    You probably stand out a bit on /. because most people here care so little about astrology, they simply could not care any less. Zero is the lowest level of care and that is how much I care. I couldn't care less about it.

    I do care a good deal about the ridiculous number of people who believe in this c**p. It is saddening to be asked by intelligent people about it. I know it is bunk because I was at school after the age of 10. How come they missed that part of school?

    That sounds like a description of a secure network. Hopefully, that is what all hospitals do. Sadly, they will not generally be using the most secure operating systems to use it.

    If the scanners are on the network you can...

    • see it from PC beside scanner
    • see it from consultants office
    • see it from any PC in hospital - if the user has permission
    • on call consultant can VPN in from home to look at it
    • show patient in ward
    • compare it against earlier pictures
    • compare it against reference scans
    • teleconference and discuss it
    • check whether your scanners actually work properly

    Hospitals here have some pretty serious rules & policies on Information Governance. If it is properly looked after, we should use this equipment in ways that get maximum benefit for the patients.

    It is quite possible that neither or Medvenev actually know the answer to that question.

    You know the user you ask "Which version of Windows do you use?" and you get answers including...
    "2003", "Firefox", "Apple" and so on.
    It then turns out that they are running Windows ME.

    I am told that science and engineering are more highly regarded there than in the west, but technology is a tool to tose at the top of the tree anywhere - just like money, polonium and icepicks. They don't care.

    Just because something is pathalogical does not mean that society intends to fix it. Look at the number of rich and powerful pathalogical liars...
    I can call someone a pathalogical sports fan - they would call me a pathalogical couch potato - if they knew the word. Beither of us would feel we could change the other.

    Agreed. Someone who reads intelligent and interesting thing such as SciFi is likely to be open minded enough to not be critical of too many bizzarre ideas/people.

    Do a little research and see how much of the world uses GSM and how much follows your 'lead'.

    I am still standing.

    They have done nothing that offends me.
    They have taken a picture of the outside of my house from the public road.
    They have found my WiFi encrypted - this removes implicit permission to access.
    They have computers holding my email - if it is private, it is encreypted.
    I used their search engine for free.

    How have they knocked me over?

    There are many applications that want to run more services that they need to.
    For example, when I start up an application for an IT magazine, it always asks me if I want to turn on my GPS. There is no need for it to use GPS to show me content so the only reason would be to make a not of my location for someone else.

    That is an easy one to fix, I have GPS off unless I anctually want to use it. The same goes for WiFi - smartphone batteries do not last as long as stupidphone ones.

    But what about other leaks?
    Limit yourself to open source apps - ideally write them yourself. Never use anything free and closed source. You never know what is there!

    I just consider my phone an insecure device and do not trust it. I do not do anything on it that involves confidentiality. I also do not respond well to unsolicited adverts...

    I regularly have people from the US tell me how I am unfortunate because I do not have the 'benefit' of the US constitution. I am still not convinced.

    Apparently, universal healthcare is so evil and unconstitutional that your slightly right-of-centre president was only able to offer a feeble, watered down, insurance based version. Even that is unconstitutional?

    Sounds like a good idea to me but I have this thought that, if it ends up doing things that US Spooks/Corporations don't like, it may be accused of bad things or something. Rather like Wikileaks has been.
    I am aware that Wikileaks is not perfect - it has human beings in it, but what it is doing is excellent. The big problem is that it has offended rich and powerful criminals. Any alternatives to US control could do the same.

    The only thing that will save us from the US Global hedgemony is the same thing that saved us from the USSR. It collapsed under the weight of internal problems. The west didn't do it. It wasn't the fact that "communism doesn't work" - they never tried it. Neither was it violence - the violent people were in charge anyway.
    What broke it up was thousands of different groups pulling their own way, There was ethnic division, political strife, economic carnage, and total dissolusionment with the whole idea of their empire.

    Sounds like nowadays doesn't it?

    Your Democrats have some allies elsewhere. Here in the UK, our Conservatives seem to like them.
    BTW - Brisish Conservatives are accused of being the most extreme major party in Europe. They are regularly seen as the "Nasty Party".

    "Liberal" means middle of the road. Anyone who regards the middle as way to their left must be a long way right of the centre.

    I think he feels that it is broke.
    I think a big problem is that ICANN gives too many questionable organisations too much say into what happens. I include in that list, MPAA RIAA and their alternatives in the remaining 96% of the planet, various spooks and one particular national government.
    I suspect people here can think of many more names...

    One day we have a senior airline exec saying that this is ridiculous and the next daythings are 'found' that reminds us how much we need all this security.

    So the answer is to use Android. That presumes you are a responsibe adult.

    The biggest selling point for me getting my HTC Hero was that it was not an iPhone.
    The next one was that it could do anything I would have wanted on an iPhone without being under the thumb of Apple.

    This is why the rest of the world would like some changes made!
    Nobody would mind if you had the power to cut yourselves off from the rest of the planet. Some of your compatriots did this a long time ago.
    The USA has no more legitimate right to close down the internet than China, Iran or Andorra. It just hapens to have the ability.

    I pick up my phone and put a sentence into FB. This informs a lot of people at once.
    Or I say to it "Facebook status.......etc........... So does this
    I enter the sentence as above and select dozens of email addresses, being careful not to include business contacts. This will take longer than the actual content.

    Hint: Use the right tool for the job and don't allow feelings of superiority to limit the choices
