    One can hope that their automated systems are every bit as successful [slashdot.org] as Denver International Airport's big automation effort. Except instead of conveyor belts moving baggage it'll be nuclear powered, managing missiles and explosives.

    Seriously, how much experience does France and England have with aircraft carriers of this size? None whatsoever from what I can tell. I'm deeply skeptical that they're going to magically find the means to reduce the personnel requirement by over 50%, least of all by making use of utterly untested technology. And on a warship no less! In a time of war I'd greatly prefer somewhat redundant personnel on board, rather than a ship being run by technology which has not been battle-tested.


    You better be an aircraft carrier expert, or else you have a severe case of talking out of your ass.

    In my opinion, it would make sense for Sun to release Solaris under the GPL so that they can gain market share and use more linux code within Solaris. I don't think Adobe Photoshop has to worry as much about market share.

    It seems that SWG and The Matrix Online, which are the two major MMORPGS that were based on movie licenses, haven't done as well as anticipated. Hopefully Star Trek online and Lord of the Rings online will fair better.

    Cray always made the coolest looking supercomputers. Here's an interesting bit of trivia:
    The Cray T3D MC cabinet had an Apple Macintosh PowerBook laptop built into its front. Its only purpose was to display animated Cray Research and T3D logos on its color LCD screen.

    Is a way of making sense of the quote. Meaning he had some problems thinking up the proper sentence but you understood the words that are coming out of his mouth. But thats just my 2c.

    I was actually planning on attending GDC just to fellate his assistant in the hope that he would notice me in passing. But then, I was (quite literally) raised on the early, FUN maxis games.

    Really? I've never deleted a post that wasn't a "fuck all christians" post. In fact, yesterday we had a pastafarian "follower" post a bunch of funny messages. And, I'm pretty much an atheist myself.

    I'll let the moderators know that they shouldn't be deleting posts like that. Hopefully, you don't mind posting at the forum again. I'm really sorry about that!

    His presentation was marked by his obvious struggle with English and a surreal Katamari-esque powerpoint presentation. His English was quite good, and his admonition at the beginning that we might not understand him turned out to be unneccessary.

    Open source is a tool that companies can use to increase their profits. Patents, copyright, and Creative Commons licenses are also tools. The point is, like always, to choose the best tool for the job. It wouldn't make much sense for Adobe to release Photoshop under an open source license, but it might make sense for Sun to release Solaris under an open source license.

    The man's a genius. Lets see you come up with some of the things that he has. He's done more for the videogame industry than pretty much anyone out there and he continues to innovate. Now personally I don't care for the Sims, but SimCity was always awesome and I just can't wait for Spore.

    Oh, I can't wait for Spore either, and I agree that Will Wright is one of the greatest game developers of all time. There are only a few that I would put ahead of him, even. Lord British, John Carmack, Sid Meier, and David Crane come to mind. My point is that most people here haven't even heard of Will Wright, but now we have 15 slashdot articles on him that all say the same damn thing.

    Haha, no kidding. I've never heard of it before today, and I took a few electronics classes. As far as I can tell It's basically a simple logic gate. Maybe we'll see nanotube flash memory in the near future.

    What the hell is a ring oscillator, you ask? Well, wikipedia says:
    A ring oscillator is a device composed of an odd number of NOT gates whose output oscillates between two voltage levels, representing true and false. The NOT gates, or inverters, are attached in a chain; the output of the last inverter is fed back into the first. The simplest ring oscillator, then, is a single inverter whose output is fed back to itself. Because a single inverter computes the logical NOT of its input, it can be shown that the last output of a chain of an odd number of inverters is the logical NOT of the first input. This final output is asserted a finite amount of time after the first input is asserted; the feedback of this last output to the input causes oscillation.

    A circular chain composed of an even number of inverters cannot be used as a ring oscillator; the last output in this case is the same as the input. However, this configuration of inverter feedback can be used as a storage element; it is the basic building block of static random access memory, or SRAM.

    A real ring oscillator only requires power to operate; above a certain threshold voltage, oscillations begin spontaneously. To increase the frequency of oscillation, two methods may be used. Firstly, the applied voltage may be increased; this increases both the frequency of the oscillation and the power consumed, which is dissipated as heat. The heat dissipated limits the speed of a given oscillator. Secondly, a smaller ring oscillator may be fabricated; this results in a higher frequency of oscillation given a certain power consumption.

    To understand the operation of a ring oscillator, one must first understand gate delay. In a physical device, no gate can switch instantaneously; in a device fabricated with MOSFETs, for example, the gate capacitance must be charged before current can flow between the source and the drain. Thus, the output of every inverter of a ring oscillator changes a finite amount of time after the input has changed. From here, it can be easily seen that adding more inverters to the chain increases the total gate delay, reducing the frequency of oscillation.
