    You're wrong. And your lack of experience is telling.
    Such an interview isn't merely pass or fail. And my input isn't enough, in and of itself, to hire or not hire someone.
    Some of the candidates that I don't think will do well end up getting hired.
    So I get a sample of true and false positives and negatives.

    And I still haven't heard anyone with a better metric.

    First you say that the currency exchange rates are not bound by reality or sanity, then you say the big reason the dollar is down is low interest rates.
    That sounds like a contradiction to me.

    You think I should ignore my experience because I didn't do a scientifically sound test?
    The metric is: what proportion of the people we hire become effective employees.
    This works because our goal is finding good people, not giving jobs to everyone who has the right skills.
    It's very quickly apparent that the kind of interview I give weeds out weak candidates. It may also eliminate some candidates that are actually good, but what technique doesn't? You don't need a scientific study to learn the obvious. What's really obvious is that no technique is perfect.

    What metric do you use? Or do you not worry about whether your interview methods are effective?

    We give problems to solve, but we don't leave them alone. We roughly speaking act as mentor. Answering questions and giving hints, discussing mistakes. It tests their communication and teamwork skills as well.
    We find it to be very effective.

    I know at least ten people who would be able to write that correctly in under a minute. A few of them would even put comments. And that's assuming they haven't already heard of the problem.
    Being too quick should NOT disqualify anyone.

    cat and grep (for example) sometimes works better as they run in parallel. plus, there isn't actually anything WRONG with using cat and pipe vs the alternatives.

    Oh get a grip. Stick to picofarads and low voltage and low amperage and there's no danger.
    You can get into trouble with batteries and wire if you try hard enough.
    Many of us were building circuits when we were single digit in age.
    I applaud Ladyada. I think what she's doing already (with adafruit) is fantastic. This just adds to my admiration.

    Really?
    All of those things were done before and better than by Microsoft, other than .Net. Net was done first in Java but done better by Microsoft, by many measures (except supported OSes).
    I can't believe ANYONE thinks MS does SQL best. I don't even think MS thinks that.
    IIS was a joke for years. Don't know what it's like now, but to suggest
    no other option even has 1/2 of the features is ridiculous.
    You haven't actually had any experience in any of the competitor's products, have you?

    We are not the government. We do not have all the powers of the various branches of government, and we are not restricted by all the government's restrictions.
    It's a government of the people, not vice versa.

    One of those is controlled and can easily cause many fatalities in a short period, and the othe is not controlled, and is used in many injury related cases, but is much more rarely fatal.

    Take the UK, it has strong gun control. The per capita firearm related homicide figure is 100 times lower than the US.
