I just wrote my own AJAX Online Photo Storage.. It stores everything in a mysql database, from the tags to the binary data. Images are stored in 3 versions: thumbnail, webnail (definable size such as 800x600), and the original. With a host like dreamhost that provides me 200 GB I've moved my entire collection online in this system. You can import entire folders of photos with a set of tags/album, or upload multiple files at once.
I was in your boots about 4 months ago and wrote my own system to accomplish exactly what you're looking for, check it out here:

Any family member can create an account and:
-Blog news entries
-Upload photo albums
-Upload videos/media/downloads
-Add to "Links" section
It's all very simple and web-based.
If you want the source (PHP/MySQL) shoot me an email: matt@farleyfamily.net

PS - on a side note I'm finishing up a system where uploaded videos are transcoded to flash and played in the page directly (a la YouTube / Google Video)
I wanted to inform family and friends of such information, so I wrote an article explaining to them how they can get all the benefits of commercial software, at virtually no cost:

I actually got sick of family and friends asking me to tune up their XP installs, so I wrote a detailed article on the entire process and posted it on our family website here: http://www.farleyfamily.net/articles/tuneup/
It's a comprehensive step-by-step of what any aunt or uncle should be able to follow in order to free system resources and make for a better (faster!) desktop experience.
We've been using Kerio Mailserver for the past three years and can attest to its ability to replace Exchange for the small business.
However you will deal with various bugs and glitches with each subsequent update. Many users are driven nuts to the point of abandoning the software altogether. We're a bit more laid back and just ride the waves.
See the Kerio support forums for examples of users whining about bugs:

If only our aunts, uncles, grandparents, brothers, sisters, knew how much money they could save by equipping their new commodity PC's with open source: http://www.farleyfamily.net/articles/freesoftware/
Yes it's too short, so give me some additions!
I compared The GIMP to Adobe Photoshop "Elements." Elements is a scaled down version.
I don't know of any firewalls similar to Zone Alarm that would work on a linux desktop -- nor have I heard of the need for such a product.
Thanks for the input.

I've setup a demo with some of my pics for you guys to check out:

Feel free to edit/add/delete photos.. Notice that in the gallery view you can click-in and edit tags/descs/albums on-the-fly (very slick).

I think the greatest problem is marketing and exposure. Look at the comparison: http://www.farleyfamily.net/articles/freesoftware
Why would anyone spend $1000's when it can all be had for free? No one knows about it..
