  1. Dot Org on Don't Be Evil — Hire It Done · · Score: 1

Hmm... First I hear about Google's new philanthropic venutre, Google.org and now I hear about them hiring DCI. I can't help but think they're connected, especially since Google.org is going to be a "for-profit" venture which gives them less restrictions in the lobbying arena.

  2. Boardwalk and Park Place on OS X on x86? · · Score: 1

Apple has maintained their monopoly on the hardware that the OSX runs on, but just barely. The only way Apple may be able to survive is if they can move away from the hardware aspect of their business entirely. But the move to selling OS alone is likely to be too risky for the company to consider. Will it threaten Linux? I don't think so. People will buy it. People will use it. But the reliability of the OS is not on the same level as the linux platform. Those people who use linux effectively as of right now probably won't waste their time. The only people the OSX could cause any problem with would be BeOS and Microsoft. Both of these have enough to worry about as it is.

  3. Oh lord... on In-Flight Web Access Coming Soon? · · Score: 1

It makes me wonder how this is going to be managed. Could you imagine the illegal hackers in-flight, breaking into systems? Who's responsible? The airline? If that's the case, are they going to track usage by the seat number? Ever moved into another seat on an airline? Not hard is it? Potential for disaster...

  4. The scary thing on IBM Constructs New Fastest Computer · · Score: 1

What scares me isn't that technology is advancing at this dizzying pace, but rather that we are still utilizing that technology to study the use and effects of a weapon that has been in use for over 50 years.

  5. It's kinda like becoming Prom Queen on Publishing-Online or "Dead Tree" Format? · · Score: 1
As a writer myself, I had considered the option of publishing online, based on the same impetus. The thing I quickly realized is that the publishing game, should you desire to be in any way successful, is not unlike high school: The popular people were the ones that got everything they wanted.

There are thousands of books that have been published on the net over the years that we have never (and likely will never) hear about. The ones we know of are from already famous authors. The publishing company is right now as neccessary to the book industry as the record company is to the music industry. To really be able to do what you want, you have to find a company that will let you publish at least once and then go from there. Publishing to the net will make your novel unseen and unpublishable, as no company will want a second hand book until you reach a certain level of popularity.

I enjoyed the Rogue Squadron Books by Michael A Stackpole, but I'm a pretty big fan of his...

  7. Uh-oh on Amiga Executive Update · · Score: 1

Does this mean that the warranty on the Amiga computer I bought in 1987 is void? What ever will we do now that Amiga is out of the hardware race???

  8. Mwa ha ha ha ha!! on Lego robots in volleyball tournament · · Score: 1

Now my plan for world domination can be put into effect! It all hinges on the Y2k Lego Robot volleyball tournament and a HERF gun made entirely of Legos!!! First Lego volleyball, tomorrow LEGO SOCCER (maniacal laughter)!!!!!

  9. IBM board meeting on IBM Thinkpad 600E to be certified "compatible" · · Score: 1

It's obvious that when they took the time to discuss this arrangement, they must have known into consideration that the system is going to be completely useless with RedHat. I mean, what the hell are they thinking. Nobody will want to buy a system that isn't going to be Internet ready for a year or two. Freaky conspiracy theory: IBM is getting paid big bucks by MS to discredit Linux (esp. Read Hat, being most public system at present) by creating an inferior application for the OS.
