I disagree. From my experience this is _not_ the reason for the gender imbalance. The reason is simply that women have, in general, different interests than men. Anybody denying that is at this time is denying solid scientific facts. And that makes the outreach program hugely immoral and repulsive and actually destructive. Don't get me wrong, I am happy to not be teaching IT Security to a 100% male group. But what I can clearly see is that the women in there are not some kind of female warriors that do not care about the discrimination or desire to fight through it. What I see is just "normal" smart women except that they care for technology. And while I am happy that there are some women that do care about technology, trying to trick, convince, pressure or bait women into technology that do not care about it is a huge disservice to both these women and to the technological world. Becoming a good engineer is hard enough if you care strongly about technology and have selected it as your education and career path from your own motivation.

When I did my CS studies, only around 50% made it to year 3. There was a large exam after the first 2 years back then. From a totally non-scientific survey of the fellow students I knew, most cheaters on the exercises did not make it and a few made it only after they had repeated a full year. Those that fought through the exercises themselves mostly made it.
It was later explained to me that the exercise were only graded to provide good preparation for the exams and to make it clear they are to be taken seriously. I totally agree on that. Unfortunately, that system was scrapped a few years later and the exams were made a lot easier. Not good at all.
I think they will be able to in the future, if they not already do it. The consequences will fortunately be a disaster for the student, because cheating in engineering subjects does not get you very far.

The first thing a good education successfully explains to the students is that only doing the work themselves will work. Some will get that, the others are lost to education anyways. BTW, we have a lot more knowledge about the origins of man's intelligence than you seem to realize. After all, it's been studied quite extensively. We understand what structures in the brain are responsible for what (mostly from study of brain damage). We understand to some extent the relationship between neurology and personality. We understand that consciousness is, neurologically, an extension of the ability to visualize yourself doing something without actually doing it. We understand that your actions can be driven from more primitive areas of the brain, and that's more likely to happen the stronger basic needs become.

Ever heard of cutting a cable preventing some technical function from being performed? Now, did that function originate in that cable? I do mostly too. The only use for USB 3.0 I have found is attaching fast disks. But that is it.
