Not necessarily so. With some machines you don't have to do anything, with some you really do have to grab a bunch of stuff from the OEM website. It still varies.
Yeah, but is the Linux grandma one of those cases where she has been taught how to fire up the web browser, but for all other tasks this maintenance person has to hold the hand or dial in with ssh to set up things...:)
I actually think that an Ubuntu desktop would tick just fine (and be pretty secure) if only the point releases (version xx.yy.z) were installed and nothing upgraded in between.
With non-volatile memory, you are able to remove power from your machine through power failure or "hibernation", but the data stays where it was, in RAM.
Well, that's what suspend does already. Of course non-volatile memory would improve that too, as there would be no more need for the small current to keep the RAM alive.
Is it all really about simply agreeing and disagreeing with things? I have many times modded posts "Interesting" even if I otherwise might not agree with them at all. A system where people would only be pushing each other up or down depending on "who's right" sounds a bit dull...
But what would the point of participating in the study be any more, if you reported improper data?
That's like choosing to volunteer in a study where they would measure time people spend in front of TV, and then you would do everything to watch it secretly at your neighbor's so that you don't look like a sucker.
I think those AMD 45W quad cores (6??e series) were pretty cool (both metaphorically and literally). Intel rarely makes big desktop processors in such a low TDP range.
Good question. As a geek site, Slashdot should be a pioneer in these things. Full Unicode character support has also been missing for a long time. The box for notification messages on the front page feels a bit old too, something like the Facebook globe icon could be more sleek. Different color themes. Things like that.
Notice that DBAN might actually not be an option for him as he says in the post that he no more has any IDE hardware to plug such disks to. Ok, he could get some, but it'd be a bit of a hassle.
If I remember correctly, the classic dd command with bs=512 always takes much longer than a single-pass zero wipe with DBAN. Can someone explain, why? It feels like the HD is seeking all the time when using dd.
Could I watch DVDs? The regular VLC has a feature where I can play a DVD files folder just like it was the real disc. This is something I might desire to do on my phone.
Creepy. I myself have an old Sharp microwave (built like a tank) and it has this designed behavior where it runs the fan (along the light bulb) also when the door is open, creating a feeling that the machine is running. The turntable and magnetron are then not active though...
If we want to deliver these "cloud apps" there could be a system designed from ground up for applications instead of these horrible AJAX hacks. Make it have a real API for GUI components (pulled from network) instead of drawing some boxes with HTML. This way we don't have to have thick clients running native software but we would get a saner interface for this type of stuff. What do you think?
Check if some kind of frame runs under your table - you can zip-tie all sorts of stuff to it, such as a laptop power supply. Try also not to leave cables lying on floor, as they collect dust.
XP = crap, its 2K with a vomit theme and fucking stupid wizards to wipe your ass every time you click something, and when it first came out it was the cumdumpster of all hackers, yea you could send a pop up message box to anyone on the internet, took years to unfuck, SP2 is when it started to be respectable but still ran like a dead dog compared to 2k
So much agree. I don't know why even in Slashdot XP is often praised while forgetting that it was basically just 2K with extra bloat, bugs and security risks. I was a Linux man all the time of XP as it sucked so much.
In my bag, 2000 and 7 are the solid ones, others pretty much crap.
The guy goes from Windows 1.01 all the way to Windows 7 in VMWare.
I just today was thinking whether the same test could be performed to Ubuntu. Starting with 4.10, how many dist-upgrades could you make before breaking something too badly.

unexplained fire
Don't you think that's a bit of a flamebait?

6. ???
7. Profit!

My first Linux desktop was a Toshiba Satellite 210CT that came with Windows 95.
Ah. Those old Toshiba Satellites were actually a pretty nice line of laptops. I had a 440CDT which was my father's old.

Yup. As an interesting sidenote, it's also related to the etymology of the word "metropolis" - "the mother of all cities".

Agreed.
Aren't you worried that it might hurt your business?
And sometimes it's nice to participate in the discussion rather than just increment some number.

What's the typical home broadband in Sweden? In Finland, it's usually max speed ADSL for a bit under 30€.
Support networks how? I recently purchased a USB-ethernet device. I simply attached the device to my laptop and ethernet cable, and it worked.
After doing hours of research regarding to what USB ethernet devices actually work under Linux? ;)
