Why did someone think that was a good idea? Isn't the Pilots job to you know... PILOT the plane?

This is not always accurate. I work for an email security company, and our recommendation for incoming messages, if the email address isn't valid, mail sink the messages, and don't give any notification. Optionally, have a second rule that's applied to business partners to bounce messages to let them know they got the wrong address, and bounce at that point.
Short answer: No.
Long Answer: The only way tech would stop mass shootings of any form is if we put in some sort of control circuit into guns having them detect "No Firing Zones", at that point those circuits would just be removed. Or the shooters would stick to "old" guns.
The correct answer is people need to be educated, taught common sense, and a decent sense of morality. That would require a change to the education system, instead of trying to focus on test scores by the droves, schools (and parents, and the community at large) need to be paying attention to not just Kids, but also the other adults in their community for troubled people, like this individual clearly was, pretty sure they all have been in one way or another.

Though in all honesty... most people are pretty dumb anyways... all we are looking at is more computers being built between now and then.
As long as the new AI overlords allow us to continue living, I'm ok with them taking over.
