  1. DRM SchmeRM on Stallman: eBooks Are Attacking Our Freedoms · · Score: 0

DRM and sharing are all on the publisher, when the book is published to the kindle the publisher has the option to let the book be DRM free and lendable. So not so much Amazon per say but backwards ass publishers who can't embrace the present, let alone a future.

  2. Ditched the cable on Ask Slashdot: Are You Streaming-Only For Home Entertainment? · · Score: 0

I put up two antennas pointing at two different markets, I live in between Rochester and Buffalo NY, I get 31 channels, I use two LAVA HD2805 amplified anttenas which have dual outputs, those go to silicon dust network tuners. I use a HTPC on my main TV with Windows Media Center and have XBOX 360's in two other rooms for media center extenders. I archive my recordings on a Windows Home Server. Of course Netflix is available on all of them. I don't care for HULU that much. The few shows I did watch on non network tv I can purchase seasons pretty cheaply through Itunes or Zune Marketplace. In all there are only four shows that I watched on cable channels which comes out to about 90-100 dollars a year just purchasing the seasons. Compared to 85 dollars a month for an HD-DVR it seemed like a no brainer. The HTPC cost $425, the silicon dust dual tuners were $160 Total, and the antennas were $100 total. So for $685 total I have a 4 tuner whole house DVR and the picture quality crushes cable.

  5. Lessons learned on SSN Required To Buy Palm Pre · · Score: 0

Sprint at one time approved everyone with no deposit. This came to a bad end as they were forced to write off millions in unpaid accounts. It is one of the reasons the company is doing so bad. Even when they approved everyone with no deposit they still required a credit check. Those exceptions who did not get "approved" were those who still owed Sprint money from previous service. All phone prices are subsidized and they give you a break on the price by you agreeing to a service contract. Sprint offers a no contract deal at a 10 dollar a month penalty and you pay full retail for the phone. They still require a credit check. If you have a low 400 - 650 score on your credit you are most likely not going to pay your bill. They are in buisness and have a right to protect thier interests ie profits. I am baffled that this gentlement doesn't remember giving his ssn to verizon when he signed a contract with them. Off course thier is a way to not give your ssn and still have credit run. It takes a while and in the end they still get your ssn. Most retailers wont use this method because it is a pain in the backside.

Especially if your still running XP, One care offers a pretty user friendly back up solution (included with vista). Plus a better than garbage virus protection. If you are already a one care customer its only $30 more for Office, Seems fair. I myself use open office and NOD32. So it would not provide savings as I like the protection NOD32 provides. Its still not a bad deal.

RadioShack did the same thing when they got sued. They screwed over thier employees by paying overtime. They cut initial salaries by allot of money and make you work 55-60 hours to make up for it. The only people that won from the law suit was the corporation, not the employees.

I would not buy a sony li-ion battery as .5 billion dollars in recalls last year. I say radio shack has the best batteries with energizer coming in a close second (they are made at the same manufacturing plants). http://www.imaging-resource.com/ACCS/BATTS/BATTS.H TM [imaging-resource.com] The Radioshack batteries listed here are 1600MAH model wich they do not sell anymore its a 2000mah now. So performance is greater.

  14. Re:Bad questions, what did they expect? on Spy Girl In Game Stores · · Score: 1

Well I my self am a retail manager. People come to my store because thier stupid and want help. I applaud any clerk (which all these retailer have, just clerks) to answer questions even half way right. I mean come on even stores which you would expect the person to know what they are talking about don't have people that do, or if they do; the one that does has a day off when you go there. Retail is tough and not cracking when all you see is morons all day can be tough. If you have any work ethic you put a smile on your face and kiss the morons 455, answer thier questions, and take all thier money. If you dont you should be fired. Pride in retail is tough but some of us have it. Toys R US and Best Buy I would expect bad service from, but EB...Gamestop I would hope they would care about helping idiots.
