Indeed. That is why the hypemongers have come up with the term "weak AI", i.e. the AI without the "I". Classically this was called automation and here it is the subspecies called "pattern recognition".
Incidentally, I disagree about the "few decades" for "strong/true AI". At this time we have zero indications it is even physically possible and hence, if it is possible, then > 50 years is a realistic timeline. No, human beings do not count as "reference implementation" for a number of reasons. It starts with us not even knowing what life is and we certainly cannot create it. Next, we do not know how humans generate intelligence and claiming that it must obviously be a physical process is just ignorant quasi-religious physicalism, not science. Just because we see the interface does not imply what is going on behind it. And we do not. Add to that that natural intelligence seems to require consciousness, where we know even less what it is or where it comes from. Now, I am not arguing for some form of mysticism, I am arguing that science is entirely clueless about what these things are and hence any predictions that strong AI is possible are vastly premature. Also note that what human beings have comes with free will (or at least some form of independence if you think free will does not exist) and that would pretty much make it useless as basis of a technical machine. All the problems with slave labor would apply. And in addition, there is indication that a technical implementation, if possible, of a human's mind would actually not be faster than the real thing and would need just the same slow education to be able to do anything worthwhile.
So for your "perfect" example the customer can get access bu changes on his side, while in the real case only the manufacturer can make access possible.
Well, possibly. I have stopped watching anything out of Hollywood a long time ago, with a very small number of exceptions. Just far too much concentrated stupid in there.
Anybody going into such a situation with a handle that screams "I AM MINORITY/FEMALE! I AM BETTER THAN YOU!" gets what they deserve. I have zero compassion for this particularly nasty species of jerk.
So SO is basically lying here. And whether it is "rude to newbies" or "telling off lazy slobs that did not even invest minimal effort to find out by themselves" is a matter of degree. I do think that just ignoring the lazy slobs is the right way to go, though.
I had such a situation on a mailing-list for some specific tool. After a few months, I just started to write an FAQ and point people to the items. Solved that problem rather nicely and with not that much effort. Answering "Frequently Asked Questions" is a _solved_ problem.
You must have a secret way to tell race and gender form a/. username! This is revolutionary! Please share it!
In other news, some people believe there can be racial and gender discrimination in a web-forum where you cannot tell race or gender of the participants. These people turn out to be morons. And yes, I will happily discriminate against morons all day!
Well, with a few exceptions, I now post technical stuff that may be helpful to others on my own website. Google finds it, the occasional email thanking me or suggesting real improvements comes in and other than that I am not getting bothered.
Well, mostly. I had some "alpha poster" jerks from some hardware forum recently email me that I was advising dangerous stuff. Turns out I was not and they were clueless. I dealt with that by referencing their claims, adding a comment why they were wrong and another personal statement that they were clueless jerks (de-fanged somewhat for legal reasons, but very clearly saying this for anybody with minimal intelligence). My website, my rules and no corrosive SJW bullshit.
And that is just it: People coming in, not having spent even minimal effort to find things out and demanding answers. But I guess these days if you are in a "minority" (non-white or female, although how the latter qualifies as a minority is beyond me...) doing this utterly arrogant and impolite thing is apparently acceptable and suddenly the others are the bad ones. Way to kill any meritocratic community and drive those with a clue elsewhere. And they will leave and find some other place not yet corrupted by corrosive SJW bullshit.
Because on Stack Overflow you could be the literal dog and nobody would know. As long as your contributions are good, nobody would care either. So is this really a push to be "welcoming" to incompetents? If so, then Stack Overflow loses its value and people with a clue will simply move elsewhere.
Naaa, you are mistaken on how this works. Of course, it is only people that do not want it that must be forced into it! Only that way can maximum misery be achieved.
Because a single number from a statistic tells the whole story, right? And when it comes to gender, everything must be 50:50, obviously. Hence I hereby demand that women stop giving birth to children, because that is the only way to fix that so far 100% of people giving birth are female! That cannot go on and obviously is an extreme problem!
In other news, people that look at numbers without understanding are still morons.
I think you can and this is by far not the first piece describing that. Here is a classic: https://blog.codinghorror.com/... Yet these people somehow manage to actually have "experience" because they worked in a role they are completely unqualified to fill.
I think that is a misinterpretation of the facts. Old(er) coders that are incompetent are just much more obvious and usually are also limited to technologies that have gotten old as well. Hence the 90% old coders that can actually not hack it and never really could get sacked at some time and cannot find a new job with their limited and outdated skills. The 10% that are good at it do not need to worry though. Who worries there is their employers when these people approach retirement age.
A 1:1 relation is not really a correlation, unless you want to muddy the waters.
And, very obviously, I was not talking about that. You seem to be part of the problem.
It is actually very simple to enumerate them: zero. The only thing automation can do these days is being dumb very, very fast.

Are you mentally challenged?
Well, possibly. I have stopped watching anything out of Hollywood a long time ago, with a very small number of exceptions. Just far too much concentrated stupid in there.
With USB 3.0, the bus was in a reasonable final stage. All this is just people trying to sell new hardware that basically nobody needs.
Anybody going into such a situation with a handle that screams "I AM MINORITY/FEMALE! I AM BETTER THAN YOU!" gets what they deserve. I have zero compassion for this particularly nasty species of jerk.
Walk into your computer? How is that going to help? You must be one of those "people of color, women or other outliers" I keep hearing about.
You cannot. SO is pushing a propaganda lie here, possible due to having been exposed to some corrupting SJW influence.

Nice!
That bad, huh?

Slashdot would immediately die if they ever implement something like that....

An irrelevant example, as that is a completely different situation. Software is incomplete without the license. The book is complete.
Well, the next step is revisionist history. That is if this does not already qualify. The stupidity of some people is staggering.

He did not license it. The code did not actually work without a valid license from MS.
