11 THE COURT: I don't know what the point of all this 12 is. Obviously the case isn't over, and if there is more 13 evidence that sheds light on the subject, I will certainly 14 consider it, but it seems to me that there is a reasonably 15 strong case to be made for the proposition that the barn is 16 unlocked and this horse is out. 17 Now, it seems to me also that what the MPAA wants is 18 a legal determination that unlocking this barn was illegal, 19 and so the next guy who considers unlocking another barn is 20 going to have something serious to think about. I suspect you 21 are also asking me to issue an injunction against the guy who 22 unlocked this barn not to unlock it again even though there is 23 no horse in it. So, you know, I don't know that this witness 24 has any light to shed on that subject.
2 Q. Can you give me the name of any file swapping utility that 3 you are currently monitoring? 4 A. Sure. IMESL, Gooey, Hotline, ScourNet, FileShare, 5 FileSwap, Freenet.
I am very curious as to how they are monitoring it.....
I still remember when a batch of saturday morning cartoons switched to rendered 3d. reboot, Beastwars, warplanets, MechWarrior... there was another one too that went weird 3d that you needed glasses for but it still looked different with out them. I was not really impressed with any of them. I found it hard to watch and would quickly switch over to standard 2d animation with more attention to artwork like the super mario world cartoon (with yoshi!)
since then as I have become an anime fan, i look more for more detailed artwork than new technology in the animation process.
I also thought titan AE was really good. mainly as it only used the rendered stuff where it was needed.
The one potential flaw in this argument is that if gravity is pandimensional, why wouldn't electromagnetic forces be as well. which would result in two things if true:
1) gravity is still weaker 2) EM forces can be even stronger than we could possibly imagine.
also did the paragraph about creating black holes give anyone else the willies? that just seems like a Bad Idea.
The downside of this is that it this new hard-drive is a maxtor, and not a more reliable drive, like an IBM. only a matter of time i guess tho... mind you I have not had that many problems with the 6GB maxtor I got, but the 30GB died within a week. just gotta find a way to flush out all the mp3's, warez, and pr0n before i return it.:)
I have been insanely happy with the pair of 45GB deskstars i got to replace it *grin*
Anime on dvd will gradually for anime fans to adopt DVD as their medium of choice. but will anyone get rid of their vcrs? nope. 2 main reasons why:
1) existing collections.
2) Fansubs.
as an explanation of fansubs, it is when some anime is out in japan but not in the us, and a us distributor has not bought the rights. clubs and individuals all over the country put subtitiles on the copies of the originals using something called a genlock. then fans who want to see the anime, send a black tape to the fansubbers and get anime in exchange. this zero profit system is used to justify the "piracy." the unwritten law is that once a distributor buys the rights, all fansubbing of that title must stop immediately. also the fans should get rid of their fansubs and buy the real mcCoy. one distributor had a trade in policy which was very cool.
some people like the idea of fansubs, others dont.
until dvd-rams get cheap enough, vhs is still a fansubbers best friend.
I liked this article. partially as I have believed this for years.
media is not about reality, nor has it ever really been. it is simply about the perception of reality. tons of amazing things happen all over the globe, and most of them never reach your typical newscast.
this isolationism is potentially dangerous, as one of the times it happened was in the 1920's and early 1930's, when the US could have nipped the nazi's in the bud.... and some would argue that the lack of real attention on non-american crisis in the media caused needless death and suffering in the former yugoslavia, and rwanda (sp?). Not to mention letting russia's invasion of chechnia (sp?) go without the harsh condemnation I believe it deserves.
and before we all run to the internet as our primary infomation source, remember what Scully once said: "The Truth is out there, mulder, but so are Lies...."
the best way to figure out what is really going on is to get your news from a bunch of different sources, and then draw your own conclusions....
everyone has an agenda, as long as you remember this you should be ok.
Hyperlinking is not going to become illegal. Yes, the RIAA is being Stupid and Evil, however, this does not exactly justify huge ass pirate sites spreading around links to mp3s like crazed weasels. These kind of sites are being targeted.
Slashdot needs to calm down on these headlines a bit.... it is getting out of hand.
Yes MP3's are wonderful things, and yes they are violating copyrights, however they are really not as important of an issue as the RIAA is making them out to be. everyone needs to just chill out, listen to some relaxing ambient music and get on with life.
If BSD had gone for the insanely large popular push that linux did, then BSD would have been linux. and not just linux, but a better linux, as i will admit, BSD in general seems to be a better platform than Linux, however, the following is just not as big... just as macs are arguably better than PC's in terms of architecture, but PC's have saturation.
There is a major difference between doing something just because you can, and doing something because it is the right thing to do. Yes, this is the way that corps like AOL make money, however, it does not benefit the consumer in any way. AOL can do whatever it wants, but in the long run it will do better with a happier consumer base.
I have a bad feeling that major corporation groupthink might really stomp the GPL in court... and this is not even taking into consideration my low opinion of the US's judicial system.
The scary thing is the (at least) 2 very divergent paths that are now in place. Either this could bring about a utopia, where retrovirii bring everyone to a perfect state, or a distopia where everyone is brought down to the state of a mindless drone while a few perfect beings rule over everyone.
more likely to happen is somewhere in between. as long as companies dont get too profit crazed, then the future might actually have a chance... we have seen this problem with drug prices now....
if you have not seen the movie GATTACA you might want to... this is what _could_ happen.
I know MP3 affiliated companies need profits to survive. but i'd really see them stand and fight against the record companies (and RIAA), then settle.... It reinforces the idea the RIAA has that no one can stop it, and everyone will eventually see things its way...
What worries me about KDE is that it has the potential to become a windows. Do we really want ONE unified X manager? yes it makes it easier to develop, but we dont want a single solid LINUX. ick! that is one of the reasons i use linux, there are many different flavors and aspects to it.
a better solution would be to have interfaces where you just load the library for the features you want.... which we pretty much have, but could have in a better way. for example, right now you can run KDE apps in enlightenment, but how about a totally minimalist X program that is not so bloated? i am thinking of moving to sawmill unsure tho...
why cant geeks be pop stars? musicians made it big, how about if scientists, thinkers, dreamers, and coders get a shot at the mad cash, groupies, and stretch limos? instead of cafe hollywood how about cafe silicon?
is selling out the answer tho? the question is the same that haunts the interenet.... be underground and cool? or be way out in the open and make the money, but lose some of what you are trying to hold onto?
many of us felt enough like outcasts without having to deal with this stoooooopid autism label as well.
i think the message that is going to end up coming out is "respect us, yet leave us alone" yes, i think i like that.

i read court documents so you dont have to ^_^
from Ms. Reider's Testimony for the MPAA:

but then again what do I know, I'm crazy...
this could definately change caldera's goals, and modus operandi....
personally i'd like to see some of SCO's standards get incorporated into linux. god knows linux needs a bit more order and discipline.

well, if you are a doctor, better get all the image archives you need mirrored locally pronto.
and if you just collect porn, better start downloading more of it faster soon.
i liked the internet much more before companies got involved.
Stop and think about this.
.com's onto the net.
assume napster to be an advanced, specialized search engine:
napster is basically "linking" to files.
if linking to illegal content is proven to be illegal (stuff like 2600 and deCSS vs MPAA),
and napster is shutdown
then you have 2 precidents where search engines could be considered illegal.
so people can have search engines shut down.
so things stop being linked.
so the world wide web is no longer a web as large parts of it cant see each other.
whoa. time to go deeper underground?
should never have let the
