You're comparing apples and oranges. Here's some selective highlighting:

The Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) released a fatwa, or Islamic religious ruling, against terrorism and extremism last week

The whole terrorist thing, IMHO, has far more to do with the fact that the poor & undeducated in the Mideast are unable to achieve our standard of living - and are rather resentful of the fact that we achive our lifestyle in part by drilling their land and supporting corrupt regimes, and resort to asymetric warfare because of said economic and military gap. Religion is merely a justification of violence (on both sides really), not the cause. Its the same in every war.

So it shouldn't really be a suprise that:
    • American muslims do not have identical goals and values as Arabic muslims simply because they are muslim.
    • Those that are educated both the teachings of the Koran and international politcs know that not only is terrorism against Islamic law, but know that it is unlikely do further the goal of economic equality and a unified Islamic state.
    • Americans don't want Arabs to bomb them, even if they do happen to share the same religion

But please, don't believe that someone here in Germany is really looking for a good (or great) programmer anymore.

Germany has never really been the center of the computing industry. I can't think of too many major players headquarted outside the Bay Area/Seattle/Boston. Not to troll, but it seems like Europeans are trying hard to remove themselves from the global market. They are far more expensive to hire than Americans, and no more skilled or educated.

Anyways, when there are defacto standards apps in just about every niche, it should be of little suprise that the majority of IT jobs out there involve deploying and customizing said systems rather than re-inventing the wheel (ie it's easier to find a job using a hammer than a job designing one).

But I notice significant differences in satelite image quality, and I can't say one is better than the other. I live in Rhode Island... MS offers much higher resolution photos of the RI coast, but Google's imagery of Boston is far superior (and in color). It seems like both services pull use a variety image providers (freqently the same ones). Anyone out there have any thoughts on the partnerships between MS/Google & said companies, or why one engine seems to do a better job choosing the best photo?

I'm not sure why that was modded funny. I love OSX and their laptop lines, but I don't think they've made a desktop that suits my needs yet.
    • The current mac mini is only a G4 with 32 meg video card. Doesn't cut it for gaming. Why use a G4 over a G5 in a desktop system? The only reason the G4 is still alive is that the G5 has too many heat/power issues for a laptop.
    • The iMac is great, but refuse to buy a computer with a built-in monitor (Particularly when I already own one that's nicer & larger then anythin built into the iMac line). Its ugly as sin too IMHO.
    • The PowerMac is just plain overkill for what I would be doing... I can't justify dropping 2gs for dual G5's just to play games and music.
I'm currently running everything on one fedora machine (MythTV recording, web/fileserver, gaming through cedega, etc)... it gets painful at times. So I'm holding out for either an affordable Mac thats good enough for gaming, or a cheapo Mac Mini & xBox360 or the new PS.

It was just a year and a half ago that the sodomy laws were repealed ;)

Which is precisely why the courts have the power to interperet & repeal laws.

It was just a couple weeks ago that I recieved a handwritten note from my Congressman (not one of those generic 'thank you' letters from his office), just because I took the 10 minutes to write a long e-mail about an issue.

Agreed. I know another ant-MS comment is kind of passe, but I feel like the lack of innovation isn't on the hardware side. The average users I meet today are exctatic with the transition to LCD monitors, high quality speakers, wireless mice & NICs, and light laptops with phenomanal battery life. But they're less then impressed with the improvements MS has made in the same time - and frequently complain that the user experience is worse with the sheer number of viruses/malware out there (sure, I know the leaps and bounds that win 95 to 2k was, but it doesn't feel different to the average joe).

I like my fedora desktop well enough, but I'm praying for an x86 release of OSX.

Mod parent up. I'm tired of hearing these doomsday oil scenerios. We're not going to suddenly run out of oil. As oil prices climb:
    • Consumers will trade in their hummers for hybrids
    • Oil companies will drill areas that were not cost effective before
    • Government will improve public transportation
All of which will reduce our rate of consumption. We have the technology for electric/fuel cell cars and will adopt when the price is right, and no shortage of electricity to power them (I'm aware most of our electricity comes from nuclear & coal, but there is hardly a coal shortage at the moment and geothermal/wind/solar/hydroelectric are proven and in use).
  13. Re:What if sustainability isn't efficient? on China Planning For Sustainable Cities · · Score: 1

they seemed to miss the point that some recycling has to be done since the materials we use are non-renewable, such as plastic

Plastic IS renewable - hell, you can make it from vegetable oil. Its nothing but hydrocarbons, its just that oil byproduct is the cheapest way to get the raw materials. Nanocarbons are the way of the future anyways.

Sure, it's cheaper to throw it away _now_, but it will be more expensive to dig up old plastic later on than to recycle what we have now.

I imagine its more expensive to dig up, sort, and melt down than it is to make it with an alternative source. And an increased cost in plastic wouldn't be the end of the world - it would be very easy to reduce our use of it (so much is wasted in packaging, ect).

Kind of an aside, but the whole solid waste problem is largely due to landfil conditions, not the actual materials that we're throwing away. Hell, they've dug up banannas from the 70s. Organic waste needs oxygen and water to decompose, plastics need sunlight to degrade. Neither condition is possible in current landfils.

As far as sustainability - I'm FAR more concerned with poulation control. The technology exists continue with the US/European current standard of living on 100% renewable sources (its just not cost effective yet) - but not 6+ billion people.

Quite a misleading post. The headline of the article actually reads: "A senior Chinese general has warned that his country could destroy hundreds of American cities with nuclear weapons if the two nations clashed over Taiwan". Generals always have that hawkish attitude, but really they're just playing the same game as the Russians did in the cold war - conflict is avoided because both sides know it would be mutual destruction. we should keep in mind the lengths to which the Chinese would be willing to wage war against us Americans Just garbage. There is zero motivation - they are far too dependent on the US economy to want to destroy it, and the younger generation is pushing hard for US-style education & human rights.
