Doesn't seem like those signs are terribly visible from afar, but at least the ones who take them down will be able to tell what it says. They might not get the point, though, not that the average passer-by would either.
Ahh yes, the power of figlet/vim/a2ps/poster.c (bold will be added in the next version)
I hear guys on the toilet using a cell phone, in the supermarket, and of course my favorite, driving a car with a phone in one hand and coffee in the other hand...
And your problem with that would be what?
I suppose you have a problem with people who talk on their cell phones while driving and drinking Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters too!
From the article: The experience for the end-user is fast and powerful game playing that boots in under one minute, without the usual overhead from the legacy operating systems traditionally used in the gaming industry, SCI claims.
This leads me to assume they mean the stand-up arcade consoles which might run thousands of dollars, instead of a few hundred bucks for a home gaming gadget.
Actually, I believe that's how the CPS3 'standard' works (CD/DVD based, I believe). CPS2 has two boards, A and B. B is the game, A is kind of the 'CPU'.
I unfortunately have not graduated to CPS3 yet, so I can't tell you for sure. But I don't think this is useful in the arcade arena, unless they're seriously looking for commodity hardware.
Sun Microsystems is notorious for charging way too much for their products...so much so that some times their resellers and channel partners sell the same products for 200% less. They need to get their act together.
Working for a manufacturer, I can tell you that resellers aren't very happy when the manufacturer undercuts them. The manufacturer generally doesn't have a retail sales force, and I can't say that I've ever seen a manufacturer sell an item for less than what's in their retail channels.
It's kind of dumb to alienate your existing bulk customer base just to try and get some one-time sales.
until I showed someone how to fake the origin of an email, at which point the entire office began firing one another through eamails from the boss.
Yeah, don't show the regular users how to do that;).. A little less dangerous is what my wife used to do at work. When someone left their terminal on, they'd change that persons "Real Name" to something niftier. So they would send out all their emails like: FROM: Jenny 'The curtains match the rug' Smith or something along those lines.
Your users are still going to be using Microsoft Office, Groupwise, and the custom-written applications to access the Oracle DB, right? Isn't most of your cost supporting these applications? Isn't supporting these applications on Linux going to be just as difficult?
Yep, it'll be just as difficult as going thin-client, but there are no licenses to buy, or hardware to upgrade.
Running Citrix or TS isn't the same as running plain-jane MSWindows - there are a ton of issues trying to make a single-user OS into a multi-user. Just like trying to use a peer-to-peer desktop OS as a server.
My parent's 1988 Ford Aerostar had all that. My dad's 95 VW Jetta had that, as does my brother's 2000 Jetta. I'm sort of amused that most people haven't had this kind of thing for years.
I think you missed a key point - he's not talking about mileage, he's talking about a REALTIME miles-per-gallon display. That is the instantaneous mpg your vehicle is traveling at a moment in time. I have a 2000 Jetta with every option, and unless he added it afterwards, your brother does NOT have this option.:)
I don't think you've been driving enough.. My mom had an '88 Lebaron with all digital (including realtime MPG). I currently have a '99 Town and Country with it.. It's not new technology, it just depends on the package you got your car with.
Now, being from Milwaukee, I can't NOT post without saying I get 50mpg on my motorcycle using high grade fuel (45 on 'regular').:)
I heard about something on a TV show a few years ago. It talked about some guy who was training deaf people to "echolocate" using clicks. Supposedly, they were able to walk, tell the diff between walls and shrubs, and even skateboard. Does anyone know about this?
I remember it. I think it was on discovery channel. I don't remember skateboards, but they could actually ride bikes while useing a clicker they held in their mouths (IIRC).
Yeah, you know I think you really can fly when you jump off that cliff if you REALLY believe you can! Why don't you try it?
Ok, but I think Kitty Hawk SC is a good place to do it..
Anyways, the rest of your comment is quite logical, but unfortunately doesn't agree with what I've been exposed to. (Mainstream Scientists allowing for possibilities outsite their known spectrum)
The messages generally contain no usefull information, and are deleted without reading.
I run an email service. I also bounce messages that are infected. Yes, it's a great way to get the word about about the service. No, I don't bounce faked FROM Addresses, IMHO, that's a good way to get bad PR.
Anyways, I monitor 'bandwidth' usage. I had a customer who just signed up for a free account to stop viruses, and they almost immediately exceeded their bandwidth (15MB a month by default, and they were at 60MB in a week) After 40 'you are over quota' messages, I finally disabled his account. As far as I could tell, he was spamming with a perfect list, or just abusing the quotas.
It turns out he is a business who was SWAMPED with those bounces from other providers, and completely
missed all my automated notifications, and my very important "You will be disabled if you don't respond" notification.
So he was disabled for two days before he realized what happened. Lost customers? I'm sure he had some legitimate email bounce. All because of mis-configured servers. Maybe he should keep a record of who is flooding him, and sue them.
Were the architects of the common Internet mail utilities just plain stupid?
I run Qmail-Scanner. Not only does it's "You sent a virus here" message only include the first 50 lines or so of the original message, but I can turn off those notifications for any criteria I wish.
I now respond to 'You sent me a virus' emails with a not-so-kind reply to the postmaster encouraging them to turn off notifications for KNOWN spoofed FROM addresses.
It's been weeks guys, take a free product, and front-end your commercial POS.
All those expensive high hourly rate contractors. They were the first to go because they're expensive, and because there's no hassle about letting them go, since they were temporary from the get-go. Have we hired any in the last 2-3 years? Not that I know of.
What kind of job are you looking for? I'm an expensive high-rate (or maybe not) CONSULTANT. There are still plenty of places that don't even have an IT staff, that still need stuff done. Hell, I know people I think are incompetant (but 'it works') who are getting paid decent money - because most 'average joes' just don't know any better.
I also run 'Virus Free Email', and I can't believe the number of people who have signed up for virus protection.. I was caught totally unprepared for the number of end-users who wanted to pay for 'extra bandwith' or 'extra diskspace'. I started out targetting businesses.
There's a market for everything, STILL. You just have to look for it.
You get to listen to music for free over the airways because the radio stations pay for the rights to broadcast them, unlike Kazaa. I can buy a cable TV descrambler and watch all sorts of "Free" TV, but I'll eventually get caught and I'm sure the cable company will want some kind of compensation. Same deal here.
Cable descrambles? Pay for broadcast rights?
We're talking about people who's VCR's blink 12:00.. They know nothing of that. As far as they can tell, they're doing the same thing with the PC that they've done with TV/Radio.
Yes it's 'illegal', but like another poster said (paraphrased): People make the laws. If the people don't agree with a law, the law will be changed or simply ignored.
No, I just think shows how DUMB this girl and her family is. That $29.95 is a ONE-time fee for an ad-free version of Kazaa, not a monthly fee. Did they actually believe that paying $29.95 for a copy of a program meant that they can download all the copyrighted music they want?
Why not? You buy a stereo once, and get all the free music you want.
You think the average person is aware of business models behind the products and services they receieve on a daily basis?
The mother's quote at the end of the article is priceless. Of COURSE what they were doing is illegal. It's called copyright infringement. Is it theft? Hell no. But it's still illegal. I suspect the RIAA will quietly drop this case and move on to someone else who won't make them look so bad.
Everyone on this site knows it's copyright infringement. But the lines are blurred to the 'average joe'. IF you can listen and watch for free just by buying a radio/tv, why would the internet be any different? You get a FREE web browser with a computer, an have access to a lot of free information (like newspapers that you can just pick up and read at a bookstore/library), why would downloading music be viewed any differently?
Beautiful pictures, if you were lucky enough to have a 256 color CGI monitor! Back when in my youth, we had green screen monitors and black and white TVs. We thought that was 1337!
Aww dude.. you're embarrassing yourself.
CGA = 4color
EGA = 16color
VGA = 256color
Even if you had a 286, 640kb, and CGA - HP Deskjet's printed those pics just fine;)
Space travel as discussed in science fiction has become something that we no longer hope for in our lifetimes. This was not the case 50 years ago, we thought we would be traveling the stars! Now we know better.
IMHO, Scientists today are missing that little bit of fantasty that makes the impossible come true.
Stop telling people it can't be done, all you're doing is discouraging the young from even trying to do what you think (or have been told?) is not possible.

Cordially yours, Zaphod.

Holy Cow!
Did you see this in the article?!
"Enterprise Studio for Mobile integrates all Symbian Software Development Kits (SDKs)"
I don't think you'll be doing much naked dancing with a Sybian SDK!
I don't think you've been driving enough.. My mom had an '88 Lebaron with all digital (including realtime MPG). I currently have a '99 Town and Country with it.. It's not new technology, it just depends on the package you got your car with.

I sincerely hope you're right, and I'm wrong.
Check the PHP lists.. I've been quite surprised at the number of 'Horde/PHP on Windows' questions that come up.

Was Hercules 256? I never had one..
I first thought SGI.. that would probably be 256 ;)
