  1. Can you people read??? on Microsoft Sets Tolls for .Net Developers · · Score: 2, Informative

The article even says that this is for ".net my services" normal SDK models will still apply for everyday use. write all the stock quote and weather apps you want for free. jesus. learn to read an article before spouting off on just how evil and criminally insane microsoft is. anyone who has a copy of beta2 of studio .net also has a copy of the sdk, so charging a thousand for it really does not make much sense...

  2. geez... what a surprise. on Who Has Faster Pipes? Linux, Win2000, WinXP Compared · · Score: 1

a unix like OS being better at pipes than windows? no way... that just can't be. I mean, seriously, why was this article even published. I bet OSX does better too. hmmmm. WinXP is pretty darn new, and is not aimed exclusively at pipe loving coders. unix is king of the beats when it comes to pipes. they were one of the frist things I learned when coding C for unix.
slashdot would do better if they got over their anti-microsoft fixation and instead unified the open source masses instead of making them seem to be a bunch of zealots.

There are so many other variables to consider in this experiment it is not even funny! how the students do in the class will also depend on the professor, their lifestyle, their study environment... and a zillion more, if anything a better place to start would be at a base level, where taking grade school students and seeing if they do better at real life tasks that incorporate certain aspects of games after playing the games. (ie: brain teasers after playing LOLO, mazes after gauntlet, etc...)
    good luck!

plus i have watched drug use destroy the rave scene in the pittsburgh-cleveland area, and it pisses me off.

even if you leave the app in PTRAIN for a long time, have it play against itself (use RECALL) and the only time it will lose is when the ball is in the uppermost left corner. i tried this on about 12 attempts with varying lengths of training time, ball speed, size, etc... i find it hard to believe that this situation never comes up in training going by the assumption that the training is simply how to respond to the ball being at each point on the y axis of the court....

I got to live in a geek house this summer and it ruled (mad props to The Geek Empire). i simply got to know everyone else in the house over the course of my college career, and got invited.

however keep in mind that you will have a house of geeks. got personal quirks you might not like? well multiply those by the number in the house. however, if everyone communicates there personal needs and wants, things can work out fine.

oh yeah, and standardization for classes is a good idea. although in later classes we just use g++/gcc on solaris for standardization so i guess this is a step in the right direction at least.

  18. possible reasons.... on Selfish Society · · Score: 2

the reason the net culture right now is so sucky is the dumbing down of it. once aol opened the floodgates and geocities let everyone have a web page, no technical experience was needed....

remember when your favorite local restaurant was discovered by a local newspaper and suddenly EVERYONE went there, and it started to suck? same thing has happened with the net. it was not meant to be this commercialized. the net culture at the stage it was at with HTML 1.0 and Gopher was very different, mainly as more people were the same... and more people were likely to know other people.

the sad thing is those who bitch about the dumbing down and commercialization of the net are branded elitist and snobbish.

  19. social darwinism is everywhere! on Selfish Society · · Score: 1

social darwinism is prevalent in modern society in general. not in a specific area of the techno-elite. just look at office powers.

also i dont really see the "techno-elite" as all that elite. yeah, the geeks got the control over the machines, and make mad mad money for it, but then the more money you have, the more you need to maintain your lifestyle... surprise! comsumer culture takes hold and your kids are screaming for pokemmon. you are stuck on call 24 hours a day to fix the machines that only you can fix, if you get a poor performance review it will be hard to get that good paying a job again, so you work as hard as you can. but what do you lose?

the truly elite are the corporate managers who dont understand the technology but understand how to squeeze more work out of people to make themselves richer.

society right now is at a dangerous crossroads, with one branch leading to unabated apathy, limited intellect, and addiction to whatever the large corporate conglomorates feel like throwing us, and the other path to a utopian environment. but getting to utopia means letting go of the need for consumer goods. this is hard to do with so many whiz bang gadgets, but simplicity is key.

individuality is important but human beings are social creatures, and when you work as a community the results are like using a beowulf for numerical approximation. if you isolate yourself, you are at the mercy of your own limits.
