Yeah, safe mode should really fall back to such drivers. I can not understand why they didn't design it to be failsafe. Maybe the recovery console might help in such cases? I don't know what drivers it uses.

does Vista dump if you change your motherboard like XP does because of the IDE drivers only being changeable during an install? That has never been the case, you can simply disable your current drivers, swap mobo and it will work just fine. It will install the correct drivers on first boot. I've done it a few times in a row and it never fails. Well I suppose it would fail if you put in an unsupported chipset, in which case just install the drivers before the swap.

Apparently *they* see why they want to spend their time elsewhere. I like Debian, too, but the problem/beauty with OSS is exactly that it gets fragmented easily: this provides for both agility/flexibility and unnecessary waste at the same time.
It's kinda like freedom, come to think of it :)
Anyway, I don't think that those guys who work on their pet distros in their basements would make a noticeable difference, if they were to join big projects like Debian or Gentoo.

Why is it so easy to convince people that "we are passing this law for your own good"? If it were really for your own good you'd have done it already. Even if it's a tragedy of the commons scenery, the gov't has no rights ANYWAY to tell you how to behave.

Your thoughts about Apple are mostly correct but yougot the PC thing really wrong - in fact, it is the very kind of chip inside a computer that determines if it is a "PC" or not. "PC" used to be a trademark, owned by IBM, and was later extended to include all kinds of x86-based computers (see "IBM or compatible PC" on old software). Today, "PC" means (at least, that's how most people regard it) a computer running its OS on a x86 (or its clone). PPC, Spark-based etc computers CANNOT be PCs. Even though I do have a personal G3, it's still not a PC.

Excuse me but if you put such a vague word as "unreasonable" in the constitution, then you get what you deserve: vague, variable "interpretations" of the "spirit" of the law and its writer's "intention". THAT's why you need absolutes in laws rather than the idiocy you can read in any contemporary legislative document. Your constitution did a better job but still fails, precisely because of these somewhat wide cracks. Remember that the more flexible something is, the more it will be distorted - for good or for worse! Just think about the second amendment, which you most certainly hate with all your forces.
