Well, it targets uploads at those worth bribing. So those with loads of bandwidth get complete copies faster.
It all depends on how much impact it has that those who don't seed leave the swarm earlier, since they finish faster. Likely no real damage to the network though.
Obvoiusly soneone has wanted to point this out, if it's explicitly written on the EU site. At the risk of sounding trollish:
We will not have our legislation locked down in ways that force EU citicens to buy software from one specific vendor. FUCK YOU.
We like to think we're better than the US. Apperarently our legislators are also bought off. If you as an elected politician get your salary from Microsoft Corporation or Apple Computer inc, please report directly to me for your ticket to Baghdad and the Saddam Hussein rope massage. Thank you for your incompetent attempt at running a democracy, please don't come again.
This is the first real experiment that shows elements in the Island of Stability could be long-lived enough to be useful. A half-life of 30 seconds may sound short, but compared to the nanoseconds of heavy elements outside the island it's an eternity.
The Ajax API is not a replacement. It probably lets you do what Google intended users to do with the SOAP API (embed their search into your web page), but it's not a "build anything you want on top"-style interface.
Malware that exploits insecure systems exists because the level of security the median consumer is prepared to pay for is lower than the level of security the top black hats can easily penetrate.
As to Iraqi suffering, I don't recall there being massive protests around the world when Saddam invaded Iran, Kuwait, gassed the Kurds, or filled various mass grave sites.
Wow. Just....wow. You are comparing the *actual* loss of human life from acts such as terrorism...to the admittedly huge problem of spam and spyware. You are actually equating death with inconvenience. Holy. Shit.
Time and money saves lives and prevents deaths. If the resources drained by spam were used to make safer cars, more lives would be saved yearly than are lost to terrorism. If those resources were used in sub-Saharan Africa, even more lives would be saved.
Last I remember, most MMO's it's against the ToS to trade for real money, so doesn't this law go against the ToS?
Many laws do. Just in case it isn't obvious to everyone: the ToS for WoW or EQ does _not_ override the laws of a sovereign nation and the decrees of a GM don't override those of Congress.
Forget a boot stamping on the face of humanity; that's the future for you: "microsoft fud notfud troll itsatrap google dupe evil internet hardware nvidia slashvertisement pigpile dupe sun esr fud ubuntu dupe microsoft dupe... "
OMG I want a LED belt buckle with scrolling text from Slashdot tags! Awsome!
An obvious solution would be to have both keep track of the numbers and verification that they match. Have separate companies / people handle the two machines, and you make fraud a little more difficult.
I think this one is even more annoying than a dupe. The Antikythera Mechanism is well known and has been discussed on Slashdot manymanymany times. This is akin to a story about the iPod headlined "Portable mp3 player released". The name "Antikythera Mechanism" doesn't even appear in the posting.
Did allofmp3 pay a cent to artists getting downloaded?
Does iTunes? No.
Apple pays the labels represented by the RIAA for the license to distribute songs. Allofmp3 paid a Russian state agency for licensing. The labels got nothing from that agency.
It's not about being payed for the RIAA/labels, it's about being in _total control_ of the distribution, including setting retail prices and in which formats and in what media the content is available, as well as how and by whom the artists may be paid.
The RIAA represents the copyright holders, i.e. the labels - they are the ones who get paid. Only the label an artist is signed to pays that artist.
I wish people would leave the artist out of the discussion. What the artist gets paid has _nothing_ to do with copyright; that's down to what kind of contract the artist has with a label.

BBC story, Google search.

I would launched earlier, but my wife, you see, not grow hair fast.
(gestures toward crotch for half a minute)
She thirteen.
So.. any chance of doing this with a Natalie Portman-looking virtual subject being tortured using hot grits? Just, um, curious.
An alternative approach: Hydrogen from algae. (PDF warning, scroll to page 4)
Ah, dammit, the Wikipedia page is easier.

What are you talking about? All I found on your site was some mushy poetry.
Does it matter? Normal people can't afford to defend themselves in court, so the money will roll in regardless.
Hmm.. Is that profit I smell?

Here, have as many sources as you want.
Lancet's PDF here and the Wikipedia summary (including criticism) here.

That's because you weren't watching European TV.

Inconvenience for millions equals death for many.
This kind of good-natured banter was what kept grammar and spelling nazis' spirits up during the long cold winters on the east front.

Don't worry, it's a common misunderstanding.

That presupposes the site was intelligently designed. Starting with that kind of assumptions is completely unscientific.
Bandwidth is not the issue, latency is. As long as we're limited by the speed of light, latency will be a problem. Hence the need for the 'A' in AJAX.

Just to prove you aren't scamming, could you have them mod this post +5 funny? No offense meant, I just want to make sure.
