I don't disagree with your statement at all. What pisses me off is when people don't take the time to figure out what is happening on their machines before hooking up to the internet. The problem is dumb people are now more prevelent than ever. Microsoft doesn't help the situation like you said, but if you install redhat, or pick your favorite linux dist, you get alot of services that shouldn't be run as-is out of the box.
Then, the average user doesn't check for updates and is basically a sitting duck.
And the thing is, if it didn't impact the community, what the hell do I care if some dink has his box taken over. When it impacts the community as a whole, then I get mad. I go out of my way to try to run a fuly-patched box, with no known vulnerabilities, not only for my benefit, but so that the intnernet as a whole doesn't have to suffer from my ignorance when my box is used for a DDOS or what have you.
I guess it all boils down to the fact that people need to be more aware of what is going on when they connect full time to the internet.
Who knows, maybe I sound arrogant. I just think it should be common courtesy to make sure your shit is squared away.
End of story. If a few dumb assholes would patch their shit and keep current with it, then the majority wouldn't suffer. But no..........
This is military logic, one person screws up, and the whole unit pays the price. The problem is, we can't give a blanket party to the fucking dumbasses who refuse to keep current with secuity patches. This goes for Linux/Windows/Macintosh/Amiga/NeXT/BeOS/Solaris/CP/M/DOS/HP-UX/AIX/OS9/QNIX/FreeBSD/OpenBSD
I don't care what you run, if you don't keep current on security patches, you are an asshole.

Dude,
You burn the strings off, not cut them. Burning them with a lighter will help prevent the strings from unraveling....at least that's what they taught us in boot camp.
the DNS flurry of activity that occurs when one of those fucking ads pops up? Especially the X-10 ad. From I understand, it os some sort of Rube Godlberg load balancing thing to serve the ad from a server close to you.
Essentially, you get 200-300 pings on your router's external interface port 53 in 1-3 sec per ad. Apparently, they take the lowest response time and serve from there. I run LRP and we discussed it on the mailing list a few months ago. I think you could view the threads from Geocrawler archives.

It's about Freakin Time there has been some good news about earnings. I dumped $3900.00 in at $73, sold at $119, took the profits and bought dsl.net at $ 19, sold at $29 and dumped the whole load into Andover.net. As we all know, Andover was taken over by VA Linux and now I can't even buy a gas grill at the current prices.
Boo Hoo.

I rented a Ryder truck for business, going from Rochester NY to Buffalo. Get out on the freeway, and mash on the freakin pedal. as soon as the needle reached 65, the pedal started pushing back! No shit, this thing had a govenor that made it impossible to go over 65 mph. I have never had a rental since that had that on, but what a trip to feel the pedal push back.
The only thing missing was a recording of my mother's voice yelling at me to slow down!

The ping times are long because of a small cable hanging near Uranus

So how much you want for one? I'll give ya $50.00 for a black one in a large frame size, and I want all the goodies. Oh, can you deliver it too?
