I've been fond of Gentoo Linux's XML based markup language. Without any prior knowledge of XML, I was able to modify and extend it to meet my needs. It may make a good baseline for you to start with.

The thing that would stop us moving to linux is the VME support and propietry drivers like redundant ethernet driver/. I am sure it could be done but would take time and effort with no certain reward.
There is this VME driver: vmelinux
And blatently plugging my own :-)
VMIC Linux BSP Although we ship the VMEbus driver as part of a board support package for our single board computers, the VMEbus driver is a seperate module. It should work on any Tundra Universe II based VME board and is distributed for free under BSD license.

I set up a dual-head display this morning using Xinerama.

X -config worked well. In my case the configuration was RH 8.0 with an i815e chipset internal AGP video and a C&T 69000 on a PMC site.
The only problem I had was a V_BIOS error with the 815. I'm not sure what that was all about, but I changed the bios to us the 815 AGP card as default and everthing was cool.

  7. Re:This is great... on Sun to Sell Unbundled Solaris 9 · · Score: 1

I think you're hitting the issue dead on the head. Solaris is a wonderful and stable OS.... on Sun hardware.

I work for an x86 OEM. One of my responsibilities is testing support of Solaris on our commodity x86 hardware.

Frankly, Solaris's lacks support for most recent x86 hardware that we've used, and the hardware that is supported is poorly supported, or works with only a particular version of hardware (ex. tulip class NICs are listed as supported, but in reality it is only some tulip cards that will work; many do not).

What is Sun's motivation to provide _good_ and _broad_ support for commodity x86 hardware? I don't see it. And obviously Sun is having a hard time locating it themselves.

IMHO if Sun wants to support x86 they should stay on the course of supporting Sun hardware only, and supporting it well, in the tradition of Sun. Continuing the limited and poor support of x86 can only tarnish Sun and Solaris's reputation.

Leave the commodity x86 hardware to those who have the resources and interest to do it well.
