Actually the "nx" user isn't required, neatx supports operating without. However, NoMachine's nxclient doesn't support this, as it assumes that it should always log in as the "nx" user. So, if you're using !M's nxclient, you need to do a small bit of modification client-side. Here's an example of what to do client-side (though the beginning of the post is specific to FreeNX): http://www.felipe-alfaro.org/blog/2009/01/18/freenx-usermode-authentication-and-mac-os-x/

Python handles this just fine - the part that Neatx implements is io-bound, not cpu-bound (at least on any remotely modern platform). The bash scripts are tiny (see http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1301267&cid=28688001) and there purely for emergency error-handling.

Good question -) However, have a look at the different language breakdowns between the codebases.

    FreeNX:
    5.4k lines of bash
    233 lines of C
    102 lines of expect

    Neatx:
    5.7k lines of python
    400 lines of C
    54 lines of bash

The bash in neatx is there to provide wrapping of the python code, so that any unhandled errors etc are logged. It's a belt-and-britches approach.

To be fair, the NX compression libraries by NoMachine resolves those issues. Neatx just makes it possible to use these libraries without relying on non-open-source'd code.

My 550 TiBook is a classic piece of machinery

You wha? I have a 550 TiBook here. It's one of the worst built laptops i've ever seen. The screen hinges are so flimsy they just break themselves. It gets really hot, almost too hot to touch. The lid-release is so finicky you need two hands to open the damn thing. The main case flexes so much that if lift the laptop with your right hand a cd in the drive will grind to a halt.

The more recent powerbooks are nowhere near as bad. A 550 TiBook is a 'classic piece of machinery'? Only if you're looking for a classic example of form over function.

    1. Apple may never release a standalone copy of Mac OS X (Intel) that you can actually buy without purchasing a machine. With Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), this may occur, but it is not yet guaranteed. In this scenario, I don't think there is any excusable way in any jurisdiction to run Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware, since you *must* pirate Mac OS X to do so.

Um. So in say 2 years time, i can't buy a 2nd-hand piece of crap mac, and use the version of OS X (Intel) on my pc instead? I disagree that doing so is piracy.
