The stories have become more and more dull with each passing show/film, a sure sign that the series is at its end. It happens, quit hanging on to it, let it die with some dignity like Seinfeld.
Its time for new worlds to be created that'll bring in the next generation of science fiction fans. Star Trek XI will not bring in new people into the genre. Science fiction will disappear like westerns if the same old shit is repackaged over and over.
Guess I was spoiled by Larson. Since Far Side I've yet to find any consistently funny comic stips. Sometimes they'll come up with a refreshing view of things but then completely butcher the art of subtlety by overdoing the punchline.
One exception, though, is FreshMeat which has done a good job of not falling for those trappings... especially the Milkman Dan scenes which always get me genuinely laughing.
Oh poor Black Panthers. The organization that spawned the majority of gang and drug trade movements that would imprison younger generations into standard of livings much lower than their parents.
Most of the progress made by the brave pioneers of the 50s and 60s was severly halted by these thugs. Lowlifes that would rally against the "evil white man" while at the same time shitting on their own communities with destructive vices. And yet the parent post want's us to take offense at the government phone tappings.
Thanks for reciting the overrated (and over-used) textbook thinking that says "fear" is behind most of our human fallacies.
Fear is definetly a key human emotion, with evolutionary roots going back to the dawn of reptiles, but pro-active actions like going out of your way to support something have more than that "fight-or-flight" emotion involved.
Your own examples are flawed. Those actively supporting the actions of a "bad government" do so because they either believe it and/or see to gain from it somehow. It's those that strongly disagree with a government, and yet don't say anything, that are acting more out of fear. Further still, the majority of what's interpreted as "backing bad government" is just people's normal disinterest towards all things political as they focus on their own specific lifes.
I think that actively defending ideas, regardless of their merit, for the sole purpose of being "right" is a form of aggression... intellectual aggression, if you will... especially for males that, in an age where knocking out a female and dragging her to one's cave is frowned upon, must dazzle the opposite sex with alpha-male style intellect.
exactly what makes something "insightful" on/.?
I honestly can't find anything remotely insightful about the parent post.
He basically calls the site author stupid... faults America for allowing the author the freedom to host said stupidity... only to then admit he found the site benificial as a topic refresher... am I supposed to be impressed by this "insight
but it's not going to make much of a difference. some reasons being...
most scammers put up sites knowing that they'll be temporary and/or of little harm to their financial/legal status if taken down or investigated. hack all you want, it costs them nothing to put one up again.
also, pretty much every human action is incentive driven... scammers are driven by the promises of easy money with very little start up costs, while those "hacking for justice" have the harder job of breaking into a site (at least harder than it would take to put one up) with only personal satisfaction as a payoff. the result being, there will always be more scammers than people fighting them... until the same incentive, like being paid to, exists.
If we don't support the artists in our own community, they won't go out on a limb for us anymore
LOL
but really, all hypocritical double-standards aside, who's hosting torrents?
I don't exactly know how Freenet nodes work, but what the hell are you allowing something like that to go on "for a while"? Could you not block (or better yet report) those IPs? Or hell, write something to corrupt data from those sources just to piss them off.
I know you can't monitor all traffic, nor is it your job to monitor any, but apperantly you knew some of that shit was going thru your machine and yet you consciously chose to let that form of child abuse continue...
The interview was not bad for a non-journalist whose best investigative work was running across his subject by chance on IRC. It gives a nice peek into the life of an influential technology contributor, but it's a peek that he does not owes us. So I think it's unfair for anyone to expect more from both parties.
Let it die already FFS.

Is it any less arrogant to label people as arrogant just because their opinion is different from yours?
Plus, how do you know these people believe (like you do) that the universe is infinite? Maybe they don't, and maybe they're wrong.
Or maybe you're wrong and aren't willing to accept that possibility because it would crush your life-long fantasy of making it with an alien lifeform.

Dumbass.

which, at a safe estimate of at least 4 downloads per person (since 1.0), is almost 15 million people!
