So why use any sort of carbon output device? Why not just blow atmospheric air over the algae ponds for them to grow? Coal plants produce far too much CO2 for them to exist in any shape or form.
Call me when cellulosic ethanol can be put into production with a substantial yield (i.e tens or hundreds of thousands of gallons a day). You're still faced with a 20% efficiency at the vehicle engine (vs 80-95% efficiency of an electric vehicle).
Cleaning the exhaust from coal fired plants is a non-starter. You're just taking the CO2 from the coal plant and holding it in the algae-based fuel until it's burned in a vehicle, and the CO2 finally makes it into the atmosphere.
Hopefully, by the time XP support gets dropped, Firefox will be onto version 4.0, all my apps will run in it, and I can fully boot into Linux distro-of-the-month if I need to run something like a media player or a game (Steam?). Gmail? Online apps? Web-based IM? Yeah, the desktop OS is getting less relevant every day.
Wow. Well we live in a capitalist society, not a centrally planned one. The US government cannot train more doctors when they are needed. Free men and women must decide they want to become doctors.
Last time I checked, you don't need central planning to get people to do certain things. You can provide incentives through the form of cash and tax credits to push them in the direction you want.
Who, what, where, when? If you're trying to make an argument you will need to provide more than conjecture.
Why don't you read this URL. There's a nice three paragraph section on why Social Security was created. Let me boil it down for you. US Citizens demanded a safety net after Black Tuesday and the ensuing Great Depression, hence "Social Security". If you're not a fan of it, please feel free to pack up and move to a country without a social contract/compact, mkay?
For personal stuff like that, I'd write it off and tell her to make backups in the future. MozyHome is $4.95/month for unlimited backups. A small price to pay.
Years ago I sent a hard drive into OnTrack that had been soaked in coffee by the owner of a company (spilled coffee in a Thinkpad laptop, the Thinkpad kept running like a champ, the drive died shortly thereafter). $1500 and 2 days later, we had DVDs with the content of the drive.
THIS! Tracphone at Walmart = $20. Airtime isn't all that expensive either. Parent who purchase this = poor parents who can't instill responsibility in their children.
Wow. 30 bucks. I'm sure that's breakin' the bank. Since I use Hulu and Netflix instead of cable TV, and cable TV would be $60/month (and Netflix is only $16/month), I made my money back on PlayOn the first month I used it.
My personal favorite end-of-civilization would be the global spread of a hardy airborne virus that causes plants to be unable to photosynthesize. Fin.
Scary thought. Although it'd be an interesting point in history if the same virus caused the human body to be able to photosynthesize, thereby removing the need for food for humans.
So Cogent is acting like a bandit by pushing down the cost of bandwidth? It stands to reason that if you sell bandwidth for $4/Mb, you're going to have other networks who sell it for much higher making your life hell. If you don't want to peer with Cogent, don't. But don't be pissed when you're customers move to them because they're cheaper.

Well, I etch my data into massive stone tables. FYI, I live even deeper in the country.
So you're saying I shouldn't whine about the write speeds of my RAID5 array? =)

But apparently, they have yet to run out of cash.
Where's Tyler Durden when you need him?
Law and Order lied to me??!! *GASP*

Worked on "Fringe".
Increasing demand only raises prices when supply is limited. You can always train more doctors, build more hospitals, etc. This ain't oil.

I think the term you were looking for is "Ponzi Scheme".

But, on the other hand, it's not that expensive either.

Agreed. I'd love if I could flash by Blackberry Curve with the Android OS.

This. Android = huge step forward. Cheap breakable phone from HTC? Not so much. Hopefully more physically robust Android phones are on the way.
Can I sign something somewhere that says "I waive my right to sue and here is a wad of cash, I want the advantages of your tech now"?
