The premise of the study being people enter the passwords even if they do not see the image is dumb. That's like saying I buy top of the line RSA encryption but provide other my key or i buy a safe and do not lock it. If people are stupid enough to enter passwords on public terminals without even using the most primitive security systems they deserved to be robbed. The BOA system is primitive but depends on people using some common sense. Having said that, I am not big fan on captcha like security systems, install a trojan monitor the images for a month, ship it back to mother ship and lo behold you have a phishing site personalized just for you.

This is the biggest myth about SCTP "borrowed features of UDP partial reliability", but the fact that it has not been implemented fully yet is never highlighted upon.

Also SCTP is no improvement over TCP it uses the same congestion control algorithm as TCP, even if people say there is support for multiple streams. All streams are part of 1 logical connection and all the streams share 1 congestion control algorithm!!!!

No study has shown SCTP to be a better alternative than TCP except that it can provide maybe multiple persistent streams oneday within 1 logical connection with seperate congestion windows.

The other apple foray into the living room, "The 500$ Mac Mini", the graphics support it offers, direct from apple's specs "Intel GMA950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory"

The real dearth in my opinion is mainly in Phd side, not that many ppl are willing to spend 5 yrs doing one. But again its a question of aptitude.

A seminal article was written by Fred Brooks, of the role of computer scientists as "Tool Smiths". As he says computer science is not a science but an engineering, we apply the field to help solve problems in other fields. http://www.cs.unc.edu/~brooks/Toolsmith-CACM.pdf

This is where the field is maturing, and we are in the most exciting period where more and more people are realizing this. Just look at computational biology or physics.

I used to work for the IT Support division at a college and as many know it is not flush with money. So, we tried pushing off upgrading memory on comps from a 64 to 128 when Win2000 came out. Big mistake, say we did wait then we cannot put any SPs out, so when the viruses started coming out our network went down for a whole 2 wks, till we went and checked out every comp on campus.

These articles that claim a 10 seconds boot time using hibernation, tell me if I keep my comp on all the time, who is going to foot the electricity bills? These articles when read by ignorant bosses down at the Financial HQ, excite to cut our budget even further. Why do you need memory upgrades and PC upgrades, looks by this article its all hogwash. At startup we have 10megs left over, there is no way with memory leaking a sieve in unpatched windows machines, they can run for even 3-4 hrs without the user going mad.

A plea out to all the people out there, put an advisory on these articles only for the tech savvy and not for cost cutters. And in the end lets get over the fact that tech is mving faster than sound, today we can get 400$ dell with XP to do most tasks that a normal user needs. 18. New Wine in an Old Bottle on Asa Dotzler on Why Linux Isn't Ready for the Desktop · · Score: 1, Insightful

This question seems to be popping up every few weeks, and we have a huge discussion if Linux is better, suited etc

I did a comprehensive study about a year back to see if Linux can push Microsoft out of the office. In the study I compare SuSe, RedHat, Mandarake and a bunch of others. They fell wowefully short in the desktop, a major reason being the UI, it is just too unstable and compared to GUI of Windows and OS X looks shabby. Second, the lack of support, I will stick my neck out and say this, the level of support that is available to Linux is just not there. If I pay RedHat everytime based on their tier system to service my PCs, I might as well go with windows.

However, in the server space Linux is quite competitive, its easy to administer and maintain. I have a built a ton of servers using Linux, but for stability I am kind of partial to Free BSD.

For Linux to break into the Desktop market, it needs a fresh UI. Something, like what Apple did with BSD and packaged it with this Fresh UI. If the UI is stable, fast and looks great, the rest of pieces will fall in place. But before that lets not even have this discussion and just say Linux is a great server OS.
