My favorite thing was to construct vast cities, and then launch billiards balls at them, pretending it was meteors coming down. Hurm. I think that may disqualify me from ever being put in charge of heavy weapons ordnance.
Man, If you can't hit a lego building with a pool ball, keep it to yourself.
If the rest of the world finds out we can't hit jack shit, the "Right to Bear Arms" won't be worth a damn.
"The implication, if it is true, would just be so enormous that it's something people should look at and take seriously," Dr. Kolb said. "This would upset the apple cart."
Now I know what non-computer people think when they hear us ranting about how MS's oppressive tactics are keeping the world from experiencing the best software available:
"Whatever buddy, in YOUR world maybe.."
You seem to think that the only worm out there now is Code RedI/II/III.
I get daily reports of port scans on 111 (from portsentry), which, if I remember correctly is sadmind, the Linux Worm.
These things ARE NOT going away folks.
And it's worse for MS. What if XP DOESN'T get released? People will be installing the same old unpatched IIS on new machines, and maybe not installing the latest fixes.
At least if you grab the latest ISO, the older holes are closed. Without an all-inclusive MS upgrade, people will just keep getting infected by Code Red.
What's the difference between MySQL AB, and Nuwhatever MySQL?
Aren't we basically looking at a MySQL vs. Postgres situation between the two?
I thought Open Source was supposed to create competition, with the 'best work' winning out?
Isn't this competitive?
I suppose from now on, every Debian article should mention Linus created Linux, and each tool that's mentioned in any article should give credit to the creator. I don't remember any mention of who wrote 'fortune', or Apache, or Perl, when that kid was arrested for code unbecoming of a student.
You just need to chill on your personal gripes.
We could definitely learn some lessons on how not to advocate our position in the future.
Sometimes I get the feeling that "Open Source Advocates" are really regurgitated TeamOS/2'ers.
Now I like OS/2. I like Linux. I like FreeBSD. But I've run into MANY people who have the TeamOS/2 mentality, "It's the BEST, and you should just know it."
Ever play a game with a guy who always won, and always rubbed it in your face?
Sometime you gotta let the 'badguy' win a few, just to look good to your fans, and maybe win a few more over in the process.
I'm not saying this patent thing is a good thing, but you gotta give a little bit sometimes..

Reminds me of a Dana Carvey skit where he visited the White House, when GW 1st was prez.
GW: "Hey, can you talk like me, and call the Security Guard in here."
DC: "No, I don't really want to.."
GW: "Come on..."
DC: "OK OK.."
DC: Picking up phone, in GW voice "ahhh could you bring some popcorn in here.."
Security Guard walks in.
GW: wheezing laugh, "he he, forget it forget it. It's ok. he he"
Guard leaves
GW: "Do it again..."
"I guess someone will claim they are exercising thier "monopoly" by making that requirement. "
Of course they are.
"Two wrongs don't make a right, hence the AOL deal is just as bad as what people accused MS of."
No. MS SOLD their OS to an OEM. But now they're saying that if AOL will pay that SAME OEM to install AOL Software, then the OEM must make MSN software easily available, at no cost to MS.
If I buy your car, and plan to install Pirelli tires, what gives you the right to say I must have big Firestone logo's on the hubcaps?
I would be fine if MS paid the OEM's to 'have this and this requirement', but they're not. MSN is a completely seperate service, and deserves to be treated that why. Dial-UP is NOT a requirement of the OS, and not a necessity for ANYONE.
Personally, I LIKED the extra GUI that vendors such as Packard Bell added to their systems. It made the end-user experience so much better. Yeah, they were resource hogs, but that's not a big deal anymore. MS's claim of people just 'sitting down at any PC and knowing how to use it', goes over with me about as well as Bill's attempt to get schools to teach Hex.
That sounds great, and with the right skills, a person CAN manage from a remote location. But as you said it can not be done effectively.
What it really comes down to is:
1. Pay NON-American's instead of Americans in America. = H1-B
2. Pay NON-American's instead of American's, Worldwide. = Competant Long Distance Managers
The best people will get hired no matter what, so:
Would you rather have that employee's salary spent within U.S. borders?
I installed ConsoleOne the other day, and the damn thing doesn't work in RH7.1. Novell has a TID with the specific error, but their solution is to REINSTALL GLIBC. Glibc? For a Java Error? What the hell is that?
In any case, I dumped IBM's JRE, and installed 1.3 from blackdown.org, and now ConsoleOne works like a charm.
Oh no! Not another 6x86 PR200!

You mean all the guys who look like "The Comic Book Guy" on The Simpsons, are going to have their pictures up there?
There's no nudity allowed, so it'd have to be 1:01.
* Havokmon slaps smack_attack with a tuna.
What kind of a hack is that?
That's it. The name was in my SANS email this morning. :)
(twas a ZDNet story I can't seem to locate)

Generic Soda, Generic Drugs, Generic Perfume.
Perfume for sure, but I'm quite sure they've all lost that case already.
Idiot.
Yeah, I'll buy a permit from the city to put up a fence on MY property. Get a fucking life.
Of course they are.
