    Like as not, many people already consider things plenty simple with Windows

    Coming from a Netware background, Windows just gives me a big-ass headache. DFS to root map home directories without manually sharing each one? What the hell is that about?

    And the applications.. The Registry? Sure makes moving programs much harder..

    IMHO, the whole Windows model was just created wrong. It may be easier sitting at home, and installing the app you want. But running a network is just made more difficult (unless you invest in other tools).

    Nope, I'm at work. That's a personal project. I can sit here and tell you that you are an idiot, but not work on my personal projects that don't benefit work in some way.

    Keep saying virii guys, once it becomes the 'standard' way of saying viruses, no document (or group of Perl programmers crying) on Earth will change the fact that virii is plural for virus.

    The only reason for a switch is PRICE. Honestly, no matter what bullshit people spread on here about how good OO, SO, etc, are, they aren't what MSO offers. Not even close.

    Yeah, and The Gimp isn't Photoshop. The real question is, how many people actually require what 'What MSO offers'?

    So far the biggest complaints around here(From OO1.01) are that fonts seem to be different, and negative numbers on spreadsheets aren't red.

    If we didn't already own copies of MSOffice for those users, we surely would NOT have purchased it for those reasons.

    Think about it.. if there was never a virus, and never an 'Internet Worm' in the 80's, we may not be patching our systems.

    And when someone DOES decide to release a 'Melissa', we're all screwed, because we're all vulnerable.

    Then why was the safety monitoring system exposed to the office network? In this case, the worm came in on a non-firewalled T-1 line from a contractor's network, and through there to the internet.

    I would have suspected that there would be multiple layers of protection in front of critical systems like that. Even more, I would expect that safety regulations require these layers of protection. Of course, that would hurt the bottom line, so we can't have that happening :(

    It's not cost, it's knowledge. I use iproute (DOS NAT Firewall- 2 NIC's, a 386 and a floppy is all you need) between local and remote networks. Most of the time, they're there for a single purpose (file transfer, in my case). ALWAYS try and make sure YOU are initiating any connection.

    Use a Windows 2000 machine, make sure it has only the access level needed from the outside (maybe sshd or something similar running, maybe), and keep the thing patched.
    If there was a Linux/Unix worm running around, couldn't the exact same situation happen?

    While I agree with you in principle, the problem I have with MS patches is that I have NO FSCKING CLUE what other areas of the OS are affected. At least if I see a patch for TFTP for Linux, I KNOW I don't need it.

    My God Man, just running MS Terminal Services requires the MS Client, even though I run a Netware network!

    It saddens me as a developer that you can't even deign to write a P2P add without the assumption that it will be used for sharing copyrighted materials and thus shut down by the RIAA/MPAA.

    Did you guys really think that Microsoft's not profiling the Slashdot users, or the Linux kernel contributors or anyone they deem as a valuable target?

    I don't spend enough time in one place to have 'Excellent Karma' under a single identity, if I were to use quite a few of them.

    That's exactly why I try not to hide myself. I WANT people to see what I've posted. Find me as 'havokmon' 'rick@usb.com' or 'rick at valeoinc.com' (personal, business, business - replace the yaddayadda). I'll have to update my resume though with my previous business emails so it's easy for me (and my contributions) to be found.

    If you set your score for MICROSOFT_EXECUTABLE high enough, and these emails with their .pif attachments get sent right to /dev/null

    I just got one with an .SCR attachment. Setup qmailscanner to call SpamAssassin, and you won't eat up all those resources for stupid attachments.

    Well, YEAH, it's New York. Hell, they get 1" of snow, and all of a sudden the whole world is shut down.

    Sorry, I live in Wisconsin, we don't shut down for 1" of snow, and I'm tired of their 'center of the world' mentality over there.

    Unlike the North Pole where the ice floats on the sea Antartica is a big land mass with lots of ice on top. If the Antartic ice melts, sea levels will rise.

    Which sea? And would they all rise at the same rate?

    What happens to the locks in Panama? The 'sea levels' are already not equal.

    Are we assuming that new lakes aren't formed by melted ice?

    Ahh A Troll, I should have known. Well, if half of the crashes are 3rd party code, where do the other half come from? "Acts of God"? Maybe it should be: "Acts of g0d"

    Winzip chokes on a corrupted .zip file and crashes; Windows keeps running just fine, but that's still a crash. Under XP that will generate an app crash message to be sent to Microsoft to be analyzed and included in statistics like these.

    I don't think ANYONE actually considers "Winzip crashing" a "Windows crash".

    Do you consider a stone chipping your windshield a car crash?

    The real problem here, is that MS is saying that the stone chipping the windsheild causes cars to crash 50% of the time - not the failure of the car/driver.

    I suspect that they are referring to drivers and other kernel-space code. The standard Microsoft weenie excuse for instability in the past has been "it's the drivers!", blaming the video drivers is a favourite.

    Hey now.. I'm no MS weenie, but I'll blame a crash on ATI drivers over anything else anyday! :P
