I so agree. CS may help you program, but it's constructs or methods that it teaches you. It's just that most places use programming as the mediumto teach the concepts. If anything CS is a math science more than say an engineering one.

  2. new: Netatalk is for sharing AFP/PAP/etc on Using Macs In The Work Place · · Score: 1

Not sure why people talk about Netatalk instead of SAMBA or Netatalk instead of "NFS? Netatalk is a package for sharing AFP over AppleTalk or AFP over IP. It will give you what Apple calls AppleShare access to disks on a UNIX based server. It can also do PAP for printers and can do some stuff for SLP and the like.

MacOS X has built in AFP over IP sharing. So netatalk is virtually uselss. However, netatalk is great on a UNIX server for sharing out volumes to AFP clients - such as home directories at a university, ISP, or corporation.

For MacOS X clients - AFP is still better than SMB - according to Apple.

Now - we just need ACL's for AFP :)

  3. This is a possible a normal observation.. on Windows 2003 takes 5% away from Linux · · Score: 1

Win2003 is a new environment. It's typical for new OS's to capture the early adopters of technology. MacOS X saw a large spike when it came out, I even remember the OS/2 spikes when Warp and 4 came out.

Also, Netcraft shows trends but over a long term not so much over the short term. Their information is largely based on a skewed data set - people who volunteer the server information. Plus the things like the Verisign's new DNS wildcard "feature" and major hosting sites and alter the stats highly.

Let's all just hope the best product for the best solution wins. If the best product is Windows - we should use it. (although, the doubter in me highly doubts that)

  4. Mac to Linux to MacOSX - I switched twice on Flirting With Mac OS X · · Score: 1

I started out liking Mac's simple and work the way it says it works the first time after being a Windows lab admin. Then, a colleage and friend introduces Linux and I realized the power of Linux and the future growth. I fell in love, and still love. When Apple went BSD, and blessed it with a gui and set of api's that make it desktop and enterprise friendly, it was the best of both.
Funny now that the colleage who showed me Linux, now owns a TiBook, and two other colleges joined me with an iBook. The killer is, they are also very refined and it's the small things that you experience that win you over. (like keyboard softness, sleep time, battery, size, soft edges, weight, plug and works!!, etc)

Although not foolproof, BIOS/FIRMWARE password to prevent floppy/CD booting is key. We are talking less then 2% of the people can will be able to break this, let along actually try to do it.

That was tried to be pushed on the University I work for as well. Although the site looks good and what not, it's definatly geared for smaller schools and I'm sure helps them a lot. Larger big 10 schools use SCT's banner software, but don't use the Pipeline partner for thier WWW site. IF you want to buy it with no ads, it is like thousands of dollars and there are yearly or the like fees if I recall.

Apple was unable to provide our University with information about our order though, I'm sure they are playing it safe..
