FYI I work for Telstra.
Telstra carries secure networks for foreign governments, defense departments and large corporations. There is a large difference between an enterprise product and one for a consumer. Given the size and scope of the company, and the inevitable nature of dealing with customers and employees, situations like this simply happen. Judge the company on the response not on the issue itself, especially considering that our routers are sourced from an external company.
I guess this is a case of we sold you the rope with which you hang us. At some point every carrier in Australia uses our plant or equipment ranging from fully provisioned data networks to rack space and so on. I would object to the label of dodgy when clearly we have a transatlantic network that is sufficient for you to post on slashdot with.
Rather like if a webserver is publicly accessible, then anyone can connect to it. If there's stuff you don't want people to see, then force people to authenticate.
I don't know why some people see wireless networks any differently from that.
Wait a tick. If it is the owners fault for not securing their AP, then would it be the municipal councils fault if a park bench went missing because it wasn't cemented to the ground?
Be responsible for your actions, your basically saying that it's not the criminals fault for particpating in an unethical activity.
I decided to parody the obvious poor choice of quoting Hayden Christensen with a very long "no." The lameness filter on slashdot prevented it. It seems that slashcode recognises really bad acting.
Thats funny, on my thinkpad r50 the two network cards (centrino laptop) and the radeon video card were not detected and no drivers were installed. I install fedora core 3 and everything except the wireless has been installed. X was installed with the correct settings.
I think your computers must be old enough to be supported under windows. The point of the article was to point out that windows doesn't support new tech.
You are right in suggesting they go low tech.
Why don't they phreak. Get a pair of aligator clips, learn how to clip accross phone lines, then dial an isp that isn't in the country. They would bypass any ip based solutions to filter the traffic.
It's easy, simple, and hey free. It is very hard to track. They could add a capacitor to their clips and build out a fake distance for their line. They could see people coming a mile away. Never do it in the same place.

That would be called a mass orgy.

Please don't quote Darth v2.
In nerd style, paying homage to penny arcade, i am going to get Pac Man on my arm.
If a tatoo is meant to represent an aspect of my life i cant think of a better metaphor.

Neither worked perfectly, but linux was better.
