Actually, a friend of mine has a G3, and he had to re-flash the ROM chip in his Voodoo 3 to make it work with a mac.
I have the same. The Voodoo3 came configured for PC use. Something about big-endian whatever. Anyway, it took a whole 10 minutes (ok, maybe 12 including downloading the ROM data) to convert it to Mac.
It takes a fair bit of fighting to upgrade any hardware in his G3. (His ATI All-in-Wonder can't use it's own tuner box, and his CDRW drive is quite succeptable to radio interference.)
How is any of this Apple's fault? ATI probably never got the all-in-wonder drivers right, and the CDRW drive probably isn't grounded (through the AC wiring) correctly.
My G3 has never required any bit of fighting to upgrade. I've changed out hard drives (standard IDE), added RAM (PC100), upgraded the Apple ROM, added the Voodoo3, and even overclocked it with out a bit of trouble.
And yet, with only a few exceptions, anime has far more uniform and uncreative character design than any western animations this side of Hannah Barbara.
Why is that?
Because when you can't come up with decent scripts and plots, you have to create goofy character designs to compensate.
Anyway, want some 'interesting' character designs? Watch Urotsukidoji. *_*
No, it's just another medium. 'Anime' is the Japanese word for animation. That the best animated stories seem to come from the Japanese is a side issue.
There are many different genre in anime, just as there are different types of shows on American TV. Some are for kids, some aren't. Some are comedic, some are dramatic, some are titilating, some are documentary. Some are cute, some are nasty, some are scary.
There are Japanese terms for the different types, I just don't know them by heart.
My preference: Good scripts and plausible plots. I also enjoy stories told without the additional baggage of some "star actor's" personal life.
I have to agree, plastering it up on Slashdot is a bit odd, seeing as how it really is something that one would consider a hobbyist thing, like building model rockets, ham radio, or flying remote control airplanes...
...or working on open-source-bound code, I suppose.
A firewall is only going to keep people from entering your machines. It won't keep people (such as your next-door neighbor, who may or may not work for the Feds) from sniffing what goes by on the connection between the cable system's nearest node, and your firewall.
Sure, your machines are secure, but your communications with the rest of the world are not.
Try printing, ftping and reloading the NewYorkTimes all at once on a mac while you are holding the mouse button down in free space on the background. Everything stops.
Well, get your finger (cookbook, ass, stack of MaximumPC, whatever) off the mouse button. Sheesh.
It can only single task.
Hmm, then how could mine be copying files in the background as I write this?
Now I think I'll just give the guys a BeBox on a cheap AMD system.
Give 'em a couple of sledgehammers while you're at it, so they'll actually be able to have fun with the BeBox.
...but I am wondering what I can do to properly ground my machine without the use of the metal case that is so classicly accepted.
It's not just classically accepted, but actually required. The metal case shields the rest of the world from the large amount of RF being emitted by various items on the motherboard. Without it, you are interfering with assorted wireless communications, and the FCC doesn't like it when you do that. Interfere with the wrong communication service, and the FCC will solve the problem to their liking, not yours.
I've had a little bit of an electric bill problem when my last computer with an AT power supply wasn't grounded properly."
This makes no sense to me, unless some of the CPU-generated RF noise that would normally be shunted to ground was reflecting back to one of those digital power meters. No other way I can figure the AT power supply to cause that.
Lying King is a blatant rip-off of Kimba, The White Lion, a long-running animated Japanese television show from the 1960s. Read the comparisons here
Disney hasn't done anything original in decades. Their contribution to the success of anime in the US is much the same as Window's contribution to the success of Linux.
Actually, it's only a sexually repressed society because we (the USofA) conquered them, and added our puritanical 'wisdom' to their society's laws.
You can thank the USofA for the pedophilia problem. We outlawed pubic hair in photographs and drawings. Consequently, the most portrayed part of society is that which is least likely to have pubic hair. We sure showed them, didn't we.
All of these young, breast-less, big eyed girls in these shows, with their short skirts and knee-high socks, are really just a subtle way of losening our children's morals and making them more susceptible to attack from a pedophile.
Your children are more susceptible to attack because you try to hide reality from them. You make them go to strangers to learn about sex, and to learn why their bodies are the way they are. If we stopped lieing to them ("The stork brought you" "I found you in a cabbage patch") we might have a chance to save them, and they might not grow up to become pedophiles.
It's about the story. That's where Disney will stomp a mudhole in those japs anyday.
Yeah. Let me know when Disney comes up with an original story and just some whitewashed retelling of an old-world fairy tail.
Why are people all of a sudden into anime?
Like you said: "It's about the story." Most anime has well-told original stories. Not just the same old prince-saves-the-beautiful-maiden-from-the-evil-st epmother crap.
Heyyyy, wait a minute. You're just a troll?!? Nevermind then.
Of course, it would be really stupid to use it as a server, since convection cooling only works if the thing is sitting on a table and totally unobstructed.
The article was talking about laptops. Why would you rack-mount laptops and use them as servers?
Of course, there's not a bat's chance in hell I'll buy it, because (AFAIK) it won't play Diablo 2
Yes, it will. And does.
and I tried to use Cakewalk for Mac once, but that one-button thing kept causing me to delete my songs.
Then you sound like the perfect customer for the new no-button mouse. Even less chance of clicking on the wrong thing. ^_^
I think we can all rest safe in the knowledge that some random manufacturer will close this thing and stick in IBM-compatible components within the next two years.
Lets see...the iMac is now 2 years old. PC manufacturers tried to clone it. They all failed. Some for legal reasons, and some because the clone they came up with wasn't worth buying. Anyhow, it would be interesting to see a passively cooled IBM compatible that was smaller than a file cabinet. I doubt it could be done, though.
Hell, if they're dead, let's cut 'em up and toss 'em in the stew. Just because they are dead is no excuse not to contribute to the elimination of world hunger.
Oh, and I thought starving people just wanted food.
So do lazy people. Food isn't some "new technology" that the non-starving are keeping from the rest of the world.
How many people in your "soup kitchen" are spending the rest of their time increasing their knowledge and/or work skills? I'd bet less then 10% are. Why? Because they know someone will take pity on them and give them free food. They probably spend the rest of their days making $20/hour (or more) panhandling.
It is people that solve problems, not money, not technology, not clicking on banners.
All I can think of when I read this guy is:
Soylent Green is people!!!

Maybe a good percentage of slashdotters think this is a good story. More importantly, perhaps those who run the place think so.
I assume you've been submitting stories you consider to be 'good'.
BTW, nice use of your +1 bonus. I think I'll follow your lead. Remind me again why you not only bother to read these stories, but also post to them?

No plot. No story. You should just hate that.
What about Bambi?
I don't know.
How about Toy Story?
Toy Story is NOT Disney.
How about The Lion King?

Absolutely. That's one of the reasons why I own the Perfect Collection on LD.
I wouldn't want this to be someone's introduction to anime, though. That's the reason so many of the trolls think anime is just for perverts.
