I would generally agree, as these force-Linux-to-relatives plans are always a bit cringeworthy. But in this case I have heard reports of the Windows 8.x GUI causing problems to ordinary folks too, so I would look into other platforms as well.
Just go with KDE. Of the big desktops, it runs the fastest and has best quality assurance. Also the UI resembles XP, which was one of your requirements.
So Debian with KDE or the Fedora KDE spin.
If she needs Flash, Google Chrome is pretty much the only option. If not, then Firefox is fine too.
If you have extra money, I would just go with a new Chromebook or a tablet.
I'm not denying evolution, but while we are at the topic, let me ask a related question.
Let's assume that we have an ant, say a RockMonster ant. Then we have another specie, BigAss RockMonster ant, which we have found being evolved from the RockMonster ant. So far so good. The question: what makes evolution split the species into these two clearly distinctive species, instead of, say a hundred different species which are something between RockMonster ant and BigAss RockMonster ant?
It's the oPeN SoURce and freeware aspect that maybe confuses people to see a problem here.
What if Firefox was a commercial, closed source program, and Dell was selling this service? People would just think the installation as a basic consulting service and not notice anything special about it.
Indeed. If there was a three-letter American organization working on this, there would be no arm-wrestling but instead we would have a nice full data dump in the same day.
Some people describe their first LSD trip being a truly enlightening experience which allowed them to see life and the world in a completely new perspective. Can you explain this more specifically?
This was evident from Carmacks talk at QuakeCon 2013.
As a quick sidenote, there's a couple of good channels at YouTube for anyone who wants to listen/see JC's previous keynotes (and other id Software stuff): idFan_EngineCoder, James Fisher. I hope he is able to pop in this year too, even after moving to Oculus...
There have been couple of screenshot leaks from their project tracker and HL3 has always been just some kind of early experimental stub there. It may not ever be developed into a real game. Listening Gabe's lately talks, to me it seems that Valve's focus for the future is on Left 4 Dead -type online multiplayer games.
Now, on the other hand, Source 2 has had truly massive resources put into it, so at least it will be very interesting to see what this novel engine has to offer.
It doesn't necessarily mean they're doing anything nefarious.
I either do not expect the company to be doing anything nefarious, but on this day and age of data surveillance, I'm glad that an alarm bell rings in people's minds.
Slashdot interviews for Richard Stallman, Eric Raymond, and now Theo, all in the last week?
I only hope we get the answers to all of them. If you watch carefully, every now and then there seems to be a Q&A session here with no answers ever posted!
I remember at openstack portland Shuttleworth gave a live demo that failed. Ubuntu fails constantly. While Redhat tries to normalize the high rates of change in Linux, Ubuntu injects massive changes all the time while providing no stability.
Well yeah. I believed in Ubuntu for a long time, because I wanted it to become at least a "de facto" distro instead of all the fragmentation. But indeed the quality assurance is really bad in Ubuntu. If you want a slow and buggy Linux, install Ubuntu.
All BSDs are more robust than Linux as they follow a much more conservative development process. Linux is in a constant bleeding edge R&D mode (which of course also means that you get cool new features quickly).
Just upgrade to Windows 8.1 and be done with it.

Me too. :)
What would be robust evidence?
Mantle seems to have woken up the OpenGL folk too.
Are we really supposed to believe that a Police Officer would know such geek trivia?
I have seen Bitcoin mentioned multiple times in mainstream news, so it's not completely impossible for people to have heard about Satoshi.
Most news articles do not have concrete evidence included.
GIMP, Inkscape, Blender, Darktable, Krita.
Complete amateur/semi-professional graphics artist toolkit.
Free of cost. Source code also available. Enjoy.
Yeah, that was kind of my suspicion in the next sentence in my message.

Nah, that's one of those joke pictures where someone installs all the possible IE toolbars.

I have sometimes thought that the best teacher might be another student who has just a moment ago barely (but still correctly) grasped the concept.

I'm glad that the angry idiot is leaving the house.

I take it you didn't read the last line of my comment?
Ah, correct. My apologies.
if the next release of windows doesn't restore Win 7 levels of usability, we will bite the bullet and spend the money for Macs.
Yeah, it seems the sanest option right now, looking at the crazy UI of Win8 and the quality assurance problems of Linux desktops.
Restore popular programs that were removed, like video player.
While Win8 by default wants to play videos in the Modern UI, it also ships with the same Windows Media Player desktop application than Win7.
