Though I imagine on Linux you were talking about a driver problem.

Actaully there is something physically wrong with the disc. If there is a filesystem on the disc it will mount in Linux. In Windows you should be able to browse the files on the disc (includes all the .cda files... the songs). This is not possible with this CD. In Linux it doesn't mount and in Windows it lists itself as a Compact Disc, not an Audio CD and when you double click on the icon (cd drive) it comes up with a blank window... exploring it comes up with an error. The CD does not autoplay when inserted into a windows machine (any version of windows). And will play very choppy with Media Player in digital mode, but will play fine in analog mode. I was able to rip it using cdparanoia without any problems or errors. And yes there is a data track on there, mp3c (my mp3 ripping/encoding frontend) found it.

A friend of mine also bought the CD and his computer doesn't recoginze it as a disc. He gets the same results if he puts the CD in the correct way and upside down.

There is a problem with the UK version of Kosheen's Resist. Awesome music, but horrible record label to produce such a worthless CD (physically that is).

I just bought Kosheen's CD Resist a couple weeks ago and it is an Enhanced CD (it has a video on it). One big problem, the CD doesn't mount (or list files for those windows users out there) when put into a computer. The only way to get the CD to play in a computer is to use analog.

This sounds like a copy protection thing to me. The disc isn't labeled as such and is put out by Moksha Recordings part of Arista/BMG UK. I am not the only one to have this problem either... could it be a simple mistake in the master CD... why wouldn't it have been caught... I'm leaning towrds copy protection here.

Note: Kosheen's CD probably isn't released in the States yet.

If the answer to those questions is yes, then fair use must apply to DVDs because they are not of the highest quality.

  8. you could be being monitored right now... on Employers Logging Keystrokes-What Can You Do? · · Score: 1

This is a fairly common practice, at least with the DoD. Every computer in the US Air Force is required to have a similar statement on the computer itself and when you log into it.

Now the big question is, why would you not expect this. It is well known that anything transmitted over a network that is not encrypted can be monitered by anyone else. In the USAF we have to sign a statement that says we constent to monitering on all communication devices. This to me at least is really common sense, unless it is encrypted anyone with a receiver/scanner can listen to the radio communications on the flight line. Even as a home user, once your communica leaves your computer, you are subject to monitering, by anyone in the world...

So why are you so worried about this... those computers are there for you to use for offical uses... why should this bother you? Knowing about it is better than not knowing it is happening, that way you can watch yourself... if you really don't want to be monitored... quit... but remember that the next time you send an email from home, that anyone in the entire world could have seen that email, without you knowing it...

  9. Re:Property rights? on Shut Down Metallica, Not Napster · · Score: 1

Finally, there's a big educational opportunity. With all the press, someone should really analyze (survey says...) what the REAL cost is to the artists. I'd like to see a breakdown of people who got metallica mp3s online, and see what the percentages were of:

People who pirated the music who WOULD have bought it if it wasn't available

People who pirated it first, and bought a CD because of it, who wouldn't have otherwise

People who pirated (technically) the mp3, but own the CD already (for me, its faster to napster a copy down than it is to rip a copy of a CD)

You are so right here. When I download mp3s it is because either I want to hear what an artist sounds like or don't know where to buy the CD (if it is even still being produced). I have bought more CDs after hearing an mp3 of a particular artist than I ever though I would. It brings a whole new meaning to previewing before you buy... so you don't buy the crap artists. There are time that I get mp3s of entire albums that I would never have bought anyway (the music just isn't good enough to spend between $13-$20 on). Personally if I like the music enough I will buy the CD.

  10. Printed out weighs Paperless on Are Printed Manuals Dead? · · Score: 1

When a manual goes paperless, many decisions need to be taken into consideration: format (pdf, html, text, ms word, etc), screen res of the user, searchablitly, etc. The format should be an easy choice, for the most widely usable, HTML should be picked. Now the screen res is the hardest one. There have been many times when reading HTML docs theat the info I needed was in two places, in the viewable area of the page and just outside of the viewable area, on a res of 1280x1024. This is probably the most annoying thing of them all, well except for a format I can't read. Some times the searchablity of paperless docs leaves a lot to be desired.

Now with printed docs, anybody can read them, unless you don't know how to read or are blind... both are unlikly if your using a computer. The printed docs are always a good idea, for example, what if your program to read the paperless docs doesn't work correctly are is completly broken... guess your stuck until you fix the problem with your program. Printed docs are easier to find things in usually, with both the contents and the index.

I think it is clear that I prefer the printed manual over a paperless manual. Although if I had to have what I would really like is both... the uncut full blown docs in a pronted form and a paperless version that is fully searchable.

It kinda looked like a spider, I believe (it was close to 3 years ago that I saw it) it had CCD cameras around it so they could see in side. The only other thing I remember is it was silver and very cool looking... unforatunely I didn't learn much about it back then... oh well.

OK... this is coming straight from an American living in the UK.

Yes the phone jacks are completely different in both size/shape and electrically. US phone lines use 2 of the four wires in the cable while the British phone system uses all four. To make this worse the 2 extra wires are for the ringer from what I can determine as well and the 2 wires it does use (the center ones I believe) for the actaully signal are reversed.

This is really easy to fix, find a Military Base (in the UK) that has the US Military on it and buy a cross-over cable (British to US). This could be difficult however because only US military and dependents are allowed to buy things from the BX (Base Exchange), but go to a Tandy store near one of these bases and you should be able to find one.

Also consider the equipment you are bringing, can you switch it to run on 110/115 VAC at 60 HZ and do you have a US style power plug or an adapter (much smaller than the native British power plug)?
