I don't think he meant that the IP laws aren't real or true laws, but he meant that they're not a right. If another country improves the human rights in their country, then the populace is better off, but if they improve IP rights, then mostly American corporations benefit. So this RIAA demand could be summed up as "We demand Russia gives tax breaks to IP companies." because that's what it essentially is.

I don't think the chances for that are any larger than for natural bacteria. And if one of these mutated, then why would it necessarily be any deadlier than most of the deadly bacteria/viruses out there? I guess it would be pretty weird if it mutated into a pathogen that turns people into drugs or clean energy.

This research makes it a easier to make even more effective bioweapons though, and some governments will always be willing to build them. Even scarier is the thought of what will happen when it becomes feasible for private persons to afford to create their own species. But by the time that is possible, nanotech has hopefully developed to the level where everyone has a silicon based programmable immune system.

A network is only as good as its peers. If the Overnet network was superior, then it was because of a lot of good peers sharing their bandwidth. If it becomes difficult to use overnet because of an aging client with no support, then the peers will go to some other network making it better. Losing one client or even an entire network is hardly a loss at all to the P2P community, as all the peers will just disperse to other networks.

If he had no evidence, I would. If he had evidence, then I would believe him. As a writer working for CNN I'd be more inclined to believe him, but without evidence he'd still just be a liar. I see your point though, most people sadly believe everything they see or read on the news, without ever bothering to check up on the facts. But anyone who takes anything from a unsubstantiated source as fact should stick to fiction.

  17. The market on New Consortium to Push UDI and Include DRM · · Score: 1

it has virtually nothing to do with stopping "piracy" and everything to do with eliminating competitors

But isn't piracy essentially a competitor? Hopefully the movie and music industries get this sooner rather than later, and start competing with prices and with quality. Personally I think the next-gen HD formats need zero DRM, because the quality difference between a ~2 gigabyte rip vs. a 30 gb HD movie is enormous, nevermind the insane download times. Of course bandwidth will eventually catch up, but this would only put more pressure on making buying movies even more lucrative, with more extra stuff or cheaper prices.
