  1. Re:Really a big deal? on What's On Your Hotel Keycard · · Score: 5, Interesting

You often hear about people that have had their ATM cards wiped by the magnets used to disable the security tags in stores. Many stores have 'Don't place cards here' signs to prevent this. If the hotels had 'Please place keycards here' on a similar magnet when you sign out then that would wipe them and problem solved.

There is one caveat: Symantec counts only those security flaws that have been confirmed by the vendor. According to security monitoring company Secunia, there are 19 security issues that Microsoft still has to deal with for Internet Explorer, while there are only three for Firefox.

Simple way to look good in this report, deny the existence of the flaws!

  3. Re:Security is a process! on IE More Secure Than Mozilla? · · Score: 1

Security can be examined in a similar way to risk analysis, the likelihood of something happening multiplied by the magnitude of the affect it has.

Your very likely to pick up tracking cookies but the affect to your system is minimal and can be easily remedied.

Your chances of picking up a virus are less but the affect they have on your system is much greater.

What are the chances of a buffer overflow exploit being applied to your PC? Small I'd hope, but the affect could be catastrophic.

The vunerability to a security exploit should be balanced by the likelihood of actual exploitation.

I agree that the use of 'intellectual property' is more often than not misused and perhaps I have in this post.

IMO the point trying to be made is that by Google abusing their trademark on G-Mail it will affect all their IP relating to it.

I wonder if they have any patents or copyrights that relate to the G-Mail trademark? Losing the trademark would potentially cost them for the investments they've made in those patents/copyrights?

Until we can effectively manage our planetary resources we will continue to produce enough food to feed everyone but fail to do so because it doesn't have the correct geographical distribution and the producers are more concerned about the economic return than feeding everyone.

As a consequence of the act, under current law, no copyrighted works will enter into the public domain in the United States until January 1, 2019 at the earliest, when the copyright on works created in 1923 would expire.
