Some microphones have a on/off switch. In order to configure it, you need to make sure that this switch is in "on" position. However, most microphones are user friendly and less bloated.
Out of the box, Linux supports a wider range of hardware than Windows does.
Anyways, the whole point of this is that claiming that Windows is better because hardware manufacturers write drivers just for them is a pretty stupid statement.
Short story that always makes me smile: my non-geeky sister (Ubuntu user - I take care of her computer) came back from the first day of her first grown-up job (for a big software company, btw). What were her first words? "Windows sucks". I know quite a few non-geeks who think Linux is ready for them (just not my mom - freecell's clone apparently is worse).
About that "suing every other Tuesday thing"... I was just joking. You have to understand that it looks either funny or scary (actually it's latter in my case) that it's so common for people/organizations to sue one another, often over nothing big enough to ask for anything more than apology.
Out of all the people I know only 2 had anything to do with courts. One was a dispute over who's the rightful owner of some land (it wasn't clear, cause some grandparents said "all of you have 1/6 of our land" to their kids and one of those parts has been sold out of the family). The other thing was clearly procedural - there was a car accident and there had to be a case (nobody sued).
With all that being said - it's not like the rest of the world commits crimes on a daily basis just because others are less willing to sue them.
I'm not anywhere near knowing the law well (let alone U.S. law), but isn't there anything bad that can happen to RIAA for what they're doing? I'm speaking about something more than just losing a case. There were dozens of stories describing they're practices... I know that sueing someone every other Tuesday is your national tradition, but there have got to be some ways of scareing those bastards away.
This is such a great idea, particularly for male college students. I wish something like this existed 10 years ago when my friends and I traveled through Europe. To maximize the length of our stay, we slept in $10 grimy hostels and ate basically nothing (or other people's leftovers).
Heh... couple of years ago my girlfriend and I sailed from Stettin (Poland) to Amsterdam (two-way trip was too expensive). We were planning on staying in A. for few nights and hitchhiking all the way back to Poland. Before the whole trip, I asked on Dutch forums of one online game I play if anyone could host us for those few nights... nobody from Amsterdam answered, but one nice guy invited us to Rotterdam.
Sleeping in Amsterdam was a bit hard-core. We wandered till late at night (until everyone went to sleep), sneaked into a marina (that we used when we arrived) and slept on the ground. One sleeping bag on the ground, and one to cover us. We had to wake up at 6 a.m., cause we didn't want to be discovered by "the boss of marina" (sorry, I don't know English term for it). Luckily, after some time parks were being opened, so we could sleep there. One thing that I remember well - weather was relatively nice (people were wearing t-shirts and shorts), but we were cold while wearing sweaters - now I can understand why all those homeless people have so many layers of clothing on them...
Then we went to Rotterdam and slept there as described in TFA. Our hosts were incredibly hospitable (went on tour with us, paid for everything even if we really didn't want them to, etc.) and even drove us like 30km away from R., till we find a big enough gas station to easily find someone who would go east and take us. We found a ride immediately... and that guy (a programmer, btw:D ) made like 200km more than he needed to just to get us to the German border. Dutch people are great!
Well, Ubuntu at least makes update releases. For example, 6.06.1
They only did this because:
6.06 is LTS (long time support) - some users (especially businesses) are expected to choose 6.06 on new machines even after 6.10 is released, because it's going to be supported for a longer period of time. So we can probably expect 6.06.2+, but no 6.10.1.
That's not exactly true.
Apps are _sometimes_ backported, but only when they appear at current_stable+1 repositories. That doesn't happen very often.
Edgy (6.10, to be released in a few days) has FF 2.0, but only because they started with beta. Breezy (released a year ago, iirc few weeks before FF 1.5) didn't have FF 1.5 - it had 1.5.0.7. It wasn't even backported from Dapper repos (there were too many dependencies... for example gnome help was (maybe still is) rendered via FF). So unless you wanted to try some alternative way of installing FF 1.5, you had to wait till June 2006 (over 10 months).
On the other sie, I remember myself feeling really bad about this "I don't get the newest and greatest stuff" deal when I migrated to Linux 18 months ago. But now, 99% of the time I couldn't care less. Sure, sometimes I really want some new version (recent case: x-moto, a cool game, got a new version that introduced neat new features... luckily it's been backported to Dapper), but the fact that I have almost all of my software being upgraded almost automatically is just so much more important. I'd say the time spent on maintaining my system decreased at least 10x since I dumped Windows.
Even if this whole mess was G's fault (I don't say it's not), it's migrate one (or x) mailing list from sourceforge to something else than to persuade n (or x*n) mailing list's (or lists':) ) users to migrate from gmail to something else.
they mention "links" among pre-loaded apps on their wiki. I'm not sure it's the same thing that I think it is, but I know such text browser (kinda cool, supports tables and frames).
It's not about the whole world reading about what's new in Belgium: it's more about people from Belgium reading news about their own country or getting international news served by their own papers/news sites.
100% of my income comes from (google) ads. ANY source of traffic is presious and those newspapers will feel the lack of that extra money. To me, all those stories about newspapers demanding money form G always sounded like extortion. Something like "if you won't give me half of your lunch, I will blow that bomb and hurt both of us".
Here's another idiotic comment: Opera is better, it's already version 9 (and no, I don't use FF either, but spending 20 seconds on writing "I don't use it, I don't give a damn" wouldn't even cross my mind). I thought first posts are moderated somehow (in a "lame, moved down" way).
Taking all your crap wherever I go, how tired would I be. Forgetting or having no time...
I use gmail for mail, moin moin (not exactly web 2.0 and not hosted by someone else, but who cares) for all our documentation, writely for documents I share with people outside of my project.
I don't want to take care of spam, synchronize ~/.evolution whenever I switch computers, configure mail server (and any other service that's not necessary... hell, I even use afraid.org so that I don't have to mess with bind. Web based solutions are great if all you care is ease of use, convenience and saving time.
Haven't tried any spreadsheets yet, but whenever (not often) I have to edit something that we've done in Excell (long time ago), OOo v.1.x (some time ago, b4 Ubuntu Breezy was out, I think) and OOo v.2.x, it's a real pain in the ass (converting to ods, taking care of permission, so that others can overwrite files, etc.). Having some hosted, based on ODF spreadsheet solution would be sweet.
MS claims that F/OSS sucks. Where's the news? Why does everything those fuckheads say have to make it to news sites? It's just the same as mainstream media and politicians - those morons don't have anything to say that's worth listening to, yet they're taking up to 90% of daily news.
The focus on mathematics in education in Poland (along with Russia and China) is far higher then in the US.
I can back it with a real life experience. I'm from Poland and I spent one year in a regular US high school. In Poland, my class (group) was not focused on science subjects and I was either average or below average in math (I don't think I ever got A at the end of the year).
When I went to states, I took one-notch-from-the-top math course (I didn't take the hardest since I didn't consider myself to be good at it) and I was terrified at its level... it was my junior year (the one before the last... not sure if "junior" is correct) and the stuff we learnt was covered in 5th or 6th grade in Poland.
Example from Polish school (I have to admit, it was one of the best schools in Poland, though):
Freshmen year, one-eyed math professor calls me and says "square root from 5476" or "43 * 86" and counts to 3 (I don't know, it could be anywhere from 5 to 10 seconds). If I didn't manage to think of a correct answer in that time, I'd get a F. I used to get plenty of bad grades, but still, we loved that guy. I was exhausted after every 45 minutes of math lesson... .
Now how the situation looked like in these "advanced" classes in US high school:
Upon arrival to the classroom we were given those huge calculators. Then I would go to sleep (I can't say I didn't like being allowed to:) ). After each month's end teacher collected last month's homework and made a test that covered that material. It was all so easy that it was enough for me to handle that month's homework in 2 or 3 hours the night before and to get 100% on the test the next day. Other kids (they weren't stupid by any means) really struggled to get a decent grade.
That's just to give you an example... I'm not claiming that US schools are worse or anything (in fact, they're superior in many aspects).
It crashes on Ubuntu right after any movie (I tried 3 different ones) finishes to play... and DP re-downloads crashed movies after I fire it up again. I guess you don't have to make a decent product to make it to/.

Bill, is that you?
Oh, and while we're talking: why the hell were you using Linux?
