even second concern.
"At best they have to be on the same physical network segment as you and able to sniff all traffic"
point in case of not reading the summary - "transferring mission critical files across a 2 mbit microwave connection"
they are brodcasting their data to whom ever wants to listen - sure you can focus the beam but there is always reflection - and if they are complainging about shotty networking and are using and using windows file copy over a wan connection - i highly doubht that their data is secure
actualy i doubt they will just "add it to the price"
it isn't as simple as "add 6% to the price" sales tax verys not by just state but county and town and city and districts.. infact any governing body that can charge a tax could effect the cost of goods. and also it verys based on what the good is..
where i live when you sum up the taxes i pay from 2.5-7.5% sales tax depending on if i'm buying food, recyclables, consumables, toxic materials, raw materials.
Amazon sells a very wide range of goods - to actualy do it right they would have to look up on each item in each location what the correct tax is - then collect it and pay it based on the schedual set out by the governing bodies.. for all of the US..
what happens if they charge too much or too little? or don't pay on the right time frame? well then they are breaking the law..
no it should be the Affiliate's responsibility to collect the correct taxes for the goods sold through them in their area of taxation. Just like the local convince store. Amazon is just the supplier to these people.
what really should be happening is that the Affiliate's should be collecting sales tax in the state that the Affiliate is located - Amaazon should only be responsiable for the sate inwhich it is located (as it does now).
if you order from an affiliate in your sate - it is the same as a brick and mortor store in the state - when you look at the affiliate. when you look at Amazon.. they are a supplier or the affiliate - and there for the fact that the Affiliate is purchacing it from Amazon for resell means no sales tax collection for Amazon but when the Affiliate charges you they are required to collect sales tax and to pay it to the sate.
this is how every retail store works - they buy from someone else and sell to you - the end person pays sales tax. if you order from an out of state company they arn't required to collect the sales tax but you are required to pay the the tax - if you don't pay it to the state then you are guilty of tax evasion.
the states are being really stupid here in going after Amazon - they just see the name and the big money and are trying to cross the legal bounds in the presuit of money. what they need to do is crack down on the Affiliates that do not collect/report/pay sales tax like they should.
What I'd be intrested to see. .instead of how much we all pay is.. how many customers are served Per tower - and how many towers vs area vs coverage.

USAA is a hell of alot larger than just a bank..

to stop the wanting a Cig when i have coffee. i got theses.
http://www.amazon.com/Tea-Tree-Therapy-TOOTHPICKS-CINNAMON/dp/B000GUHAES
they Sell them at the Whole foods around here.. they are damn strong.. and more than enough to satisfy that change of flavor in your mouth..
the Cinnamon are good.. the plain ones are anything but - and taste like cheap menthol..
not saying this is the answer.. but if you really want to quit.. it can help.. if you let it help.
I quit Caffeine.. while smoking.. then realized that i had subconsiously replaced it with more smoking.. so? i quit smoking and picked caffeine back up.. oddly not any more than i had before..

natural selection - making an attempt.
i'm glad i'm not the only person that looked at XML and sat there scratching my head.. wondering why we need a solution to a non existing problem
oh i have no doubt that it can and will happen over time..
but i did want to point out that compared to what you have right now .. it will be amazing.
and while you don't need "perfect" data - it helps to have it somewhat relevant.
while agree the algorithm is easy.. but..
have you ever read electronic medical records? have you ever seen how these people input data?
the amazing programmer is the one that designs the system that gets them to input it right
Thanks - hadn't seen that one yet.

they are not just providing a link - they are also getting paid for sales make via that link.
that is the diffrence

yes i too agree we should kill the social networks - and if it includes an app for it.. then by all means give it to the masses..
