  1. Re:I was one of those people on Some Hope During Registerfly's Meltdown · · Score: 1

back in october of 2004 i attempted to transfer FROM registerfly to another registrar. Which required my whois information to be correct. I had moved since then, and also had a new email address... So i change my whois info. waited the 72 hours like they said to. nothing. called them. spent a hour on the phone with a rep, who ALSO changed my whois information. He said wait 72 hours and it should be up to date. Long story short, after better than 2 years, 3 complaints to icann and 6 more tries to change my whois information, ITS STILL NOT RIGHT.

once again a blanket statement that is incorrect. GENERALLY botnets aren't using public IRC servers. However ive seen several botnets run on servers that I have had oper rights on.

In theory, there is nothing stopping the "researchers" from having the zombies identify their OS's, download any patches, install a personal firewall and automatically updating anti-virus program and then removing the original infection.
with anything post windows xp its as simple as running systeminfo from cmd. gives you a complete list of installed patches service packs and much more useful information. im sure someone with enough motivation could get a web based A/V to run from an "infection" even start the windows firewall (not the best but a start). Once again I think the question is not the logistics behind this idea. Its getting someone to do it, and then them not taking it hard from behind from world governments.

You know if they really want to combat botnets, why not "recruit" some of the people who have been fighting them for years. IRCOP's have been fighting botnets designed to slam servers and break links on networks and doing a pretty dang good job for quite a while. A specific instance comes to mind on Rizon when there was a 30k botnet that was set up there. A group of opers literally tore down the clients by issuing remove commands. Seeing that i did a similar thing on a smaller network I was an oper on. Come on if you are going to "fight" the botnets fight dirty. Recruit those who have run them in the past and since decided there are better things to do.

actually i run a small webhosting company, and i have one off site backup customer. the way i have it set it up, someone at the office starts a maketorrent every night saves it in a place that the autoget from my server can get it, adds it to the tracker, duplicates the existing backup, and then hashes against that data. i have it set to 128kb piece size. all managed by simple perl scripts. usually the hash finishes by 9-10 pm and the complete upload, over a simple 768/768 sdsl line, is usually finished by about 5am, depending on how badly they abused the database that day. as for security on the server, this machine is dedicated, so i have it behind a nat device with only a port for the bit torrent connection open. machine spec is a p3 800 with 256mb of ram and fc3 and 3 160gb drives in a raid 5. works great, but took almost 20 hours to get orking correct.

  8. recent students point of view on Improving Education? · · Score: 1

in my opinion, the education system does need alot of help. as others have said, the 'everyone gets a medal' idea is a complete joke. its an education system, not a feel good system. alot more emphasis needs to be put on teaching people proper sentence structure and spelling. it should be about helping kids to get their ideas across clearly, not "ok little sally you need to put a capital letter there, and a semi colon there." having spent many times a day with a person who speaks, and you have to consicously try to unscramble their thoughts that made it too quickly to their mouth, i tend to lean away towards perfect written grammar. its all about the words you use, and making your point, not "hey i can use capital letters, use excess punctuation and big words." on the other hand, my perspective is a little skewed, im an ircop on a few small nets, and i dont mind peple not capitalizing everything (in fact i dont use them myself) but its a royal pain in the backside, and one of my personal annoyances when someone goes "zomg wtf can u hlp me plz" or something. lazyness is not the key to success.
