Reading books, magazines, and other text not on a computer screen is becoming a thing of the past. Blame schools, they're the ones who encourage and demand the children to use computers so badly.
Wiki anything is a dangerous tool without heavy moderation. With all the young kids who play vavle's games, I wouldn't be surprised if this is brought down if it gets too obscene. What excites a child more than posting dirty words on a page the entire world can see?
Good luck Valve, you're going to need it.
You're thinking of WoW emulation which was quickly shut down before release. There were lots of servers and there probably still are, but they're a bit harder to find.
Blizzard has been a much larger bully than EQ, although many people may think otherwise. Blizzard has gone as far as shutting down sites that link to this sort of stuff.
As a side note, emulated servers (for all games) are nothing in comparison to live servers (hosted by the companies). Winter's Roar was an exception, in that it changed many dynamics of the game, but it still wasn't the same.
Most emulated servers (for EQ) never go beyond 50 players at any time which sort of defeats the whole point of an MMO.
Everyone is entitled to there own opinion and I wouldn't downtalk how wrong or right you may be. Also, my opinion of Vanguard will remain as it has for some time to come.
Thanks.
You're making a pretty strong statement here buddy. The message I'm getting here is that all future Vanguard players basically have no lives, have zero respect for the average player, downtalk those not like themselves, and spend all of their time at the computer screen.
I have full intentions of playing Vanguard but I simply do not fit your ridiculous description. I personally have lots going on in my life. I have my family, my job, an education, and full intentions of playing this game. Will I spend all of my weekends playing? Nope - not a chance, I'm too busy.
Thankfully Vanguard has a strong community where the children and "whiners" are for the most part absent (unlike (most of) EQ2 or WoW). Now, I'm trying to not be rude, but personally I can't wait to be in a community without players like yourself.
Once again, I suggest you not judge soloing at this point. When I heard about the comparison of EQ soloing to Vanguard's, I interpreted it as simply having an option to do it when you wanted to or whenever appropriate. I didn't associate tediousness or boredom.
I only played the EQ2 beta for about a week, but if the death method hasn't changed (and I recall correctly) they do have a pretty good system, but there's just something about the idea that I would have my gear on me while trying to run for a corpse - it just doesn't make sense. My suggestion here is we just agree to disagree.
EQ's problems were minimal to me, and you're right, I didn't mind them. I don't believe I "put up" with them however, as they didn't bother me except for a few occasions - I thought they fit the situation quite well. Looting every item on my corpse didn't make me quit the game and I honestly hope that's not what made you quit, as it was really nothing too difficult. Dragging corpses made it a much more interesting experience than WoW ever gave me. It allowed for teamwork, something that I always enjoyed. With WoW, everyone ran to their corpse mystically and started up again.
I'm not sure how I can argue the fact that some games are better, without pointing to their "amazing" features on their websites - but I'd rather not advertise for them.
If you want some strict subscriber information, you can check out http://www.mmogchart.com/ - if you look at a few trends, EQ is slowly declining in subscribers. SWG was never that popular and has been declining as well.
EQ in the last few months combined their servers and got rid of at least half (I believe), which is more than enough proof for me that they are losing players.
I haven't seen a single word about them saying you won't have options for leveling, and I would honestly like you to show me (link the FAQ if you must) where they state "You will only be able to solo in certain spots, you won't have choices when you must group, and this will piss you off."
What would you suggest for death then? Because there are really only two feasible options, ease the hell out of it, or make it somewhat challenging. Funny, EQ has had the "challenging" view and people still play that game non-stop. My point is that some people want a difficult game that they have to use skill for. EQ used to be that game, WoW didn't even come close, and Vanguard *will* be the one that gets the job done. Too pussy to have a game that will challenge you? Then take your whiney self to WoW, or did you quit that one because it was too hard too? No offense:)
Harvesting: Don't assume until you find the facts. Tradeskills have been different in every game and this will be no exception.
I've read the FAQ more than enough and I know they are leaning towards the EQ ways - and that's fine with me. EQ was a success, as much as you may think otherwise.
Regardless of the reason EQ became so popular, its longevity does not rely solely on the station pass, in fact, the station pass barely effects it. Of the guild I was in before quitting EQ(about a year ago) after 4.5 years, I would say that even today, only about 15% at most use the station pass. People play that game because it's damn good, and while it may be past its prime, it's still a good game. Friendships are made and many things are accomplished.
You're right that many people play because of the effort they put in but hell, that's the same with other MMO's too, so you can't single EQ out on that fact.
WoW reached 2 million players because it was launched in a different era of gaming. Online gaming was still a new and unexplored environment back in 1999 when EQ was released, and only those that ventured into the area on their own really knew about EQ. The game was under-advertised before it was released and even during the first year or two people had never heard of it.
Fast-forward to 2004. Millions upon millions more people have internet connections - many have now upgraded to broadband and computer gaming is becoming "cool" among the younger generation.
Half of advertising is word of mouth, and it doesn't surpise me that even with all of their advertisements in the magazines and on websites, WoW, a lot of their subscribers come from recommendations. It also helped that WoW had 3 extremely popular games beforehand - as opposed to EQ's 0.
It's obvious to me that you looked in Vanguard's FAQ for reasons to *not* play. Sure, there are a few features that you may personally hate, but there's a hell of a lot more things that you'd love.
You don't want to play the game? Fine, but don't concentrate on the negative without considering the positive.
'soloing is like soloing in the original EQ' (that's pretty much a direct quote BTW). Honestly that's the firs thing that lets me know this game is for a different audience than me (and the majority of people playing MMO's now)
Excuse me? Your comment here makes no sense. How could you possible determine that thing game isn't meant for you based on this fact? From previous posts you've made I've determined that you prefer soloing, and EQ gave just about the best soloing environment/experience you could get. Then you claim that you are like most MMO players and that everyone will hate this. Could you just clarify the point you were trying to make here? I'm confused to say the least.
Corpse recovery will be a pain in the ass just like it was in the original eq (hope you keep a second set of great equipment in your bank because you'll need it to get back to your corpse)
This doesn't bother me at all - corpse recovery is way too easy in many MMO's out right now (some don't even HAVE reconvery at all). There should be some sort of punishment for dying - unlike WoW where you just toss over a few coins every day or so. Exciting? Not one bit.
Harvesting will be group focused.
Will this require groups at all times? Prove it.
and other things that scream 'THis is EQ with a prettier package'. things that chased away a large number of players (like myself) because it was too much of a pain in the ass and too big of a time comitment.
I'd honestly love to see your proof that he was behind the failure of EQ, or did you forget that the game was at it's peak during the Kunark/Velious era. After Brad left, the game only went downward and is left in it's current status: death.
I doubt that it will increase it tenfold in the slightest, and what mmo realisitically doesn't have forced grouping? There will be solo content after all, so you won't have to always be grouped. Tradeskills can be done with multiple people *but will not always require it*.
The original EQ didn't have these "mistakes" you speak of. It wasn't until these creators were gone that EQ became the waste of time and effort it is today.
The creators of Vanguard are making a 3rd generation game. They know what worked and what didn't in EQ1, EQ2, and WoW. They have this view that will allow them to create such a strong game that I promise, you will be stunned.
EQ2 isn't dying.. I will admit. It's a very new game and will keep going for a few years I'm sure.
But you have to be realistic about the other games in the package. EQ has been dying for years, and while it will probably keep going for another 4+ years, it's just not the same as the early years. Planetside is only good for a week or two, and then you may only want to login about once a month or once every two months, just to remind yourself why it's not fun. Star Wars Galaxies is simply not up to par with the other games, and while you may personally enjoy it, it's not a game for most people. There's just something wrong about it that can't keep the average gamer interested. I won't even go into the other 3 games - they aren't worth mentioning.
Long story short: EQ2 is probably the best game for this deal, but the others are dying. If you are into EQ and EQ2 heavily, then sure, this deal is great, but it's pretty much required that you be into the games before this package.
The reason they can offer these games at such low prices is because these games are dieing. Are they good games? For the most part - but their times have passed and they are, to say the least, not the best out there.

Informative to the XTREME.
Reading books, magazines, and other text not on a computer screen is becoming a thing of the past. Blame schools, they're the ones who encourage and demand the children to use computers so badly.
With this, how are the kids expected to learn how to please each other properly? They sure don't teach it in middle school.
The fact that our leader is intent on "exploring" the moon says something too..
This just in... EA has filed for a copyright on the programming, creation, design, and manufacturing of all video and computer gaming worldwide.
You sound surprised that the court system is taking its time!
Let's just say he wouldn't exactly pass with flying colors. I'm sure not *every* degree seeking student uses wikipedia.
I'm in need of a bit of clarification - I've seen the term used before but ignored it until now. At the end of this article:
In fact, AMD is now more expensive, at $1,031 (quantity 1,000), versus the 955 Extreme Edition at $999 (quantity 1000).
What exactly is "quantity 1000" referring to? Is that the number they've produced? Should I completely ignore this term?

Blizzard should be weary about what they're getting into, but regardless I hope wherever it's being held has enough strollers and acne cream stations.

You should check out the other posts under this topic.. I've made the note that EQ2 is more alive than ever quite a few times.
