One Of LLVM's Top Contributors Quits Development Over Code of Conduct, Outreach Program (phoronix.com)
Rafael Avila de Espindola is the fifth most active contributor to LLVM with more than 4,300 commits since 2006, but now he has decided to part ways with the project. From a report: Rafael posted a rather lengthy mailing list message to fellow LLVM developers today entitled I am leaving llvm. He says the reason for abandoning LLVM development after 12 years is due to changes in the community. In particular, the "social injustice" brought on the organization's new LLVM Code of Conduct and its decision to participate in this year's Outreachy program to encourage women and other minority groups to get involved with free software development. "I am definitely sad to lose Rafael from the LLVM project, but it is critical to the long term health of the project that we preserve an inclusive community. I applaud Rafael for standing by his personal principles, this must have been a hard decision," Chris Lattner, tweeted Thursday.
His loss is of great benefit, in the long run. Anyone who would get mad like this is unfit for software development in the modern world. LLVM needs more hugs and less time and focus spent on boring old dry compiler code.
Less of him, more of women. All in all this is an upgrade for the LLVM community, congratulations.
I read the LLVM Community Code of Conduct and I don't see anything in it that should cause a hissy fit. It basically says to be nice to other people. But then again so did Jesus, and look how that turned out.

I think outreach is a good thing. I don't see how actively encouraging diversity is a bad thing. I do believe that prolonged preferential treatment given to one population over another is not good. There are good reasons for short term preferential treatment in order to build a diversity, but after a while, preferential treatment versus evaluating someone based on their merits, causes problems.
So he's leaving because the "LLVM code of conduct" says incendiary things like "Be friendly and patient." and "Be careful in the words that you choose and be kind to others".

When I started writing software no one was pushing me into it or giving me special encouragement because I had the right chromosome or skin color. Good for you, Rafael.

Some people support this only when it discriminates against the people they think should get an advantage. There's different ways to justify this. Everyone mostly agrees that basing discrimination on hate and prejudice is wrong. Other people think basing discrimination on an aggregate unfairness of baked in identity is OK. I and many others think discrimination is just across the board wrong. Some people don't want to be part of groups that advocate this form if discrimination.
To give you an example, a white, poor kid wouldn't be eligible for the Outreachy program. But a rich black kid would. How is that fair?

Except, of course, that this is predicated on the assumption that they're replacing competent people with less competent ones. Which is the usual strawman propped up to justify rebellion against such dangerously stifling policies as "consider other people's feelings".
And even in a meritocracy, one's merit isn't judged solely on the code they output. Code is generally not worth it if it comes with the price tag that of what these policies are trying to prevent. Someone who cannot tolerate being upheld to a basic level of decency without fear of repercussion is someone who is offsetting their other virtues by turning others away from the project. So to do those who turn a blind eye to ongoing abuses while complaining about their own comfort levels. We are costing ourselves people of merit to spare others much less discomfort.
At some point we need to remember that we're human beings surrounded by other human beings, not just drones who can ignore everything but our code output. We need to interact with people not just on our own terms, but on theirs as well. Refusing to do so when the ask is so trivial only reflects poorly on us. If all that truly mattered was the code, then we would not have these societal issues to begin with.
For a while we've seen attempts like this in the open source world.
Want to muscle your way into an OSS project, despite lacking the talent or skill (or willingness) to contribute anything other than drama, identity politics, and an insatiable urge control others (or remove them if they don't fall in line)? Force a Code of Conduct (which is often explicitly racist and/or sexist, dismissive of merit, and vague enough to be selectively enforced) down its throat! It even works on the largest, most influential projects, and lets you dictate developers' behavior on unrelated corners of the web!

As we've learned before, Google sees itself as being on some kind of social mission. They are not content to just give you good products and services, they intentionally USE those to influence you. The code of conduct doesn't just land from Mars. It's the result of various people in the team agitating for change. The CoC might well be being promoted to give people who have a political agenda, not a coding agenda, the opportunity to gain more control.
Software rewards a high degree of discipline, a coherent technical approach. It's sometimes necessary to prune code contributions that are rubbish in spite of the fact that this might hurt someone's feelings of self-worth. When this happens its easier to blame another's bias than your own incompetence.
It would be interesting to know the level of code contribution, and its quality, from the promoters of the CoC.

Plenty of situations where the code is "not even wrong". How do you explain to the person that their reasoning is wrong? The act of explaining will whoosh right over them. The rate at which these situations occur is low, but they happen all the time.

In every single one of these cases, the person never learned from their mistake because they never understood the mistake in the first place, even after hours or days of hand-holding, explaining the reasoning. Most of the people I work with in open source, I don't know anything about their sexuality and I don't care. Not one bit. I care about the code - does it work, and has it been tested to be be sure that it works. Requiring me t inquire into someone's sexual preferences in order to determine how to process their code submissions would turn me off greatly as well.

I am friends with one of the people who I believe founded and I know co-organizes Outreachy. I don't agree with her politics in certain regards. For instance I have signed a statement of support for Jacob Appelbaum who was accused of sex ???crimes??? but was never charged and the entire "evidence" was refuted by supposed accusers once people figured out who those accusers were (since it was a third party who brought on the attacks). Jumping to fire someone because of emotional baseless accusations for instance should be resisted. It's dangerous and in the case of free software projects undermines the very real objectives of such projects: developing software to do something.
The point that I'm trying to make here is that bringing in minorities is a worthwhile cause. However it should not come at the expense of others and emotional nonsensical arguments should be discarded. Someone is being accused of rape? Where is the evidence? If no evidence discard. Women and other minorities should be treated fairly and efforts to bring them in should not be funded by anything other than voluntary contributions specific to that effort and should be done outside of the software project.
A better approach to codes of conduct is to simply prohibit non-project communications. You should not be using a project to project women's outreach or some environmental cause. It's not because these aren't worthwhile endeavors- but rather because they are outside the scope of a free software development project.
I am a victim of violence. I've faced fear and persecution my entire life. I don't appreciate hate crime laws and I don't appreciate those wanting to banish those they dislike. It's reverse discrimination and that too is morally reprehensible. Hate crime laws and other policies like this frequently end up making things worse for other minorities-or even create a new persecuted minority- for example hate crime laws have resulted in activists being punished more harshly for merely using not-so-nice words against police (police being added as a protected class). I don't support murdering jews- but I don't think that matters when it comes to whose contributing to a free software project so long as they don't partaken in advocating the murder of jews within the project. Murdering jews is off-topic. And if someone is advocating that they should be told to quit it. The same is true of someone who is advocating womens outreach within a project.

A more thorough count of all "key" packages (as defined by testing migration criteria) in Debian Stretch, where I tried to guess gender based on first name, ldap, ~60 seconds of web search for that person -- shown 0.9% of last uploaders being female, with each female having only 60% packages on the average (although, with low population of data, this last figure might be not significant enough).

What I DO know is that the actual results they are getting is that people who can and DO work full time on the project are leaving, because they want it to be about the code, not about people who wish they didn't have a penis.
But everyone works with people who are not the best, I don't care what project you are on. Maybe you can say you got the best out of the limited pool to choose from, but you didn't get the best in every position. Every project always has a small subset that are just hangers on, doing the minimum necessary to not get fired.

The first 5 of those really conflicts with the traditions of compiler development. My experiences have always been a bunch of very intelligent people screaming at each other and aggressively trying to demonstrate their rightness and technical superiority. (I've never be in the LLVM community, so I don't know how it compares)
It's more than waiving dicks around. It's about showing who has the biggest brain. It's sort of a cross between a meritocracy and Lord of the Flies. It's probably not healthy, nor the most practical way to operate. But I do see the behavior in various degrees in many projects that are technical, specialized, and isolated from the rest of the industry.

Okay, I'll concede that you probably neither know nor care about the gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or ethnicity of any of the OSS projects that you participate in.
But I'll make a wild prediction: most of the people participating are cis-male, white and straight, and a majority of that number are all three at once.
See, the problem is less that you don't know, but that I can make such a bold claim without knowing exactly how each project is made up, and almost certainly be right. (I do, of course, accept the possibility that I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm not.)
Encouraging people that are outside the current OSS community can't hurt anything. These are people that are underrepresented, and I bet there are a lot of people out there that are never encouraged to go into it, or are actively discouraged from being there. I know two women that work at Google that consistently face men talking down to them, despite them both being experts in their field. One of them has a male assistant who is constantly telling people that come over to talk that he's just the hired help, and my friend with the PhD is actually the person that the visitor needs to talk to. Many men don't know what to do with that, and continue to try to talk to the assistant, hoping against all hope that maybe it'll just work out if they pretend a woman isn't in charge.
A couple simple anecdotes, consistently backed up by every woman I know in tech. Trans and queer people have their own struggles with being hired at all.
To object to this program is really the height of eye-rolling fragility. This organization just wants to make the pie bigger, not take anyone's slice of pie away, and this guy can't deal with that. However, until that day arrives, programs like Outreachy can help you to rectify that situation. Which apparently threatens some people who never had to worry about such things before, and who think that the current discrimination scenario is better because it hasn't affected them yet.

A job opening might usually get 99% cis-white male applicants, but with outreach, you could change that ratio to say, 50% underrepresented minority, 50% cis-white male. No guarantee the cis-white male won't win, but you change the pool of applicants. That's outreach.
Exclusion means opening up a job position *only* for underrepresented minorities. 100% you'll exclude cis-white males. This is immoral discrimination.
I am confident that your kid can do whatever she wants. The problem is that I need 100,000 more like her. He posted this on a private group inside Google set up specifically to discuss controversial topics. Someone else leaked this to the world at large and Google caved to the pressure of people of poor reading comprehension.

There still seems to be a lot of discrimination out there but I am do not know how this can be a huge deal in an internet based project, unless you have a name that identifies what 'group/s' you can be in. Setup mentoring centers directly in those communities, open to anyone in the community. By sheer demographic force, you'll hit the under-represented minorities, but you'll do so without being discriminatory. The sheer insanity of this clause is that in practice "safety" means "my feelings" and "privileged people's comfort" means "their livelihoods".
Google has some scope to discriminate in favour of "underrepresented" groups and still fill a room with talented people. But you can't "fix" the entire employment sector this way. Even if everyone is given the exact same opportunity to work in this career, doesn't mean that everyone who ends up choosing this work will represent the same breakdown as the entire population.
I'm not saying that the current environment is giving people the same opportunities, and I would support measures to improve that situation. But blindly discriminating against talented people based on them being white males isn't the answer.

I'm just going to leave this here... And the wage disparity may not be as big as the perception is, though I don't have the articles at my fingertips. (As I recall, the ones that show the largest gaps did not do a proper apples-to-apples comparison of the positions held by the women in the study.) But I still fail to understand why there's this dire need to get more women and more non-"caucasian"-cisgender men in this specific field. The lack of them is not in of itself a problem any more than a lack of male nurses is in of itself a problem either. I grew up as more or less an outcast among my peers due to my interest in computing. I'm sure many others who are my age or older that work in this field had similar experiences, at least in certain countries.

"Welcoming" is a relative to behaviour in general. If you show the same attitude to the person you are supposed to be "welcoming" to, due to his/her inborn special quality, as other random contributor without those qualities, you are not welcoming.
At that point you are breaking the ambitious CoC. You should either praise a commit more than its technical merit, or at least keep your mouth shut not to break the welcoming attitude. At the point where merge would really need to be refused, but any non-sugar-coated explanation on quality would be perceived as a racist or otherwise minority (eh, women as a minority!) attacking action as CoC would have opened an avenue to interpret it so, everybody has to start being dishonest regarding their values, and the value of chosen CoC.

This is the reason why Linus takes no bullshit as an excuse. The kernel would simply fall into an unrepairable junk if he would. I've experienced being talked down to by male and female colleagues at various points throughout my career. It is quite possible that they were not actually talking down to me, and I only perceived it. I also talk down to people when they don't seem to understand what I'm trying to tell them. If being talked down to is a real problem for anyone, they're overly fragile.
As for your assertion that one is fragile to protest reverse discrimination or affirmative action, I make two points. There is a position to fill, and some people are excluded from it based on their sex or color alone. This is part of a wider trend away from the principles of meritocracy. To stand firm on ones principles is not an act of fragility. Wherever positions of power are not filled on merit, society at large is adversely affected.
Imagine if we insist that the sciences start accepting as fact the submissions of uneducated people chosen based on criteria other than merit. That's the end-game.

I'm a white cis-male with a disability. Their policies doubly discriminates against me. People with disabilities are underrepresented. Lets bash some people in the head until they get brain damage, that way companies can improve their disability hire metrics.
I find it curious how certain "discriminated" minorities, often quite strongly politicized ones, want to get in projects which they observe to be full of political problems.
Expense of starting a new software project is basically zero nowadays. On the age of widespread open source and free, polished version and project management tools, forking an existing project is easier than ever. Still, I haven't heard of a single (at least successful) project where these do-gooders would have concentrated on doing their own work, instead of forcing others to their political straightjacket.
Believe it or not, this is not new behaviour. I remember reading a programme publication of a certain, established and mainstream Social Democrat party in Europe from 1920s or 1930s. It was about socialization of property, such as factories and whatnot. What really struck me on the programme was not that they planned to take over others' property under control of their political agenda, but that they actually actively supported the idea of letting capitalists first develop their businesses to fully formed form before taking them over.
Some people are not afraid of hard work and to start from scratch. Some people are very eager to see themselves as repressed, and entitled to take advantage of work others have done without any association with the political agenda or project of the "entitled."
No matter how wrong "politically incorrect" the views might be, I do value those who do more than those who demand. After all, someone has to do things in order them to get done. A compiler doesn't write itself on basis of a strong political programme, but as a result of effort put to writing of a compiler.

Best person for a job is the best person for a job. Saying you want someone who is "good enough" and has some other attribute that fits a "gap" you're trying to fill means you're not being capitalist at all. It also isn't democratic when you think about it. You have to look at polarising movements for such thinking. Sending a man to die in war is ok - but we don't want to send in the women! Well, men's lives matter too - and deserve the same respect. So saying we need more women or blacks or indians, mexicans, gays, trans-genders, or what ever your flavour - in a given position in a given sector - doesn't make a lot of sense. If you're generalising, and saying women make better teachers, or tall people are better at basket ball - then you may be correct - but employment should be based on an individual's merits, not some other attribute. So any movement that encourages one demographic at the expense of another is not a movement I can get behind.

That's irrelevant. What matters is the basis for the board's decision, and it wasn't based on what he "actually did", but what the board THOUGHT was Damore's intentions behind what he did.
The judgment is basically "ok, here's what he did. A bunch of it is protected by free speech, but there's a bunch that isn't protected by free speech. And we THINK when he did them, he had bad intentions/was wrongthinking, so Google can fire him for that"
You know as well as I do that there is no such thing as a meritocracy. This alleged "merit-based approach" is nothing more than a lie you, and others here, tell yourselves to justify antisocial behavior.
Ask yourself: If this was truly a meritocracy, why do underrepresented groups need to hide some aspect of their identity or risk being treated unfairly? The answer is obvious, of course. There is no meritocracy. They will be treated unfairly regardless of the quality of their work should anyone discover that they're not a 20-30 white male.
What I'm most interested in hearing, if you don't mind a bit of self-reflection, is why you so strongly want to deny that simple truth. Is it fear? Maybe you get a sense of satisfaction using abusive language? Do you think yourself superior because of your race, gender, or other property and want to maintain that belief? Something else entirely?

I only see this LLVM page regarding Community Code of Conduct, which doesn't include the content you claimed is part of their Code. Where did you get your content from (i.e. the part that begins, "Our open source community prioritizes marginalized people’s safety over privileged people’s comfort")?
Er no. I just poked around a bit on the LLVM and Outreachy websites and as best I can tell:
*This is about 1 internship slot, not the entire scholarship program (and not even that because it doesnt look like one happened with LLVM this year through Outreachy, period). Outreachy would provide funding for an intern in one of the underserved groups they cater to.
*It doesnt mean there can't be other interns outside that program
*This doesnt seem to effect the rest of LLVM's scholarship program

I know two women that work at Google that consistently face men talking down to them, despite them both being experts in their field. One of them has a male assistant who is constantly telling people that come over to talk that he's just the hired help, and my friend with the PhD is actually the person that the visitor needs to talk to. Many men don't know what to do with that, and continue to try to talk to the assistant, hoping against all hope that maybe it'll just work out if they pretend a woman isn't in charge.
It is great that you know some women. Did you also know that other women treat women in the work place worse than your examples of men treating women. They would expect the man to be in charge also, and would be ever worse in the way they treat the other women. It has been studied and is not a man thing.

I'm that Social Justice Warrior that some folks object to. What I have learned from this discussion is that if you really want to piss off the folks who don't like SJWs, having an affirmative action program is very highly effective. And you can start for less than $10,000 with this group: outreachy.org. Or if you don't have the cash, they can get it elsewhere and put a deserving person from a disadvantaged group (like a woman) in your organization for a 3-month internship. I am definitely going to make use of that knowledge!

Your statement is intentionally obtuse on multiple fronts.
- The fact a group is underrepresented does not necessarily imply they are not capable, that is your own assumption chosen to incense people.
- Coding today is significantly different than what it was 30 years ago. Everything is different about it, the market, the pay, the environment, the ecosystems. Making assumptions about what people would do today based on the people that did it last century it's like being surprised fewer people like 80s disco today.
If they CAN do the work as well or better then they've already been hired. If they CAN do the work at all they've been hired. Tech right now is under such scrutiny about being sexist and racist they're willing to hire pretty much anybody that has bare minimum capabilities as long as they're a minority, woman, or gender-deviant.
A large part of the problem is that people think software development is some cushy easy job. The reality is that it's extremely stressful and time consuming. Often, women get a whiff of how unbelievable the conditions are and nope the fuck out. Men are far FAR more willing to accept running their social life and health into the ground for decent pay. If you want more women in tech, tech needs to start treating employees like they're real people. Of course, once you get all the benefits included into the package the take home pay will be ground into nothing.
Women, on average, are unwilling to throw away so much of their life to work. Those women who are willing... ALREADY HAVE HIGH PAYING JOBS. Career focused people make money at the expense of happiness, the reason they get paid so much is that it has to be worth everything else in your life. You either don't have children or you rarely get to see them. You don't get to take weekends off because there's still work that has to be done, you friends are partying and you're working. Spouse? They'll be alone a lot so you have to consider if the pay is worth THAT too. No spouse? Good luck finding one who is willing to put up with you barely being available that isn't just in it for your money.
Most high paying jobs require sacrifices, and men (on average) are more willing to make those sacrifices. It's part of how men are raised, to be expendable and provide. To be useless is essentially to be dead, and it's the source of a lot of depression in men. It makes men socially primed to take jobs that pay well regardless of conditions. That's the reason you see men in development (and sanitation, and construction, and pretty much every dangerous job).
If you want women in tech, you'd have to change the entire structure of tech to be less stressful. If you make tech more welcoming, the wages will drop since there will be more people willing to do the job. The premium rates aren't because they're men, it's because they know the job is extremely rough and they have to find the people who are capable and willing to do it.
