Right. I am not a quantum physicist, but, I'm not an ac either. And I THINK what I'm about to say makes sense.
Consider that a black hole is just a one sided wormhole, no exit. A wormhole has two sides, an exit.
The black hole collects matter. It just goes in, it doesn't go out, so the blackhole gains mass, and therefore a larger gravitational pull.
The wormhole is just a 'tunnel.' Matter passes right through it. Little or no actual mass (I'd guess 'no' but this isn't my field), therefore, little or no actual gravity. So, the answer to the root comment would be "No, you're wrong. They DO have practical applications." Heh:)
I'd appreciate someone who knows more about this (I'm just a high school student) confirming/correcting my statements here, preferably someone more reputable than an AC...
Best Buy carries the Sony MZ-R55PCIF which comes with an adapter that I believe converts USB audio to S/PDIF optical. That kit comes with a Sony MZ-R55, the adapter, and some pc software. Is this what you're thinking about? It's featured in a US commercial (although they don't mention what it really is. Some guy is in the shower singing along to some... feminine music and his roommate walks in... you can see a VAIO laptop and an MZ-R55 recording the music). Some people sell kits containing a soundcard with s/pdif optical out on it, but I'd rather have a USB-> to s/pdif adapter.
At $249 it seems like a bargain (I've shopped around for a USB->S/PDIF adapter and they're $150+).
jay (I'm hoping they decide to sell an MZ-R90PCIF kit... and I stumble across a lot of cash:> )
They had to keep some of it open source (NeXT was BSD based after all)
I was under the impression that the BSD license did not require distributed changes to have source available. Could someone verify? I mean, it cheapens Apple's efforts if they HAVE to open it...
Please. The article did not say, "LOOKIE! HE SAID SOMETHING BAD!!!" The article is about a professor filing a suit because he was defamed in an open forum. Think before following the trend.
If Linux users are willing to settle for closed formats, then they might as well just switch to Windows now.
Care to explain the logic behind that statement? Got you there, didn't I Sloppy ol' Poppy!
What happens when your Linux is obselete? If you have an open solution you can port it over, but if you settled for closed binaries, good luck getting the program ported again (especially if it's a dead format). The purpose of Open Source software is not so you can have a free (beer) OS, it is to allow the user to do whatever they want with the software (including porting to their OS of choice).
The IBM logo was done by pushing the atoms around. This is more `automatic' and suited for mass production. Sure, it isn't the smallest ever, but this is another step towards functional nanotech.
Recently some absurd issues have come up. Things like UCITA proposing to not allow software reselling (as I understood what I read. I would not be allowed to sell my software to someone else or even give it to someone else) and the whole DVD issue as well as stupid patents (which _can_ be written off to protecting IP (speaking of...)) are so... wrong (you know what I mean).
So, maybe someone can answer a question (since IANAHistorian(or anyone else qualified to answer my question (heh, nested ()'s))). I see trends like this happen repeatedly (I believe someone tried to ban reselling of books a while back). Why? I can almost see it as a societal thing (as a culture progresses it's initial values dissolve and are replaced by more "protective" laws etc.).
This same thing was covered here last February. While I usually ignore reposts, it does get annoying. AFAICT, this was posted because it was on a "big" news site, and the poster didn't know it had been done before./. doesn't owe us anything, but it never hurts to check.
Well, you're definitely a WinCE (or Casio Exx) zealot, but you need to remember, not everyone fits your same situation. My Palm III is worth much more to me than my E100. It has a longer battery life, it will sync with ALL of my computers, and it's significantly smaller. Sure, it's fast, and the screen is nice, but it attempts to be too much. The pen based interface is limiting, to me, and if I need anything taken down, I use the palm. Sure, playing mp3's is nice, but it's not that great. I haven't done it yet, but using my E100 (functionally the same as the 105) to browse a webpage or IRC on it seems like it would be rather pointless. A Libretto or some other sub-mini-nano-notebook makes much more sense in that situation. Playing solitaire in color got me a lot of 'ooh cool's but otherwise I was largely dissatisfied with my WinCE devices (I've had others, one an HP/C and they were all much too large, and the battery life was much too short, in my experience)
As I understand, the Corel license prohibits minors from downloading their distro, right? So, if say, a minor was able to email or call and get a CD sent to them (for cost) wouldn't Corel be perfectly within their bounds?

>>I dare say there are more people with religious conviction alive right now that at any other point in history in absolute numbers. Not bad for a dead institution (not that I am one of them)
As cultures/civilizations get larger, the "religious quotient" (I made that term up, but you can get my jist) gets lower. How many people do you see performing sacrifices or participating in an intense, perhaps life-threatening tribal ritual? Just because a lot of people read the Bible and go to Church doesn't mean they're full of religious conviction. The "religious quotient" stays the same, I guess, because in the beginning, there are few, with a lot of conviction, and in the end, many with little. How many Christians do you know who break the third commandment (correct me if I'm wrong about the number) in the ten commandments "Thou shalt not take thy lord God's name in vain."
I'm an atheist, but my parents wanted me to be a Mormon
What about those small companies with an innovative new product who hope to make some money?
My father is currently involved with a small company with an innovative new product that is trying to make money. If there weren't patents on it, they'd be screwed. The product is so simple that most of the people who see it say "Why didn't I think of that," and if there wasn't a patent protecting them, I am 100% sure some big company with money would have ripped them off a long time ago. My father, and two other men, previously two middle class and one lower class Americans. Common men, absolutely. And they're (hopefully!) going to be rich soon. Has the patent office served them?
I think you're just following the recent trend of bashing the patent office. Things like algorithms (sometimes) or genes should not be patented. But patents are not obselete. Yet. I think the whole GIF thing is absurd though. They did not enforce their patent. I would like to see them take someone to court. But I would also like to see the movement to an open standard.
Ever hit someone out of anger? Ever talked about someone behind their back? Ever cheated on an exam or homework in a curved class? Ever stolen? What do you think when you come across people of obviously lower intelligence? Ever have racist thoughts?
What is repentance?
Yet, I have met very few people who are not Christians who will admit that they are just as deserving of hell as the aforementioned mass murderer.
And I have met very few Christians who will either. I don't believe in God, but I don't believe in hate or anything else. I am, what people would call a Good Person. I attempt recognize and eliminate my problems, and I'm rather Charitable. Yet, I don't believe in God (fwiw, I am being raised in an LDS household) and I hope I never will. I don't hate God, but I don't believe in him. If there is a God, all I can hope is that he is not a heartless and cruel person, and that he will have mercy on me for not believing. If He exists, He sent me here to worship and believe in him with no proof other than a big book, and televangelists (which IS quite Arrogant). I find it hard to believe that he would send His children that he loves so much to Hell, simply for not embracing ignorance (as I view it). Modern Christianity is messed up. Corruption has taken a large toll on it, and it is now very, very difficult to tell what all the preachers are talking about. All the "different interpretations" stuff only serves to weaken the argument that God exists. And for them to call me a Bad Person because I don't believe in the hateful (He's obviously not a particularly nice god, as evidenced in the Bible) God they do, is annoying. Jesus Christ I can grok, almost. The Holy Ghost/Spirit sure. But only if God exists. And of course I don't believe he does.
One more thing, will someone please explain to me how Heaven and Hell is supposed to work? The LDS explanation of a three-tiered Heaven helps, but I am specifically interested in Hell. What could be so bad that you'll suffer for eternity? Wouldn't you get past it after a while? What if you become a good person while in Hell? Does God forgive you of your sins? What in Hell could make you feel bad for eternity? Things like pain, separation from loved ones, etc. can be gotten over relatively quickly, and things like "not being with God" certainly don't make sense. A stubborn Atheist in Hell will have nothing to suffer over, will they?
