Androids advantage will be that lots of phone makers can use it for free. This means there will be >100 Android phones in 3 years, while Apple still only got one. Android may not be as refined as the iphoneOS in some areas but it kicks its ass in others. It will catch up eventually and the hardware evolves much faster on the Android platform because there are more phone makers.

You don't need to have a Mac for Android development, you don't have to jump through hops to add your app to the market and you don't have to wait for 4+ weeks to get your app approved or rejected, which means that you wasted your time writing an application for that platform.

You just keep ignoring the way things work in the community. You can't just plug distros and people together like Lego bricks. Most of those that run distros simply do it for fun and freedom. They have a certain vision of how they want things to be done and the GPL gives them the freedom to do so. If you take that away from them they'll stop contributing because it is their spare time and just like you and me they prefer to do what they want.

Another common misconception seems to be that Linux has to take over the world. I couldn't care less how fast the community grows because it works already! The commuity itself has nothing to sell so the marketshare is not important at all. The only thing that really matters is how many active and happy developers we have.

ath9k - Atheros unveils free Linux driver for its 802.11n devices Â

We are pleased to announce Atheros has released ath9k to the community. This driver is aimed at inclusion to the Linux kernel and supports all Atheros IEEE 802.11n devices. This represents a major shift in terms of support from Atheros with respect to Linux. The ath9k driver comes shortly after Atheros hired two key Linux wireless developers -- Luis Rodriguez and Jouni Malinen.

We have been informed Atheros does plan to add access point support to ath9k and to work with the community to enhance and complete access point support in the Linux kernel. It is understood there is plenty of work required on the wireless stack to complete full access point support. Jouni Malinen will help drive this process within the community while Luis helps enhance regulatory compliance in the Linux kernel.

We are eager to work with Atheros with ath9k and applaud their efforts for properly supporting Linux.

The ath9k driver includes supports for the following chipsets:

what is the benefit of having thousands of geeks compiling the same code over and over, when you can download 1 binary distribution and be done? If you sum up the manhours of all this compilation, the power consumed by countless hard drives and processors churning away, whats the point?

Speed. Now a binary distro can install things quickly but not run them very quickly. If you have a nice dual-core CPU setup and 1 GB of RAM the binary distros will serve you well, but if you have an aging desktop such a a low-end Pentium 4, or a high-end Pentium III, with RAM maxed out at 512 MB, Gentoo will run faster then even Xubuntu. Now, it might take a week to get everything installed, but once it is installed you have the fastest system you can get on that hardware.

It's not about speed, at least from my point of view. - It is all about configurability. - Almost no users ends up with the same system as the other one.

Since one is in full control and there are hundreds of decisions to make it is very unlikely that any user ends up with the same system as another one.

New release of Mujahideen Secrets software

"Software designed specifically to aid Muslim terrorists hide their identities and location while online has been released in an updated version, according to security analyst Paul Henry of Secure Computing. He says the program is named Mujahideen Secrets 2, and claims it is "the first Islamic program for secure communications through networks with the highest technical level of encoding." Henry, VP of technology evangelism at Secure states that until recently al-Qaida didn't pose a credible threat on the Internet because of its reliance upon outdated technology. But having now developed modern encryption tools, the entire equation is changed. Equally disturbing is the fact the new jihadist program is being distributed via servers based in the U.S. -- in Tampa, Florida." It's available at http://www.ekhlaas.org/ (... but this site doesn't seem to work very well.)

Perhaps they disconected the server bc it hosts terror-warez.
