    There's a huge market for something like this being able to launch 20 or 30 of these in a conflict area would be a great advantage. Just imagine being able to back track an insurgent's movements for 2 or 3 days because you have a whole city covered with planes. Weapons could even be carried and the only time the planes wold have to land is if they were out of ammo or needed matience these are the next evoloution in UAVs.

    What you forgot to account for is that Russia can detect incoming missiles and launch a counter strike before any of the missiles detonate, this counter strike would overwhelm a missile defense system and MAD would still happen, if this wasn't true MAD wouldn't happen because who ever shoots first wins. The Defense system would work well if lets say Cuba was given a few nukes (it would take less then 10min to hit DC) so disabling the nukes may be the only option. With Crazy People in charge of countries with Nukes I'm glad money was invested in finding ways to protect against dictators who think of nukes as bargaining chips.

    So what happens is a country breaks the rule does that mean they are going to be sanctioned, or get a stern talking to, or will it mean that the country will get economic benefits it they promise to not do it again.

    Unless the artillery shell or grenade shrapnel had just exploded there will be a lower density of the residue when compaired to a land mine even if there is no difference false positives are much more acceptable then false negatives.

    A friend of mine was in africa a while back and had noticed something peculure when he visited many years ago, the women always walked behind the men, now many years lator, the men walk behind of the women. When he asked one of the viligers if there was a feminist movement and if women were more more prominent, the viliger said No Land Mines!

    This solution would have to be 500% redundent just to cope with illumination problems, the last thing you want is large outages, that does even take into account transmission losses when certian areas experience illumination problems or the loss when the energy is stored for the 8-10 hour illumination problem.

    Teachers make about 50k for 9 months work that's 65k if they worked year round plus they generally have excellent health benefits, I'm tired of hearing that complaint, if they want more money get ride of the union and allow the excellent teachers to be payed accordingly and remove the bad ones. Secondly getting a teaching degree is much easier then an engineering degree I still remember how 80% of the education students were on the deans list and 1 CS student was when I graduated. People generally get paid what their worth I'd say 65k is more then adequate for a teacher.

    There's one problem with that, morons lack logic and reasoning which make them unpredictable, an idiot may choose to do something based on illogical reasoning, just think guys with mulletts. Economics falls into the chaos theory chategory and if ALL variables are known then a good model can be constructed but for every unknown the error grows exponenatly.

    1 m^3 of helium has about 1kg of buoyancy, to lift 1km cable along with the elevator would require a very large balloon, the winds at 1KM are much stronger then on the surface so the giant balloon would be blown all over the place with a laser pointed at it I'm sure you can figure out the rest.

    Carbon nanotubes are conductive so the same lines that could be used to hold the elevator up can be used to transfer electricity, the problem is that the elevator would need the lines exposed to use them for power which would make it highly vulnerable to lighting.

    Here are a few things most libertarians favor, legalized drugs, ending of the licensing of barbers, doctors, lawyers, ... , no public schools, a Federal Government who's only job is have a military to protect it's citizens, maintain roads, and settle disputes between states. It is not so much greed as it is minimizing government and having personal responsibility for one's own welfare. Libertarians do not care about giving away software for free they just have a problem with the ideologies of many of the people in the open source community, who tend to favor a cradle to grave from of government.

    Actually McCain has a point, the FCC has no authority to regulate the internet. The internet is and has been doing just fine without government intervention adding government regulation into the mix will stifle innovation, the little companies the net-neutrality is designed for will not invest in infrastructure they don't have the capital and the evil large companies will have to cut infrastructure investments to compete with the small companies who use their infrastructure for free. The Good Intentions of net-neutrality will have grave consequences.

    The thing your forgetting it that the Telco's signed a deal with the government to have monopolies and have their rates regulated by the government. Their rates are set by the states so essentially they are running a CPFF contract with the state to handle these services, you didn't hear about the telocos struggling in this economy did you. This is how they get out of paying all the property owners for use of their property to run telephone lines, and how they can hack apart trees on your property sometimes with out you consent and leave a pile of wood in you yard for you to take care of, yes those fuckers topped a pine tree in my yard and it wasn't even a threat to the lines so yes I'm bitter. And if the telocos don't like it that fine I'm sure it will cost more to remove the infrastructure so I'd be glad to buy it off of them at a steep discount.
