Do you see the similarity with the binary system?

You see only powers of two which could be easily encoded with 1s and 0s.

While the iPod may not give tactile feedback, it can give significant amounts of auditory feedback. By default, 'keyclick' is on so while you scroll you'll hear a slight ticking sound to let you know it's working.

Presumably, most people who'd buy an iPod can hear.

  3. Re:More likely to be $199.... on Mini-iPod Mystery Drive Unveiled? · · Score: 1

Consider further that Apple doesn't want you to do the math. If you start looking at tradeoffs and dollars per minute of music, you might realize that you can get a better deal on a flash memory player or one of those Dell things. Apple makes their money on the Cool Factor, and cold hard logic is dangerous to their bottom line.

While the Dell mp3 player may be better given the tradeoffs, a flash player is the *worst* deal possible. A 40 GB iPod costs $500. That works out to 80 MB / $1. Flash players are, from what I could see at BestBuy.com, at most 1.6 MB / $1.

  4. Re:my 2 cents on Rhapsody on Digital Music Stores Reviewed · · Score: 1

Here's what really makes Rhapsody valuable to me: The Rhapsody desktop app integrates the Muze database, the same database you'll find at music store kiosks for doing searches. With this you can do searches by artist, album, and song title. Also, for each artist you see similar artists, influencers, and followers, all hyperlinked together. I can spend hours just following links among artists, finding music new to me that I'm more likely to like.

For $0 / year you can go to allmusic.com and receive the same information.

    Actually, they are more restrictive:

    1. "You may then transfer music files and backup license files to up to two (2) additional personal computers."

Apple permits you to transfer the music files to *any number* of computers and CDs you choose *but* only 3 are allowed to play at any time. You may authorize and deauthorize computers at any time.

    2. "[You may] burn Products solely for personal, non-commercial use up to ten (10) times."

Apple does not restrict the number of times you burn the music. You may burn it an infinite number of times provided you do not burn a specific playlist more than ten times. You're forced to recreate the playlist to reburn it ten more times after that.

  6. Apple Will Love This on Paying for Apple iTunes with PayPal · · Score: 1

A lot of people seem to think Apple would look down on this practice? Why would they?

If the gift certificate fails to sell or the purchaser can't use it, Apple makes a pure profit off the transaction - they don't need to pay the record company for the sales and already made $20/$50/$100 from the gift certificate sale.

Myst as a miniseries? Why would they pick that now that the top selling game of all time is The Sims?

Just think about a miniseries for that! You could have daily episodes where it'd be similar to life except that the characters cheat and double-cross each other continually.

They could take my medical track character and call the whole series "General Hospital" or something.

  12. Extending a wireless network? on Cheap Wireless 802.11b Bridging · · Score: 1

I tried looking to see if there's some way to use a second wireless access point as basically a repeater (so I could extend my wireless network throughout the house). I was hoping for something that'd just look at the packets coming in and send them out to and from the previous access point.

Even called Cisco and they said this couldn't be done. Anyone know differently?

  13. Power vs. User Friendliness on Linux Promises, Apple Delivers · · Score: 1

    > Personally, i've always seen true user
    > friendliness as a sacrifice to power.

This isn't necessarily the case, something which, Apple has shown to some degree. A good example of this is Lotus 1-2-3 vs. Microsoft Excel.

Back when Lotus 1-2-3 for DOS was out and Excel for Windows came out, a lot of users felt that Excel wasn't as powerful and, because of the GUI, was slower to use then Excel. In fact, 1) would anyone claim that, say, the last version of Lotus 1-2-3 for DOS is more powerful than a Excel 00? It certainly is easier for the uninitiated to use and has more features. And 2) in studies of watching people use the products, they continually found that people were faster under the GUI even though they perceived they were faster under the old 1-2-3 command mode structure, partly because they were doing more work, they assumed they were achieving more effect.

I wouldn't claim that a GUI is necessarily more powerful than a command line interface - it may just be that it's easier to create a 1/2 decent GUI than an 1/2 decent CLI. Some things are more intuitive to do in a GUI, others are more intuitive to do in a CLI.

But I definitely disagree with the idea that just because something is easy to use means it's less powerful. Most things can be made easier to use w/o losing power by simply providing the user with the ability to get help or by giving more notification of what they're doing.

According to the article at http://macweek.zdnet.com/2000/01/09/ skinz.html, the reason Apple sent off any letters to begin with is because the theme in question used the Apple logo (and, looking at screen shots posted at MacWeek, it *does*). That would be clear trademark infringement and Apple would have EVERY right to have done what they did. According to the article, Apple HASN'T said anything since the skins were reposted sans logo. So *please*, again, make sure you find out the facts as to WHY before assuming it's without any or shaky reason.
