  1. Re:Way to go Nokia on Nokia Announces Patent Support to the Linux Kernel · · Score: 1

In short, Nokia says "we give you a new toy today, but we can always take it away from you later". Which means neither Linus or anybody else should touch it...

What else or better could Nokia do?

Nothing right now, I think, because they don't have any control about where the Linux development is going and so they need to protect themselves.

What is most interesting about this move is why did they do it?

To me it seems this might be an assault on software patent holders in general, and maybe even Microsoft specificaly.

Sure Nokia must hold thousands of patents. But they are still not a big player in the patent business and they know that they might find themselves in a bad position if software patent laws are introduced in the EU and strengthened elsewhere.

I just wished more companies would realize that if their name isn't Microsoft, IBM or Siemens that they have much more to lose from software patents than to win.

And of course OSS has almost nothing to gain from software patents.

    the PS3 isn't really a gaming console.

Hope you don't tell that in your commercials, because you won't sell lots of PS3's if you make people believe it isn't a gaming console.

Instead, it will be an all around device that will allow the owner to experience all sorts of different types of new entertainment

Like what? Do you want to make me believe you reinvented the wheel? What kind of new entertainment could there be?

    Smell-O-Vision?

Pr0n 2.0 - the next level of filth?

    Tinfoil origami?

Or is this Sony's way to tell us that the PS3 will be just another DRM-crippled multimedia platform?

In that case I think Sony is making a terrible mistake (didn't they learn anything from their mp3-player fiasco?).

    Amen.

I wonder why should companies contribute or fund the Mozilla Foundation, if any derivative work or redistribution of the Foundation's browsers they create is going to raise the FUD mocking and anger of Mozilla's 'lead engineer

Because Mozilla is still not proprietary and you don't get locked in like with Microsoft products. And you can always fork if you have the money or manpower. Ever tried to fork IE?

Then of course it is another question if a lead developer should have a loud mouth that might scare people away. (Not saying that this is the case, but guess some people might feel that way.)

When I was talking about people who don't know about RSS I was in fact mostly talking about people who already run Firefox.

But does Firefox really convert RSS-clueless people into RSS-users? I'm not sure about that at all.

What happens if you click the orange square in the down-right of your Firefox window? It gives you a "Subscribe to 'Slashdot RSS...'" option, which looks to the clueless like just another newsletter-thingy / advertisement they don't want to see...

I think you're wrong, RSS is great, I love it and I use it and you probably use it, so who cares if most people don't know what it is? Does it make it less valuable? Inovation starts with one or a few people.

You are right about how great it is and that innovation starts with one or a few people, but does this mean that RSS will be a success in the long run? Right now I'm not sure if it will become as successful as email or as successful as betamax and laserdisc.
I guess in the end it will all depend on the question if sites can make money out of it. - And then we might need Firefox extensions to filter RSS-ads... :(

Even more appealing is the thought that people might start tagging their weekend plans and schedules in their RSS feeds.

    And why would that be?

What would that be good for?

And besides that, even if most sites offer RSS feeds today, how many people are really reading them?

Maybe it sounds stupid to mention that on slashdot, but I know a lot of people, who don't even have the slightest clue what RSS is in the first place.
