The iPhone does have an airplane mode, and I have used it to watch movies on several American and American Eagle flights. I'm not sure how other airlines feel about it.
I'm not sure what you meant by a "phone off" mode, but the it does have the ability to disable EDGE while roaming. You can then use wifi for all data. You can also turn the phone completely off by holding down the standby button.
You're right about GPS and high speed Internet though, those features would have made it much better.
Sprite took this even further with their "Sublymonal" ad compaign this summer. They would flash single frame images intermittently throughout the commercial with codes that could redeemed for prizes on their website.
This encouraged DVR viewers watch the whole commercial in slow motion waiting to catch a code frame, instead of only the last second as in the GE commercial.
The Sprite commercials were pretty annoying at regular speed, but were actually improved when watched in slow motion.
I guess you're not to big of a fan of eating huh? Or natural fiber clothing? Or anything else produced by agriculture? The entire agricultural industry is supported by government subsidies, without them very few farmers or ranchers would be profitable.

The Pentium Extreme Edition is a dual core CPU with HT. It is basically a Pentium D 840 with HT enabled.
Pentium Extreme Edition = Dual 3.2 GHz 1 MB L2 Cache, with HT
Pentium D 840 = Dual 3.2 GHz 1 MB L2 Cache, without HT
Paying for an entire cd with 15 songs off of iTunes: $9.99
Almost every album on iTunes costs $9.99, not $0.99 per track.
I just saved you two bucks.
