  1. Re:Some good radio. on RIAA Trying to Copy-Protect Radio · · Score: 4, Insightful

Man, I will agree with that.

In St Louis, there is one independant rock station, which has been around for like 40 years, and it is great! But in the last two years, all of the formerly decent (decent imho) Jacor or Clear Channel or whatever stations have changed their format and now all sound the same (for example, we have four adult contemporary stations, and I kid you not, when you hear a song on one of them, you can flip to one of the others and probably hear the same song within fifteen minutes!). I mean, radio has become so homogenized that it is really no longer relevant except for the few notable standouts. I seriously have a hard time figuring out which stations to put on my six presets in my car because I cannot even find six decent stations. That's a sad commentary on the state of radio.

  2. How the RIAA can make money on RIAA Trying to Copy-Protect Radio · · Score: 1

I'll bet a lot of people feel like I do: if something is really worth it, I'll gladly pay for it. What the RIAA is up against is not mp3 or p2p or xyz. Their problem is their product.

Most stuff out there is completely insulting. Seriously. How many talentless "pretty faces" get record deals? Britney Spears. Jesse McCartney. Hillary Duff. Destiny's Child. Need I say more? I remember seeing this interview with Prince (who IS a real artist), and he was trying to encourage some of these "musicians" to learn music (like how to read it, etc.) Are you serious? Some of the most popular acts that the RIAA is peddling don't even know music?!? That's like me holding a well paying job as a carpenter and not even knowing how to use a saw!

When you couple that with the fact that they are just not smart enough to figure out how to utilize new technologies (which is evident by how hard they fight against said technologies) and it is easy to see why they are continually losing business (or so they claim).

    OMG, are you serious?!?!

Someone else already responded in a quite correct and logical way, so I've gotta flame you. It has to be done.

I work at a large company where all kinds of total TUBERS hide nonexistent web development skills behind the fact that IE is the standard. These same people get quite ruffled when introduced to real standards, aka web standards. You sound too much like one of them. I am sorry, but that sounded like the moron at my cell phone company that rhymes with Texnel who told me that Firefox doesn't work right and that's why I have to use IE to pay my bill online. I mean, get a CLUE!

To be fair, Fx does NOT perfectly adhere to standards. But 99% of the time, I can code to standard and only have to fix my code to compensate for IE's inadequacies.

Please please please, if you are a web developer and like IE, that means that you 1) work for Microsoft or 2) don't know the correct way to code web pages. But there's hope! You can learn! Just learn the right way and not the IE way.

  4. from a web developer's perspective on Is The Firefox Honeymoon Over? · · Score: 1

I prefer Fx to IE any day. And not just because of security.

For example, I was designing a web page that required that I refresh an image every 15 seconds. So, rather that reload the whole page, I just used javascript to refresh the img's .src property. Guess what? In Fx, of course it works perfectly. In IE, it worked sporadically. I went to microsoft's solution base, found the issue, and guess what I was told? Stop using so many images! Now, I am not a sysadmin, and am not in the know with all of the security issues. But my example does show MS's attitude toward fixing things. I know that images are not (usually) as important as security, but often we show how we'll react to large things by how we react to small things.

So, I guess this really supports the people who will (and probably already have) posted threads about how Mozilla fixes stuff faster and better that MS. I am sure that will continue to be the case. Mozilla has not yet shown me the "ignore it and it'll go away attitude".

  7. jEdit on Ultimate Software Developer Setup? · · Score: 1

I use jEdit as my IDE. I write loads of SQL (pl and T), xhtml, css, javascript, ColdFusion, ASP. jEdit rocks. I have tried MS Visual Studio, DreamWeaver, TextPad, and Eclipse. I keep coming back to jEdit (jEdit.org).

It is (or can be, depending upon configuration) much leaner than Eclipse and Dreamweaver. It works great for just about any language.

The only thing I dislike is that it is a java application, which means that there are certain visual elements that just scream java, but hey, I guess you can't have it all.

I work for a large company, and have all kinds of software that costs lots of money. But i use jEdit, which, have I mentioned...being OSS, is FREE!

    GODZILLA!!!

    ...er...never mind...

It seems that all of the attemps to engineer this area have backfired. The wetlands that naturally existed would have provided a buffer zone against the storm surge. The flooding of the Mississippi river, while producing undesirable flooding, would have deposited sediment that would provide more land mass which in turn would lessing the flooding.

Of course groups like the Army Corps of Engineers had good intentions -- to protect a very old city. But one cannot help but think that man should leave alone ecosystems that he doesn't really understand. I mean, would you want a mechanic working on your car who did not really understand how an engine works? I wouldn't!

It would seem that past disasters (midwest flooding of 1993, slash & burn farming inthe tropical rainforests) have provided enough empirical data to at show us that it is better devise land management strategies that work in harmony with nature and not against it. You can only hold back a river for so long before it wins. Why not just build out of its path? Of course, this is a moot point when dealing with a city nearly 300 years old (interestingly, the oldest sections at the time of writing are still not inundated...maybe the French actually knew what they were doing?). Anyhow, maybe we will learn from this tragedy.

Oh yeah...to all the not-brights that post stuff like "why do MY tax dollars have to pay for this" or "it's their fault for living there"...when your H2 catches fire and takes your parent's McMansion with it, you'll want some money. And likely you'll get it. And, as with this disaster, we'll all pay for it. So shaddup! It's called society. Be a part of it or move to Antarctica.

Uh oh! My mom says I have to turn out the light now! Bye!
