  1. Is this for real? on MS Struggles to Discredit Linux · · Score: 2, Interesting

I know Microsoft is (and has been) trying to discredit Linux, but this just has the feel of a sham.

The opening paragraph (after the warning) makes me think that the writer is saying "...and don't copy this (wink, wink) because we don't want anyone to know what we are planning (nudge, nudge)."

I'm just not convinced that it came from a Microsoft exec.

  2. Was this really necessary? on Review:Fellowship of the Ring · · Score: 0, Redundant

I saw "The Fellowship of the Ring" on Sunday night. (Yes, I went to the Hollyweird premier.) I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't had a headache, but were all the changes necessary? No Glorfindal, no explanation of Gollum's ancestry, Narsil on display in Rivendell instead of in a scabbard on Aragorn's hip, and the Kodak moment that was the Council of Elrond...

I guess I will have to wait about 20+ years before someone else gets a chance to bring LOTR to the big screen again. Maybe this time correctly. I hope...

  3. Re:Christianity... on Tolkien's sources: Icelandic Sagas and Beowulf · · Score: 1

Gandalf was more like a low-level angel. Read "The Silmarillion" for the details. Sauron was of the same order (or maybe one higher) than Gandalf, Saruman, etc, but fell under the sway of Morgoth, the first dark lord...

If you really want a Biblical comparison, read "The Silmarillion."

PS: Saw LOTR last night. Acting was wonderful, costumes and effects were fantastic, the director needs his head examined...

  4. Old idea, patentable? on TiVo Infringes On Pause Patent · · Score: 1

I can't see how anyone can patent an idea like "buffer incoming stream while last image shown on screen" since it sounds like a no-brainer of an idea. How else would someone pause live TV? After all, isn't that how using multiple VCR's connected to a mixer works? The TV networks have been doing that for decades.

Now, if they wanted to patent the technology (this much RAM with a widget controller and a framistat regulator wired up like this...) then that might survive the Supreme court

  5. "Megahertz Myth" a myth? on Intrinsity Claims 2.2 Ghz Chip · · Score: 2, Insightful
I took a look at the web site referenced in this article and saw Steve Jobs talking about how the 800 Mhz G4 was faster than the 1.7Ghz Pentium 4. My question is this: what OS was running on the Pentium for? Was it Windows (known to be a resource hog) or a Unix/Linux OS? My guess is that running a better OS would give faster results to the Pentium.

Here is a challenge for Mr. Jobs: run the same Linux distro (ie, Red Hat for Intel and Red Hat for G4) on each machine and then do the bench marks. And while he's at it, try this new micro-processor for speed...

  6. The right to block anonymous posts on Right to Post Anonymously Protected · · Score: 2

If some people have the right to post anonymously, then I want to have a tag inserted in that post so I can automaticly shit-can such posts. That includes e-mail. My philosophy is that if you have something to say to me, then you should be open to responses. An anonymous post (e-mail) cannot be replied to if there is no return address. Just my $0.02 worth.

  7. eBooks cost to much on This Book Will Self-Destruct In 10 Hours · · Score: 2, Insightful
I don't like the idea of paying money to view an eBook for a short period of time because I don't read as fast as others. 10 hours would get me about 140 pages of most authors (maybe 250 for Tolkien and Asimov). I would end up paying about the price of a physical book for something I could never re-read without paying more money.

Now, about my subject: I used to work in a chain bookstore (Waldenbooks #642), and I know how much they pay for books (about 60% of cover price). Now take out the cost of printing (about 20%) and eBooks should cost about 40% of the paperback price (why pay $20 for an eBook just because the store copy is in hardback?) not close to full price! No matter how much I love "The Lord of the Rings" I would refuse to pay more than $2.50 for each volume and I would want to read it as many times as I choose.

I can understand if they wanted to operate on the honor system like a public library does, but since I'm not taking a physical item from them I shouldn't have to pay to "borrow" and eBook. If they want security they can encrypt it so it can only be read by my reading device (in this case a Palm IIIx).

I wonder if Gates of Redmond is behind this?

Last November, 'Mojo' Leibowitz of Foundation Imaging showed off some of the work that went into the upcomming re-release (on DVD and tape) of "Star Trek: The Montion Picture" at LOSCON 27. The clean up job was fantastic, and 'Mojo' showed pictures of the physical model (from ST3/ST4) that was used by the 3-D modelers. 'Mojo' wanted to have the DVD released on January 7, 2001 but Paramount wanted to wait. (If you don't get the joke, shame on you!)
