Finally someone takes foreign threats seriously. We are walking up the ladder of job complexity due to technology, leaving behind more and more people incapable of educating themselves up for the jobs of the future. There will indeed be a massive and growing class of the unemployed and the unemployable as programmed machines take over the lower level jobs, many of which are the entry level jobs that start one off in work life. And these people will be left out of the benefits of advancing technology due to the lack of the money necessary to avail themselves of it. A huge percentage of the human population is only suited to lower level manual labor.

These huge machines have high voltage and current, computers, networks, pneumatics and dangerous mechanical actions that must be neutralized. There is a complex procedure for doing this correctly. There is also a complex procedure for bringing the machine back up again and testing its functionality. I wonder if the brain isn't doing essentially the same thing - carefully shutting down the various parts of the brain and brain functions, then doing maintenance and finally powering back up in proper sequence..
So they knew about the problem, and instead of fixing it, they created a "procedure,' one that had to be memorized and remembered or you and your crew and every person on the plane would surely die. Sound right to you?
They make it sound like there will be a strict control of gene editing of embryos, but what they will actually do is control who gets to do it and set up guidelines for actually doing it. Essentially they are just setting up the bureaucracy to do the thing, not forbid it. And scientists will just move out of their purview anyway. And if there is money in it - and of course there is - the whole system will become corrupted. In short, gene editing is here to stay and will grow greatly. So come the mutants.
I bet this is a general problem though and occurs across all automated systems and AI systems - the degradation of human knowledge, skills, and abilities. And from those things come the next advances. Automated systems and AI will kill advances by freezing systems into the current state of knowledge. Advanced Technology-caused Stasis.
