The more interesting laws I've found are those requiring motorcycle riders to wear helmets. Ostensibly, it's to reduce health care costs when a biker gets turned into a vegetable... practically, that's a matter for insurance co.'s. I.e. you get hit w/out a helmet, then you're not covered. If you're not covered, then it's your debt and you're screwed. Other than a few extenuating circumstances, it doesn't actually cost the state or other taxpayers - just the insurer and insuree.
I say, if my fellow 2-wheelers want to skip the helmet and go pavement surfing, then let them. If they want to be idiots, thats fine - they just have to deal with the cost. Hell, I signed a paper for my ins. co. saying that if I got into an accident w/out a helmet, then I'm not covered. I also always wear a helmet. Personally, I'd like to see similar discounts for wearing body armor - you wear it, you get a discount. You get into an accident w/out it, then you owe back payments (plus interest) on the higher premium. Between training, experience, and safety equipment, I'm probably one of the safest riders around - but I still pay $180/mo because I ride a sport bike, even though I have 0 tickets, 0 accidents, and always wear full body armor (yes, even in 100+ degree weather). As far as I can tell, helmet laws are either one more way to collect revenue from fines, or to attempt to protect idiots from themselves. I just wish there was less reliance on laws (esp. the "absolute letter of the law"), and more on personal accountability... but looking around at modern society, I doubt that'll happen any time soon.
If I'm correctly understanding everything I've read so far, you need to actually click and open the.jpg attachment in order for the exploit to work, so no... you shouldn't be infected by just leaving your computer on. (MSN Messenger doesn't have an option to auto-accept incoming files)
I seem to recall an option in one of the other IM clients that would accept incoming stuff for you though... I can't imagine who thought that "usability" function was worth the security risk though.
I've always enjoyed the "controversial" profs... however I've found that most of my profs simply beat their beliefs into the students, and berate anyone who questions what the prof holds to be true. My professors frequently push their own beliefs and then use grades to enforce it,.. any complaints to the University are returned "inconclusive", assuming you get a response at all. Those profs who push the students to question *everything*, are few and far between in my experience, but often the most fun to take classes from. (YMMV)
I have an iAudio X5, and absolutely love it... toss in a good set of ear phones (I like Shure's E series), and the sound quality is absolutely amazing. I haven't found any other audio players yet that have as good of a frequency range or quality, especially on the low end. As far as hard drive vs. flash, I can't say it's caused me any extra concern: It's a pretty solid little unit, and has easily held up through all the abuse I've put it through. Definitely give it a look if you get a chance!
"As for Unix being 'inflexible,' 'expensive,' and 'complex,' we feel those are terms much better suited to the closed and proprietary world of Windows."
Ahh yes, the good old "I know you are, but what am I?" retort. Bravo Sun, bravo!
Gin & tonic glows a rather eerie blueish-white under UV (from the tonic water, iirc) In the US, you can buy dry ice at nearly any grocery store... usually just have to ask for a clerk to help with it.

As a conservative prick, I find that comment highly offensive. ;)

Not to mention, Cowon officially supports Linux, which was the main reason I originally bought the M3, then the X5.p hp

For the love of sanity, PLEASE mod parent up! I'd do it myself, but I killed the rest of my points this morning. :(
Just installed, and it's Google Desktop 20051101-en
I can't decide if the fact that this was moderated insightful rather than funny is more disturbing or amusing...

And as always, Snopes has some interesting info to add. I've gotta say, I've heard more unnerving sounds from my roommate's bedroom at night.
