    Perhaps they want to do a lot of terrible things that only their faith keeps them from doing. It would explain what happens when a religious authority proclaims that the rules don't apply to this or that particular brand of bad people.

    If I read this correctly, they claim priority over _someone_else's_ patent filing by referring to an earlier filing by themselves.

    It would be nice to get some more details on this. There are a couple of things that could be illegal about WoWGlider. The first is the name: using a trademark of Blizzard is probably not legal. The other, the DMCA thing would likely be something-or-other related to hacking.

    Selling tools that interact with other software is not illegal. You can sell software that automates eBay auctions, for example. As long as it doesn't act as a denial of service attack or contain material copyrighted by someone else (shipping a hacked WoW client w. all the graphics, for example) everything should be fine. Cheating in a game is not illegal.

    I don't know what to make of that. Obviously there are phones sold to end users by companies that, you know, sell phones. Vertical integration / vertical monopolies are, at least internationally, the exception rather than the rule.

    I really have nothing to add, but wanted to say that I agree completely. Most agile gurus would likely say ignoring the business people is the complete opposite of what they preach, but it can easily happen.

    I'm surprised no one has mentioned Agile in the replies. This looks like a textbook example of waterfall project failure. Why do you need the specs on the color of the background image to start coding? The week 2-12, "Go through iterations of determining specifics." should include coding and testing in the iterations.

    If the higher-ups claim to need the complete spec to make a decision on whether to go through with the project at all, tell them

    a) they need to know what it does to make that decision, not what color it is and

    b) coding and testing is done ten weeks after you start doing it, not after you were supposed to start.

    Hell yeah! That UN shold stop staring blindly at their narrow 'world view' and take a step back to look at the wider US picture! These 'United Nations' that try to wrest away control over every American's Internet from the Leader of the Free World can just go ahead and try!

    Seriously, wtf? The Internet is global and currently the US controls ICANN. Believe it or not, roughly 180 countries see this as a problem. It's not as if the UN is going to hand sole control over to China.

    No, you miss the point. They have been granted exclusive rights to a national TLD. It's not theirs to do whatever they want with - that right belongs to the Republic of Ireland.

    Perhaps I'm going a bit far with this, but anytime a monopoly abuses its position in ways that are illegal or immoral, someone on Slashdot claims it's fine because they've earned it or are otherwise allowed to do whatever they want to make money.

    As a more general rule, I don't want anything to have a larger scope than it needs.
     
    - Dialogs part of their own tab, functionality like menus, address bar etc not blocked.
     
    - Any sound from a tab in the background should be locked out.
     
    - If any bloody thing tries to resize the window, let it resize its own area rather than the whole Firefox window.
     
    I hate it when I open a link in new tab, keep reading the original page and the new tab resizes. It's also completely horrid when you've opened ten tabs to let them load in the background and some music starts playing without any way of knowing which tab to close to get rid of it.

    Some years ago I some forum or other I frequented used ':pwned' - the 'o' replaced by a stick-out-your-tongue smiley. I've used that myself in Messenger where ':p' is replaced with a smiley conveniently shaped like an 'o'. I always though that was the source of the word.

    Greenland wasn't given that name as some sort of horrible joke. It used to be GREEN.

    I started googling for an agreement I thought I knew existed between the US and the EU stating that the country where the server is hosted has juridiction over transactions over the net where the customer and the server are in separate countries. I'm starting to doubt it actually exists.

    I found this document discussing the issues. Sadly it's written in 1999.

    To elaborate, in Sweden both 'conservative' and 'liberal' are considered right wing, with liberal = economy liberal = market forces know best and conservative = social conservative = think of the children.

    Right = anti-immigration, being tough on crime, corporate interests etc. Racism to keep the rabble happy while the rich suck them dry.
